(Aug.7, 1920 - Nov. 28, 2013). Although she wrote the song, she is not the one singing here. Others have posted that they think this is Lorin Sklamberg (he was one of the founders of the Klezmatics). I think so, too, but it would be nice if Ante would confirm this. I think crediting "Magrudergrind" is incorrect.

The shtetyl was no panacea. The shtetyl was the American concept on how our grandparents lived.. hate,pogroms, etc.. if it were such an Edén why did they all try to get while they could. We died in europe by 1945. We do nt belong there. That is reality...mir zaynin doh!
And a home is a home אַ הײם איז אַ הײם, the feelings you feel when you enter your home are unexplainable, you can't truly call a far away place with a different weather and a different language and a different everything your home, what you can do is to make it your home. This song speaks about someone coming back to the place that once was his home but has changed, like most of these places that were and now there might be another place in the same location and with the same name seemingly identical but it is another. It reminds me of my mother when she comes back to her childhood house and although not a lot has changed she feels as if she is a stranger in her own place, and this feeling is awful and terrible and very very sad, this is actually what the song's talking about.

But there were lives in the shtetl, and culture and for many, it was kind of a home
