    really enjoyed your reviews mate, my son bought me the DD quilt for Christmas and I haven't seen any reviews on it until yours, I was going to try it out in the next couple of weeks but after your review, I think I will leave it until the spring comes and then give it a go, thanx for taking the time to review these products, ATB Richie, Wales

      Ha ha yeah. On it's own it's not sufficient in this weather but it is a good bit of kit.
      Thanks for the kind words!

    I got the Jura 2 XL. Smaller and lighter than my Arctic army bag and is great for -5c or warmer. Water proof foot box great bonus. Only down ( no pun) side is the two way zip. First time out, I got up in the early hours to answer a call of nature and the the zip opened all the way out of the zipper. Bit of a faff trying to get it together in the dark at -4c (ish). Since poked a couple of small holes thought the zip material and fitted a tie wrap an inch from the bottom of the zip. Sorted

      I've had that problem before, that's a good fix!

    Hi Daniel, I used the DD Jura last week for 2 days in the snow and had no problems with it all. I did however have a problem with the condensation in my DD Travel Hammock Bivi, woke up both morning and it was a bit wet down the sides. I also used the DD Underblanket for the first time, but I'm not sure I had it set up correctly. Never mind, still had good time in cold conditions. Atb Glenn.

      I often hear comments about condensation being a problem. I've not noticed it myself! I must be doing something 'right' accidentally but I don't know what it is.
      I used to think it was because I was using the XL tarp and could hang it higher, but in the Jungle Hammock, I just use the rain fly clipped over the arches. Occasionally there'll be a little condensation in the morning but not enough to cause a problem.
      I think all the cinch cords and toggles on the under-blanket end up making you feel like you haven't 'done it right' - and the idea that you can adjust it from in the hammock is nice but, in most cases, you still have to move around in the hammock in order to adjust it, so you can't hold the shape you want to adjust it to!
      Before getting into the hammock, just make sure there's no gap between hammock and under-blanket at the head and foot ends. In a normal DD hammock (not the Superlight or an asymmetrical hammock), the under-blanket should come up around the side a little; reach grab each side and just 'shuggy' it a little and you should be able to feel the a rush of cool air bfore it settles into place again. Pay attention to where you still feel cold after it settles and then try and adjust with that in mind.
      But really, as long as it's not gaping open at either side or end, then it'll be keeping you warmer than not having anything!

      Daniel Romani Hi Daniel, I never had any problems before, but this time I had condensation. I was wondering if it might have something to do with the Underblanket as I used the DD Underblanket for the first time at that meet up at Stinchar Bridge. I wasn't sure if it was just the extreme cold with all the snow or something I had done wrong. Somebody said the condensation probably happened because I way lying n my side and breathing on the fabric? Atb Glenn.

      Well, the greater the difference between your temperature and ambient temp, and the closer you are to the tarp, are the two main factors in condensation. So if the underblanket kept you warmer and side sleeping moved you closer to the tarp, then maybe that was the cause. It could just have been a lack of breeze to ventilate your micro-climate though... I'd say keep hanging and if it keeps happening then think about your setup.

    Daniel, just out of interest what camping mat do you use. I do a lot of hammock camping in my DD frontline but only use a cheap self inflating mat under me.
    Great videos by the way.

      I use the Exped Synmat 7 and, although you have to do CPR on it to inflate it, I absolutely LOVE it. It always keeps me warm.

    How much is the Hammock Quilt bro?!

  • @JasperJanssen
    @JasperJanssen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, slightly off topic, but I just wanted to check if my understanding of your total system as of this video is correct: from top to bottom, there's the 2013 non-superlight DD Jungle Hammock rain fly, bug net, bag/quilt to taste, and hammock, then the DD underquilt, (no second rain fly underneath, right?), then the old second-hand hammock as baggage net, all suspended with the whoopie strings, and with the DD XL snake bag to go over it?

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's right. Although I do have the 2nd rainfly underneath to act as a wind stopper. I also have the XL tarp in a separate snake skin ready to go should the weather turn really nasty.

    Hi Daniel, Great review i found it very helpful, just out of interest what size is your jura 2 Reg or XL?

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure mine's just a regular. I'm short, I'd drown in the XL!

      +Daniel Romani cheers dan I was curious as I'm thinking of getting one but I'm not keen on mummy style sleeping bags as they are restrictive and I like to have lots of room to move about, you look to be about the same size as me and yours seemed to be just about right

    the waterproof footbox is a deal breaker..seems a good tight bag...I've a snugpak and tbh it's crap lol

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deal Breaker? How so? Are you worried about sweaty feet or something?

    • @markc2951
      @markc2951 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Romani usually when I go camping I drink some beer so I go to the loo 2 or 3 times a night and have a blue foam mat on the ground for getting in and out..it's not heavy it's just bulky to carry with you..I would be inclined to hop along in the bag to pee lol
      its handy just to zip it down and do your thing and not worry about wet feet.

    • @DanielRRomani

    the quilt is light duty, not enough for wintery nights even our aussie winter nights. i have the jura 2 ,i use the jura 2 as a quilt because its a centre zip it fits well as a quilt. but seriously still the jura 2 is not really suitable for sub zero camping, even with the dd underblanket on my dd superlight hammock i was really cold on a 2c night

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it seems much harder to stay warm in a hammock than in a tent! I wish there was an effective, lightweight solution to winter hammocking.

    • @MrAustruck
      @MrAustruck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Romani there is a simple light solution, get a american/canadian top and underquilt there designed for serious sub zero hammocking ,even available for individual hammock brands such as Jacks R Better winter nest ,made to fit the hennessy. it also will work with standard hammocks ,hammock gear have a great range as well . but these are serious down filled lightweight specialty items ,a good down top,bottom matching set will set you back from 700 to 900 US dollars ,plus about 90 US shipping, i would love to get something like that but seriously ?? carry a extra woolen blanket maybe. google hammock underquilt and you will see what i mean .

      +Josuah Duffy Ha ha, yeah, I should have said "effective, inexpensive solution"!

    Why is your hammock touching the ground? Is that supposed to be doing that?

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      That's not actually my part of the hammock, that's the gear hammock I have slung underneath (see my other bids for mods I've made).
      Generally I find that if I hang my hammock at a comfortable height for me to get in and out of then, because I'm quite short, the gear hammock ends up just touching the ground. This actually helps to lower the centre of gravity so that the hammock doesn't swing too much and make me feel seasick, so I'm quite happy with the setup.
