How to mix a toner for hair colour

  • Last time I spoke about toners, it was mostly around the theory of toning hair, so in this video I wanted to deal with the practical and show you exactly how to mix a toner. Previous video concerning toning is here and I advise watching for the more theory side of toning. I think it's always useful to know WHY we do what we are doing:
    • Toning hair: Remove or...
    This is mainly used when you want to tone bleached hair, but it is also the same for making a toner to remove unwanted tones from previously coloured hair.
    In this video I use the ratio 1:1:1 (ex. 10ml colour, 10ml water, 10ml developer), but 2:1:1 (20ml colour, 10ml water, 10ml developer) is also a common ratio used in salons, but will require you to be a little more careful with watching it develop. The maths of this would explain, but is a little out of the scope of this video and would overcomplicate matters...
    I hope you find it helpful, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me, I'm always happy to help!

    I absolutely love how you slowed your speech down so we, the non-hairdressers, can actually follow you. Thank you for this video. It will safe me a lot of money going to the hairdressers for a toner. Looking forward to your other videos. Ps. Ignore the bitchy comments on here. Not even worth yiur time to respond to them

      haha thanks! I'm glad it helped, it can be really satisfying to be able to do your own hair at home rather than suffer a salon just for a quick toner! Best of luck and if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help.

    Thanks for simple and straight to the point explanation on ratio and what to do!
    I have shoulder length hair but a balayage only that I apply on a brush , and been using colour Royale 8.1 , I use 30 ml of colour and 30 Ml of toner and 15 ML water.
    I have a really nice light brown hair naturally and have blond balayage.
    Lots of people compliment my hair and ask my hairdresser and when I say I do everything myself people can’t believe it !
    I use a brush and apply the mixture into a plastic brush and create my balayage ! Save yourself $$$$$
    After the colour and washing I use a toning mask ($25 ) every month !
    Good luck everyone !

    Good informative video! I’ll try that when I tone my hair next month... I recently just purchased a creme ash toner and a 6% developer to tone my hair.. but I’m a bit confused with what the sales lady told me.
    She told me that I would also need to mix color in the mixture as well. Her explanation was: 60g developer 6% + 30g ash color + 30g toner creme.
    Can’t seem to find anyone suggesting that. Is that mixture possible?

      Hi, sorry for such a late reply, if you're still looking, I have another fairly short video here: th-cam.com/video/O3Qe-WciE54/w-d-xo.html which explains the theory behind this, but the easy answer is you would use an ash based colour to remove red from bleached hair. Colours like pearls, silvers, platinums etc. will remove oranges and you'll probably want to make a mixture of a couple of shades to get whjat you want :)

    Thanks for this informative video. May I ask, how long can you keep the color tube and developer after it's opened? Will they lose quality if you don't consume them in 2 months?

    • @LemonSodaHair
      @LemonSodaHair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      huh, interesting question, this isn't 100% written in stone but... From my own observations, I'll just say that the developing lotion will be fine for at least a year. I've had developer on my shelf that's been opened but is an uncommon Vol% that's taken me at least a year to get through and was always fine. For the colour itself, I get through it quite quickly, but again, I think I've probably had some 6 months or more and they've always been fine. With the colour, there is sometimes the first 1ml or so in the tube which has been oxidised and tends to discolour, so I will clip that off and discard it and use the fresh stuff underneath. I figure best to be safe. Official word is parroted that it lasts 3 years, but I think that has a lot to do with EU laws rather than reality. Being an inorganic product, it shouldn't really go off, I think if you just clip off that discoloured 1ml then you'll be absolutely fine. Certainly 2 months, I'd say you have no worries at all, as some salons I've worked in have stock levels so high, that I wouldn't be shocked to find them using colour which is sometimes over a year old at least.
      In short, no worries. I wouldn't be concerned using it myself. Hope this is helpful and thanks for the good question!

    • @terrikerenza4581
      @terrikerenza4581 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He's diluting the developer
      Some stylists do this when they run out of lower developer
      Say you need 6% but only have 12%
      If you mix the amount you need so say you need 40ml, you would mix 20ml water and 20ml of 12%. This will bring it down to 6%
      You can do this for the other ones to.
      Developer is water based.
      Him using the water for the tonner lowers it down to what he needs and also gives him less thick consistency to help apply the tonner faster because when you apply tonner it needs to go on fast so you get even tones.

  • @impulsivecrafting
    @impulsivecrafting ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok. You used mm, ml and gms. Which one is it? Toner and developer weigh more than water, so it's not 1 to 1 in ml. It's in grams. If you used a measuring cup for these amounts, you'd get a completely different mixture. You'd end up with much much less water.

    Developer comes in different persentage.how can I use it with a particular colour

    • @LemonSodaHair
      @LemonSodaHair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sorry for the late reply, you would use a specific % developer depending on the result you want. Rule is:
      3% for depositing tone or going darker.
      6% for covering grey hair and lifting up to 1 level
      9% for lifting 2-3 levels
      12% for lifting up to 4 levels.
      Level refers to the "depth" of your original colour or how light/dark it is. 1 would be black and 10 would be VERY light blonde. My hair is around a level 6-7. First you determine your current level, pick a colour and then the % of developer that will achieve that.
      Example: My hair is level 6. I want to go to 8 so I would pick 9%. Hope that helps!

      Hi! Thanks for your comment! I made another video about toning and specifically length of time for developing here: th-cam.com/video/O3Qe-WciE54/w-d-xo.html
      But, in short, when you tone hair, it's less about time and more about what it looks like, so you want to watch it as the colour develops and remove once it has toned enough. 5 minutes is a good rule of thumb, but you might find yourself doing it multiple times. To be precise, it's definitely better to just watch the colour as it changes. Depending on what you want the result to be, how porous your hair is, which tones you're removing the time can be as quick as 2 minutes to 25 minutes+.
      Also, yeah! You just apply it all over your head as quick as possible, you don't need to be too precise, just make sure it's saturating the hair with plenty of product!

    Hi- thanks so much for doing this service for us! wondering if you have any idea the ratio or amount of NN goldwell dye you add to a regular formula when you have grey?

    • @LemonSodaHair
      @LemonSodaHair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem :) When covering grey, you need to first analyse how much grey you have roughly, so for example 25/50/75/100% grey, then you basically add the NN to replace the grey, so if you're 25% grey, you'll need 25% NN, 50% grey you'll need 50% NN, 75%+ is 75% NN Hope that helps, any questions, let me know!

    I just did my roots using 8a and 20 vol. And I didn't leave it on long enough and it's a light orange (in the house it looks light a very light like Sandy blonde but outside in the sunlight it definitely is a very light orange). What kind of toner would I use to get rid of the orange? I'm looking for a Sandy blonde ( like the color Jennifer Anniston has her hair lightened to) and would I just put that on the orange hair then add all over the last 5 minutes?

      Are the roots any darker than the rest of your hair or is it about even in terms of light/dark, just the tone that's off?

      @@LemonSodaHair the roots are a little darker than the rest of my hair. After using some purple shampoo my roots are like a light strawberry blonde. Someone at Sally's said I should use Wella T14 toner but I wanted to wait to see what you said first before I tried anything

      Yeah that's not a bad call, T14 is blue based, so you don't need to worry about it turning your ends khaki/green. It *might* turn the ends a little grey so you might want to watch it carefully. Another little thing, some blue based tones can look really dark on your hair, but it's alright, you can just get a strip of kitchen towel and use it to strip the colour off the hair as much as you can to check it, if it hasn't developed enough to get where you want, just recover it again. Tint won't lift tint so the actual levels (light/darkness) will stay the same as you are now, but doing as you said will likely remove that orange and give you a relatively even tone that has slightly darker roots than the rest but that's okay and should look nice as long as you don't have a defined line with the roots. If you do have a really definite line... things get a bit trickier :)

      Oh, just to add, if it does turn the ends a tiny bit grey (it won't be like super gray, just a gentle hue probably) that will wash out really quick, so it's not the worst thing to happen in the world.

      @@LemonSodaHair thank you so much, I was going to try and just put the toner on my roots so I don't run into it may be turning gray 😇

    If putting this mix on, should the hair be wet or dry?

      Towel dry your hair and you can put it straight on to damp hair :)
