I was wondering if 25 roaches is enough to start a colony?Im in Canada and I’ve been looking for dubias for a long time and they are really hard to come across at my reptile store.I finally managed to find 25 roaches but the thing is I don’t know if I have only males or females they are all the same size and the same color brown.Anyway Im going to try regardless hopefully I will end up with good results.

Hi Victoria. Surprised you got your hands on some. Dubia are extremely restricted and controlled in Canada so I'm not surprised you are not finding them. You're not going to know what you have until their last instar (molt) when they emerge as male or female. Once they do, hopefully you have more females than males because you want to keep the ratio 1:4 or 1:5 (Male to Female) or the males will fight each other and chew up their wings. You can definitely start a colony with a few roaches but It will take a good while to establish a colony that will sustain feeders for your pets. Have you looked at Discoids? They might have lifted the ban on them in Canada.

@@mightydubiafeeders thank you so much for the response!I think the reason why I was able to find some is because I live on a reservation. They just opened a new reptile store here so technically there’s no law against dubias on the reserve so the store is aloud to sell them.I had them for about 10 days now and they seem to do good. They are still kind of small so I will definitely keep an eye on them to make sure I don’t have too many males. Thanks for the info!

@@victoriahilton62 Could you maybe ask the store owner to order more for you and you pay them ahead of time? Let them know you are trying to grow a small colony if you think that is reasonable. Good luck! 😀

@@mightydubiafeeders ohh yeah and I forgot to say they are pretty expensive,I bought 25 roaches 2 weeks ago and they were 30$.I went back this week and they are now 25 roaches for 40$.😳

@@victoriahilton62 oh man yeah Dubia can be much more expensive than other kinds of feeder insects but we are breeding discoid and those for us are more expensive to get into too. What kind of pet do you have?? If its a reptile like a bearded dragon, then maybe while your colony gets going, purchase less expensive feeders like crickets, mealworms and superworms for an occasional treat. That's what we do and maybe in Canada you can get Discoid Roaches for less. Just a thought. Good luck Victoria 😀
