- (ATLANTIC OCEAN) - The future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is underway for the first time conducting at-sea tests and trials in the Atlantic Ocean, Dec. 7. The multi-mission ship will provide independent forward presence and deterrence, support special operations forces, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces. Very much so. I think that the battleships and heavy cruisers of that era all had very fine lines and an organic beauty to them. I was genuinely sad when I heard they were decommissioned. At least they are still around, and can be visited. If you're ever overseas, be sure to check out the HMS Belfast in London. It's a like a cute tiny version of the Iowa class. You can also explore almost the ENTIRE ship, which you can't do on any of our battleships.

all i have to say is: regardless how it looks (like the Navy cares about looks when that bitch is built for fucking warfare) it looks like its modeled after the first Ironclad American Warships during the Civil War just a whole lot bigger. I am impressed.

It looks like the bottom is a ship but upside down and the top looks like a huge submarine or something. I don't know whether I like it or not yet, but I guess it's important to do it this way in order not to get noticed. But then again, IF someone would do some harm, the USA has still so many non-stealth destroyer type of ships they can attack eventually....I think it's not well spend (4 Billion dollars that is) with so many people still living in poverty in the USA.

+Pre114 its meant to replace the role of the battleship the usa retired a couple of years back.. its designed to suppress enemy defenses in support of amphib landings.
It's actually incredibly useful in aiding with amphibious assaults. It's designed to sail through shallower water than what the other US DDG's can handle. And it holds a lot more fire power, which can make a battle easier. So the US is filling the gaps that have been left by retiring other ships, much like the USS Gerald R Ford, which costs even more, but it relieves stress on the US carrier fleets that are slightly overburdened.
$4 B /unit is the estimated cost for original 32 units contract , but navy decided to reduce it to only 3 units due to whatever reason, with only 3 units actually built , the cost is close to about $8B/unit.

At one time I was starting to believe that is what our next generation of warships would appear. And I have yet to see any missile launches. Did we ever find ammo for the guns? I was wondering if Army or Marines rounds would work in them.

+Cali it's designed to carry it yes, but i do not believe it has been fitted with it yet as the rail gun is still in trials and this is a simple shakedown of the ship. Either way, it's gonna be awesome
+Cali It doesnt have the Railgun installed. It has twin 155mm guns. Thats what those 2 enclosures are on the bow of the ship.

squidplaysSTUf the EMRG (railgun) isn't ready for "prime time" yet. Still lots of work and engineering needs to be done to get it installed on a ship. There is talk about putting it on DDG 1000 hulls, but that is still 5-7years out. We probably won't see the deployment of the railgun till the early-mid 2020s, depending on the fiscal environment in that timeframe.

I have to say when I first saw a "stealth ship" in "Tomorrow Never Dies", I thought, a stealth ship is a submarine why would you spend nearly as much money on something is almost as stealthy and can't do the naval magic trick of sinking and coming back up on the other side of the world.
I still don't quite get it, but it looks nice and we've already paid for it.

+balalajke accordeone Plans were to build 32 Zumwalt-class destroyers so a lot of money was spent on research & development because the cost was going to be spread out over those 32 vessels. The program was cut to 3 ships so the research and development costs are now only spread out over 3 vessels. The per vessel cost is $3.7 billion.
