I like to add that what you see here is unique, to the whole world, actually. The flight school for Swedish pilots is based on a mentorship where the trainer have one or two cadets to mentor. No shouting or telling but good communication and inspire to think by themselves. Where will be no 1st of class, best pilots, grades on accomplishment. Instead an environment of teamship, of teamwork and sharing expediencies take hold and produce some of the best pilots in the world. If a cadet struggle the school change mentor to see if it will help to change the dynamics, they don't sack the cadet as the first choice.
Yes, they spend 2 years to become an officer before they start actually training to be a pilot. The SK-60 aircraft they use in this series was actualy retired last year after being in service since 1967. Sweden was unique in the sense that we didn't use a propeller aircraft as the first step to train our pilots in the basics of flight, they went straight for a Jet. This is no longer the case after they replaced the SK-60 with the new SK-40 Basic Trainer (don't ask me why a newer plane was given a lower number, it doesn't make any sense at all.)
At 09:58 he says "My father flew the kite,,," He's actually saying that his father flew the J35 Draken. Drake = Dragon but the word 'drake' is also used for kite. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_35_Draken
The two years before this day is the regular Officer school (at Karlberg Military Academy which was referenced) which is the same for everyone who becomes an Officer.
To be a Swedish fighter pilot today you will go through 78 months of training. You study the first four semesters at the Swedish Defense University and the Military Academy Karlberg, including theoretical foundations for becoming an officer. Semesters five and six are basic flight training at the Flight School in Linköping, after which you take the officer's exam and are employed. Then follows about 1.5 years of advanced flight training in Italy at Galatina AFB, followed by tactical training at Decimommanu in Sardinia, including air combat, low flying and ground target combat. After that you can look forward to the type training on the JAS 39 Gripen, which takes place at Skaraborg Air Wing (F 7) in Såtenäs. Finally, you will be placed in one of the squadrons and continue for about 2 years with basic air battle training (GSFU) and deepen your knowledge in the roles of fighting, attacking and reconnaissance, which will hopefully result in a fully trained fighter pilot who can fly live missions.
The translation of this series is overall quite good. There have been some comments regarding the translation of "draken" and in this case kite is the correct one and not dragon. It was named that because of its profile from above which resembles a kite.
The SK60 (SAAB 105) was retired during 2024 after about 60 years of service in the Swedish airforce, as a trainer aircraft. It will be replaced with a simpler turboprop aircraft, which as I understand it will be used as the initial training plane for new pilots to learn the basics in. They will then switch over to train on the JAS 39 Gripen sooner than they do in this series. In the series, you are shown a sort of roadmap at the bottom a couple of times - there you can see where they stop using the trainer aircraft. So I'm thinking only the first/second steps will use the new trainer aircraft going forward. My guess is that they want the pilots to get access to the Gripen quicker so that they get more time in the aircraft they will actually fly once they graduate. A turboprob trainer will also be cheaper to operate, so there is that too.
This is a great series! There are some dodgy translations here and there, but overall I think you'll get the big picture. One small thing, just for those who do not speak Swedish, you might want to move the little picture of you just slightly up as it sometimes covers the subtitles. Looking forward to the next episode!
One of the guys lied about a eye surgery, at the time the air force didnt accepct candidates with perfect vision if it was corrected with surgery. So the guy lied about it. Now they do allow surgery, but trust is gone and they wont allow him back
"Father and fly" 😂 Far is the word for father. And also an old word for go. It is like a fun thing to say. And the "kite"(draken). Yes it might look like a kite, but it is the also the word for dragon. 😅
I cant understand how a country like sweden, wich always have been so proud of its air force doesent pay these guys a decent salary!? Its really a joke..

Intresting!! Where can i read more about this?
Sweden used to take in a lot of trainees and fail them out but switched to a system where people have already been failed out in the testing.
Finally you react to this series! Great job 👏
Thank you mate, great recommendation! 🤙

The Draken looks a bit like a Kite so the name have double meanings.. like the AT4, 84mm and Anti Tank :)

The SK 60 trainer aircraft, which they use in this series. That model has been taken out of service and replaced with a new trainer aircraft.
This is a great series!! 😊
