    Remember when Tesla included a 40 amp mobile charger? Pepperidge farm remembers

    The national electrical code defines any load ran 3 hours or more as continuous. Coutinous loads are only to use 80% of the circuit rated ampacity. This prevents overloading and the circuit from overheating, causing any damage. This is why the larger home charger can only use 48amps on a 60amp, and the mobile can use 32 amps on a 40amp, and 12amp on a 15amp circuit. This product technical isn't safe by NFPA 70 standards unless it prevents you from being at the higher amperage for 3 hours or more.
    Love the channel.

      14-50 is a 50A service. That's why 40A should be good for continuous use IMO.

    Jim, Temperature protection at the outlet is a must. I’ve had several occasions where my Tesla UMC derated to 16A from 32A. The happened frequently at RV/Campsites where the infrastructure was old. Tarnished wire connections cause resistance (heat)
    Also, unless you have an old home. NEC requires all receptacles to be on 20A circuits even if the outlet is a standard Nema 5-15 it’s still on a 20A rated circuit. This is why you can usually upgrade to a Nema 5-15/20A outlet. You can pull 15A safely since that’s 75% of the 20A circuit.

    You didn’t mention about the breaker. If your plug was set up with 32A max in mind you may only have a 40A breaker. Pulling 40A continuous on a 40A breaker could be a hazard. Also as you could see you charger was actually pulling 40.3A which means a 40A breaker will pop. In my mind if you’re already set up for the 32A mobile charger this is not a valuable upgrade. If you are shopping and still deciding on your charging set up then there could be some value in this, however the difference between 32A/240V can 40A/240V is negligible the end of the day when you’re charging at night. 32A is still plenary if power delivered too to get quick shot during the day when needed.

      Agreed. If you have a properly wired 14-50 plug, you should have the wiring and breaker to support the 50A service. I have a 60A breaker and wiring on mine.

    Google Tesla Mobile Connector melted receptacle. An EV is a much different load than a home range which never runs with the oven and all burners on full for hours. There will be field problems with this for sure. Hopefully it has temperature monitoring at the attachment plug and has been certified by someone other than the Chinese factory that built it. The NEC is based on a long list of assumptions and just because a circuit is rated 50A doesn't mean you can run it at 40A continuously. For a 50A 14-50 circuit, the assumption is it likely won't ever draw 40A and if so, only for a few minutes with hours between use to cool down. Tesla now allows a max of 32A with their cord connected charger for a very good reason.

      Those old model S's are pretty cheap nowadays. You would just need to ensure you have a 100 amp circuit.

    Did you know you can cut off ne neutral terminal of the adapter so one plug canbe used in a 30A dryer socket or a 40A stove socket? That terminal is not connected to anything. Also, i think tesla monitors the voltage as it draws current and when it detects toomuch drop it will reduce the load. Important if you have something else connected to the same circuit to prevent breaker pop

      Hogwash - the car doesn't care what brand of charging cable is supplying the electricity as long as it complies with the J1772 communication protocol. He would have to disable ALL level 2 charging. Total FUD.

    This is interesting to me. My previous level 2 charging set up had a really thick beefy cable and with the ccs to Tesla adapter I thought it just pulled down too much on my new Tesla's charge port. So I switched to the Tesla mobile connector. From the video I see a thicker cable. Do you think its weight is an issue? Thanks for another great video.

    • @jowualife
      @jowualife 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It’s definitely got more girth than the Tesla version, which is necessary to do the 40A charging.

    One just doesn't need to charge faster at home. I've had a Model 3 for 6 years and I never needed to charge faster than the 32A, 7kW. Even now having added a Model Y and only one charger. There is still no need. Vehicles sit for many hours everyday, plenty of time for a 3.5 or 4.5 hour charge, if that.

      I can see a value - especially when you are traveling and a 50A service is available.

    • @kevinJmadsen
      @kevinJmadsen 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ I could see that happening, albeit rarely, though I never used level 2 charging while traveling. That's a 3+ hour charge just to go from 50% to 80% and I'm not sure where you would find that, KOA?
