      Well, you have picked the coldest time of year to try it! 😆 I always wear thick fleecy socks too. Good luck and have fun!

    Daniel, I took your point about the diagonal lay and the under-blanket alignment with the hammock. To get around that I clipped the end lines of the DD underblanket up onto the ridgeline that I use and then just used a clothes peg or pin to restrict the mini-carabiners from sliding down too far. This allowed the underblanket to wrap up higher and prevented my feet in a diagonal lay from sticking out the side of the underblanket or beyond the end. I can even skew the underblanket a bit on the diagonal lining up with my body better. Obviously the cinch cord at the end wasn't tightened as much. Great product at a great price and great video from you. Thanks

    I fitted a ring at each end of my hammock and fixed the end carabiners to these, doubled over, pulled the quilt tight and close

      That sounds really interesting! Do you have any photos/videos?

    I have this underblanket. Considering the price, it's very good. It packs small, is reasonably light, looks to fit most hammocks easily, and it's well made. I've used it a handful of occasions now, with night temperatures as 'warm' as 5° or 6°, where I was mostly comfortable, down to around the temp of it's advertised maximum comfort limit of -5°, where I wasn't. It just doesn't seem to have the fill power required to offer decent comfort down to that temperature. I'd say 5° would be the lower limit for me. Perhaps they should revise the advertised comfort spec for this, and offered it to be a 2-3 season quilt, I'd give it 10/10.

      Yeah, I wouldn't say it's sufficient for below single digit temperatures. I've been using it indoors, in my unheated attic room over the winter and, by itself, it's not enough. Also, I'm using it with a standard gathered end hammock and it struggles to match my shape when I'm sleeping on the diagonal. It works much much better with Dr's travel or jungle hammock.

    Nice review, thanx.
    I think the dilemma you mention, cold feet or cold head, comes from the fact that the underblanket is narrower than the hammock. Do you think that if the underquilt would have been a couple of inches wider the problem would be solved? I,m thinking towards ordering a snugpack underquild, witch is more expensive and heavier, bud larger, about the same with as the dd lightweight mammock.
    Sleap warm,
    Bas

    Hi Vectis,
    I imagine a wider underquilt would keep you warmer by providing more coverage, the trade-off as you say, is size, weight and cost - but a good night's sleep is important. Let me know how you get on with it.

    It looks like you have the ends of the underblanket fairly taut, narrowing it at the ends. I wonder if you loosen them up a bit, if that would provide you better coverage at the head and foot ends.

      I started out leaving those ends quite loose but I find that it allows too much air movement and negates much of the warmth the UQ is supposed to provide.

    Great review! So would you say that 35f is pushing it? Would it be fair to say this is a 3 season under quilt? Also have you got to demo the DD top quilt ? Thanks

      +Short Round's Gear Reviews Hi!
      I guess I'd say it's a 3 season item, yes, but just add an exped synmat 7 and you're good to go for winter =0) Or the Jura 2 sleeping bag - that's plenty warm.
      If by top quilt, you mean their new hammock quilt, that also clips & cinches together around the neck and feet, then yes, I've tested that too, you can see that video here: th-cam.com/video/nS04owXEJ0I/w-d-xo.html

      Daniel , i realized after i asked those questions, you had reviewed the other item i was also interested in.
      So the DD top quilt by itself you would say 3 seasons too? Are snugpak & dd the same company cause some of the some seems similar?
      Thanks

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say that top quilt was only 2 season really, It's light and thin. I was testing it in early spring and it was still pretty damn cold, it did a decent job but I'd have preferred something warmer - the Jura 2 was overkill in that scenario by my 3 season Pac-Tec was just right if I remember correctly (I haven't re-watched the video, so correct me if I remember it wrong, ha ha).
      I don't know if DD is affiliated with snugpack, it's never been mentioned. Maybe they ise the same supplier or something but I'm just speculating.

    interesting, but my dd travel hammock doesnt have those loops on the side?

      Hmmmm... yours must be an early model I guess? If you ordered it recently, then it'd be worth getting in touch with them.

      I think it is a slightly older version. I got it second hand so can't really complain, I got it for a good price. I can't find your video on how you made you own underquilt using a sleeping bag and tape, any chance of a link? :)

      ***** Oh, I didn't actually video that process, sorry!
      Basically, I just bought a cheap Mummy sleeping bag from an army surplus store then cut down the zip line through the foot box and gaffer taped it up!
      Attaching it to the hammock will be different if you've got no loops. Maybe some shock cords that you can clip onto the suspension...?

    Can you test this with the DD jungle hammock system

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've already done so, although I didn't see fit to make a video about it.
      It works great with the Jungle Hammock. It's possibly slightly warmer than the old sleeping bag I usually use, but it's hard to tell given that it's summer and I use an air mattress anyway!
      You feel even the lightest breeze in the Superlight, so I've gone back to using it with that because it's so quick and easy to set up.

    Hello.I heard that you use a exped mat. Hos is it in the hammock? Dosent it get a weird shape when you sleep on it. Is it the synmat ul you havet or what thickness dö ypu think is good. Sorry for the spelling :)

    • @DanielRRomani
      @DanielRRomani  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes I use the Exped Synmat 7 LW. (The long and wide) and I cannot recommend it highly enough! The reason I get away with using an old sleeping bag as a badly fitting undequilt is because the Synmat does a fantastic job of retaining my body heat.
      I also find that it means you don't have to worry about ridges forming in the hammock.
      It fits better in some Hammocks than others. It's at its best in the DD Jungle Hammock or a bridge hammock but is still great in a more traditional gathered end/diagonal lay hammock.
      Some people advocate inflating it only part way for hammock camping, so that it conforms better to the hammock shape but I still prefer to use it fully inflated.
      It's only downside is that it's a pain to inflate it, but the benefit of that is there's no need to pack an air pump.

      Thank you for that! You have convinced me! Thinking of getting out and try out my hammock for the first time in one of the comming weekends.
      Cant you use a small hand pump for the job?
      Thinking of getting myself the ultra light version with the bag pump thing that you buy seperat.
      Thanks for sharing your experience =)
