To be honest, in the 90s I would have never imagined that I would end up having access to a comparison and analysis of VR headsets by an ophthalmologist.
And I already knew all of this, that's why I bought the Q3 a few months ago. But it's so enjoyable to listen to the little details.

Hey everyone I just got my Quest 3s two days ago and here’s my two cents. I am someone who is pretty new to VR. I have never owned a headset myself and I’ve only ever used someone else’s a handful of times several years ago. I think the Quest 3s was worth every penny. The image quality in game is great and you definitely become fully immersed in the games. The blur he speaks about is definitely real but in my opinion, it’s nothing that takes me out of the experience. It is really only noticeable in my far peripheral vision. The pass through is awesome and I have messed around with that more than games right now. The quality of pass through is good, the image is grainy especially in poor lighting. But in a well lit room it was pretty good, I was even able to read stuff on my phone. The quality of media like TH-cam or prime video in pass through was surprisingly good. I watching the full dungeons and dragons movie and had no issues. Is the quality better than my 4k tv?? Heck no. But I can’t take my tv in every room with me and resize the screen however I want. Is it better than watching something on my tablet or phone? Heck yes! The headset is awesome and as someone who is new to VR I believe the price point of the Quest 3S is an amazing deal.
Oh and the Arkham Shadow game that is included is Fu***** AMAZING!! If y’all have any questions feel free to ask, I’ll do my best to answer anything😁

Is there any way to reduce the blurriness in the peripherals of the lenses? In Arkham Shadow, any time a text box appears in the top left or right corners of the lenses, I can _BARELY_ read it.
I don't wear glasses or contacts, so the prescription add-on lenses would be useless to me.

    • @iMizchief
      @iMizchief หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@elwoodjacobs4353 I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’m also playing through the game right now. The most important thing I’ve noticed about these lenses is making sure you are in that sweet spot, that means making sure the lenses are in the correct position and your headset strap is properly adjusted so you are getting the clearest image possible. Other than that there is not a whole lot you can do to change it. It is one of the downsides of the lenses and the main reason this headset cost $200 less than the premium.

I just bought a 3s and yeah…. That sweet spot is freaking tiny. You have to move your head and look to find the sweet spot, it’s not super noticeable when gaming or watching something but as soon as you go to read…. Haha, good luck. Things I wish I knew before I bought, but oh well.

A small advice for the guys, who wear glasses, but for some reasons can't buy VR lenses with prescription (for example, those are hard to get in my country), buy some silocon protection for you lenses, it won't let you glasses' lenses touch the lenses of a VR headset, saving them both from scratching

quick clarification as per Through The Lenses footage
the better processor lets the 3s do more software magic (apart from simply rendering at a higher resolution), which makes it look better than the 2
not even counting in game assets being able to be higher quality, the software algorithm used to display the pixels on the screen is a bit better
it's still the same lens and display, but the software difference does make it look better

Why did people expect the quest 3s to have the cream of the crop pancake lences? There is no way that Meta would ever make their cheaper headset compete with their more expensive standard for standalone vr. With that said tho, the biggest blunder Meta made with the 3s was to not include a proper IPD system. That could actually solve a lot of the blurriness.

The user-facing lenses in the Quest headsets (all models) are plastic, and though they're obviously optical-grade, they're not as scratch-resistant as glass lenses. So the advice to be careful about what type of cloth you use to clean them is good. Further inside the headset the other lenses in the system are glass. Meta chose to use plastic for the user-facing lenses both for safety (less likely to shed little bits into the user's eyes than glass, when scratched), as well as weight and cost savings.

I have the quest 3. Frankly using quest game optimizer and either contacts or for convinience I use Zenni prescription that literally clip onto the quest which helps a lot. That being said I can’t imagine plastic right in front of the screen doesn’t help.
I think I had to put things into context. When I stopped treating the quest like a game console and more like an arcade machine well it’s the damn coolest arcade machine out there.
Also, if I imagine the quest as having the power of like a ps4 with how it has to render at 72 hz minimum, ideally 90 or 120fps it makes sense a ps4 looks like trash.
I mean it’s a switch on steroids in a headset that has to double render at a very high fps. Consoles and pc render one image. So double the rendering cost. And almost none of my series x games reach 120fps.
I don’t think I’ll ever be a big vr guy it also hurts my neck I have neck pain. But for a disabled person it does provide a way to get some physical exercise and movement. Better yet it’s a lot more fun than a Wii.
My god is it a pain to do tho. I hate being disabled makes life so much harder.

    Q3S vs Q3
Pros of the Q3S compared to the Q3:
    - **16% better binocular overlap** this creates 2 circular "nose shadows" on Q3 screen which ~16% more noticeable than in Q3S because the Q3 lenses have 16% less surface area.
    - **40% or 20% cheaper (depending on Q3S version)**
    - 20 more minutes (+14%) of battery life (though battery life isn’t very important since you can just use a power bank in your pocket with the cable inside your shirt, or use swappable batteries and basically have infinite battery)
    - Ability to play in the dark (it has 2 IR illuminators)
    - For the same game/situation the Quest 3S actually has the *potential* for 30% higher fps/fidelity than Quest 3 (because it has the same internal specs but lower resolution).
Cons of the Q3S compared to the Q3:
    - **23% lower resolution (however they have both the same default eye buffer resolution, which can be further increased using Quest Games Optimiser)**
    - **Uses Fresnel lenses instead of pancake lenses** (see note 2 below)
    - **Less memory space compared to the 512GB version of the Q3**
    - 20% bulkier
    - Less flexible IPD distance settings (Q3S has 3 settings, 58 63 and 68mm and Q3 has a slider 53 to 75mm)
Note 1: Q3 and Q3S have the same GPU, CPU, default eye buffer resolution, VRAM, RAM, passthrough quality and color, fps range (72fps-120fps), weight, etc.
Note 2: For me, the difference in lenses wasn’t significant compared to the difference in resolution (I’d say about 70% of the difference in image quality between headsets comes from resolution). But reading comments on Reddit, it’s clear that some people notice a big difference

What about motion sickness? I'm having trouble getting this thing to rest on my head comfortably, especially trying to figure out the sweet spot especially since it all seems the three adjustments for the lenses.. like I'm in between them or something. The up down left right and the distance and the tilt and it sliding in my face like you said pulling my eyelids out squeezing my head. I used it for a while yesterday but I did end up motion sick and I've seen suggestions about that but also it's not as clear as I would like, specifically text and the edges and the rays. I'm seriously considering updating too the 3 instead of 3s because the larger sweet spot and more pixels shines like my solution but I'm not sure if I'm even wearing the thing correctly in terms of lining my eyes up with the sweet spot and I think this has to have contributed to the motion sick feeling I was getting. (Yes I also read about vrlegs, teleporting, not using smooth motion. I didn't even know where those settings are tbh I haven't done much other than explore the metaverse stuff you start with. I just spent the last hour playing with the head strap trying to get it comfortable and positioned correctly with the least amount of blue and it gets pretty in focus but doesn't seem exactly right and the edges stretch a lil and it slips out of the sweet spot on my face and just everything you mentioned lol it's frustrating I've had this for a day

Nausea is more affected by frame rate than visual clarity. Some games will use a low refresh like 72hz to make the visuals look better which might contribute. But even with high frame rate many people would still have a period of adaptation because the brain has to get used to that type of stimuli via (gradual) exposure

    • @John-5737
      @John-5737 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@quidnunc01100% correct. This is also why many people have problems with 3D movies. Expectingly 3D movies should be more natural/true to life and therefore more comfortable to watch which they are but the fact that you see something that looks so close to reality in only 24FPS messes with your brain and can give you great discomfort and nausea/headaches. That's why some movie directors are using higher frame rates like James Cameron for Titanic and the Avatar movies (but it's still only 48fps with some scenes in 24fps), Peter Jackson with The Hobbit movies and Ang Lee for Gemini man and Billy Lynn which were even done in 120fps which is so much more comfortable to watch and also way more realistic/immersive. And there are many more movies like Kung Fu Panda 4, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Wild Robot and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
