Worth noting the guy who made that good GBA port of Sonic 1 is Simon Thomley, AKA Stealth, AKA Headcannon. The guy who worked with Christian Whitehead on the mobile ports of Sonic 1 and 2 (not CD though) as well as Mania. Man's programming skills are top notch, definitely far better than whoever worked on the official port.
Fun Fact: Sonic 1 GBA is a port of the mobile java version from 2005. Both of them use the same font, the same weird hitboxes and even have the same missing notes on the music
I recall hearing Sonic 1 GBA was actually just running off the same engine as Sonic Advance. However if what you said is true then that's as impressive for the Java version as it is depressing for the GBA version
@Polocatfan Last year someone made a hack of the java version of Sonic 1 and realised how similar the two version are. The port itself could have being made by SEGA in house but it's a port of the java version, not from the original.
I legitimately think they didn’t start making Sonic Origins until it was announced. The release date is next year, plus all the footage is from already existing versions of the games.
Ikr? And they weren't even like "Hey Christian Whitehead, could we borrow soem specific footage of the Sonic 3 mobile pitch?" just to have widescreen support to put people at rest.
9:00 Fun(?) fact: They're still in the game's files, they just disabled them. Why? I have no idea. 10:05 It's important to note that BetterSADX is not a mod itself, but a mod installer that includes a bunch of mods to improve the game, including the Dreamcast Conversion mod and the Lantern Engine (Dreamcast lighting).
The upside to SCU's PC port is that modders will, as you said, be able to fix everything that remains wrong with it come release. The downside, of course, is that they need to.

Answer to question of the day: sonic genesis was definitely a rushed out anniversary game. Looking at both sonic genesis and the sonic advance games side by side, it's very clear they could have done so much better, but had to release it for the anniversary
Andrew went ham on this one, I’m on my fourth rewatch dude was saucing. QOTD: It was unfinished, plain and simple. Someone mentioned this was ported with the Advanced engine in a month, I believe it. If my limited computer programming classes have taught me anything, it’s that it just needs to kinda work to pass muster, then I can go back to playing flash games.
Honestly I'd say the SADX port is unforgivable, considering it's been used by gaming influencers to negatively re-write Sonic Adventure's reputation. As if it wasn't bad enough that Sega abandoned the Adventure formula after 06. Thankfully modders once again prove how little care was put into the DX ports.

It was a small pocket game, but it really beat using animals to level up your Chao. I already preordered Colors since it is one of my favorite games in the series, although I must admit I am so not impressed by these trailers. Sonic mostly looks off because they shifted the hue of his texture. All the red has been taken out of his muzzle which makes it look almost green. This might be due to the lightning engine, but it’s just one of many questionable choices. I don’t even think modders will fix it since there’s already a ton of work completed on the Dolphin version. Using some graphics packs and mods with the right settings will make the game the most beautiful it has ever been. Honestly I’m just waiting for the day that the port of a Sonic game is the definitive way to play, even SA2B screwed up the lightning engine, although at least it’s in widescreen...except for a few cutscenes.

I decided to try out a widescreen code on the Gamecube version, and it not only looked weird, but it also messed with the camera a lot. Probably why it isn't on the Dolphin wiki. I imagine the creators of Better SADX's widescreen had to do some bug fixes there...
The Game Gear games were still unlockable on the original PC release from 2004. They were disabled (for some reason) when SADX got ported over to XBLA/PSN/Steam.

We have eyes for a reason, yes? I can see what it looks like, and 3 months is not a long time for them to fix everything that doesn't look right. Do you want a sub-par remaster or would you like it to be the best it can be?
I've tried several times to install the "Better Sonic DX" mod and I've simply come to the conclusion that my laptop hates me... So I have that going for me now...
SADX PC has the wonderful advantage of being able to revert everything back to Dreamcast style with mods, including some collision detection that seemed to become broken upon the GC release (anyone who has died endlessly on the loop on the first level knows what I'm talking about, turns out, if you never played the Dreamcast version, that never happens on the Dreamcast)
I 100% agree with you on the PC SADX version, but I think it’s even worse on consoles (at least Xbox 360, I don’t know about PS3), as if you don’t have the DX DLC, then the game pretends it’s the Dreamcast version, but it’s just DX with less features. The same DLC problem happens with SA2B on PC as well.
As you mentioned, the trailer for Sonic Origins showed Sonic 3 & Knuckles in 4:3 as opposed to 16:9, but also notice how the footage of those games looks worse than the previous games shown; that's because as stated at the bottom right corner of the screen, the trailer doesn't feature any footage of the compilation itself but rather uses footage of older versions to show what will be on it, and unlike Sonic 1 and 2, there isn’t an official Widescreen version of Sonic 3 or Knuckles; in fact, it seems that they used a version on an older, lower resolution console, perhaps on original hardware.
Yeah, uh, Fun Fact: that was all gameplays from the original games, including the 2013 versions of the games. The Origins version of 3&K will have widescreen
This was really cool! Too bad you missed the best port of them all: Sonic Blast for Sega Master System. Only released in Brazil, that is only a bit better than Sonic Genesis in my opinion. Also I feel the Sonic Adventure DX pain since I have the PS3 version and had to mod it to always display as if a SCART cable was connected, otherwise it would always display in awfull 4:3 :/
sonic genesis is absolutely unfinished. i made it to labyrinth zone (somehow) and immediately gave up with it because of the water making sonic even slower than he already is
As a fellow Nintendo kid I'd be interested to see some Nintendo content if you ever feel like you need a change from Sonic! I dunno what sort of effect that would have on your numbers but I figure there's a decent crossover there these days
Would not have a great effect on the numbers, but it would have a very positive effect on me. I did a Bowser's Fury video a little while back if you want a break from the Sonic content 👌
My concern on sonic origins is that they don’t have the extra content from the ports on mobile like tails and knuckles from 1,2,Cd playable,I’m also curious if Colors Ultimate Mod would add a lot of content such as recreation on the ds levels and missions
In regards to 3&K in Origins, I believe that they’re giving it the Whitehead treatment since it also appears that those ports are included. Since the games have to be built from the ground up, it makes since that 3&K would be unfinished and that they’d show the original game. The trailer even says that it’s showing footage from the original game, so I don’t think this will be a bad port at all.
According to all sources, the BetterSADX-modpack is outdated and has no upsides over the regular modinstallation. Can we please just begin using unified recources as a community?
For QOTD: I could totally see that Sonic Genesis was Unfinished... Why? Well, even though there isn't that much unused content (according to The Cutting Room Floor Website), the game was made by *ONE, STINKING, PERSON* so there has to be SOME unused content! Y'know, what's Ironic? How The Sonic Series is one of (If not the only) *SEGA'S ONLY FRANCHISES* that flops hard. Usually all of Sega's other Franchises (Like SMT/Persona, Yakuza, NiGHTS, Monkey Ball, Puyo Puyo, etc.) are usually good. That could just be me though... However, Going a _bit_ on topic with Persona, I actually have a Video Idea. Due to these Sonic Videos being rather Gloomy (Then Again, that may be just me because I haven't looked through all these Videos.), I have a bit of a Challenge, Garrulous. I Challenge you to rank *_ALL Major Characters_* from the Persona Series. Here's what I mean by "All Major Characters"... These will include... * The Persona 1 & 2 playable Characters * People of the Velvet Room (You can Count Caroline & Justine/Lavenza as one or two different Characters) * S.E.E.S (+ Female Protagonist and Metis) * The Investigation Team * The Phantom Thieves (+ The New Members of The Phantom Thieves from Both Royal and Strikers) * Important NPCs (Sojiro, Dojima, Nanako, Sae, etc.) * Villians/Bosses (Like the Final Bosses, Palace Rulers, Monarchs, and Shadow Selves for example.) * Characters from the Spinoffs (Like The Dancing Series, Arena Ultimax, Q1 & Q2, and any others I forgot) Confidants are Optional, but you can add them if you want. Now you could do it in the same Fashion as you did for the Sonic Meme Tier List Video, or you could use an Actual Tier List Website. (The Former would be a Better Option, as I don't know if there's a Tier List that has all the Major Characters of Persona) Also you don't *_HAVE_* to do my Gargantuan What if, but I would like it if you did... Other than that giant What If I typed in, Amazing Video as always, Garrulous! *_*Applauds_**
Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis (2006) is a GBA port of the Java version made by IFone. Screen crunch us due to the small screen size of the original GBA, if it didn't have it, it would be very hard to view on a real GBA.
Hey, Garrulous! Have you had the opportunity to read the recent issues of the Sonic IDW comics, specifically issue 41 and the 30th Anniversary Issue? If so, what are your thoughts on both? Specifically, I’d like to know your thoughts on how the Deadly Six are portrayed in issue 41.
After picking up SA DX, I instantly felt no regrets for keeping my copy of the Dreamcast version. Same with SA2 Battle; both ports have jank neither original had. (SA2 Battle is still super stable tho; the fun glitches were patched and it has engine weirdness)
On the topic about SADX Pc not having the game gear games They do, it's just that the Steam port of the game blocks access TO the games. The PC Disk version runs them just fine and with a mod manager can be displayed in the other resolutions; although, it still plays the best in the 4:3 resolution it was made in.
I really want "Sonic Colors Ultimate" to be great. Cause I'm sick of seeing 2000's era Sonic fanboys completely trashing that game's reputation, but I wanna see this remaster be given the quality of life improvements it needs.
@@ChuckE.CheesesIllinois No it really isn't. Colors at least knew what it was and stuck with it. Forces meanwhile was trying to please everyone and ended up pleasing nobody. Colors wasn't a super story focused game so it didn't seem fair for me to be that critical of it's plot. Forces meanwhile was promising a big grand epic story, which is something the Sonic franchise REALLY needs to stop doing cause it almost always ends with embarrassing results.

I dunno if I’d say Yoshi's Island on the GBA is better than the original, because of the smaller screen size being an issue sometimes. I’d argue that SMB2, Super Mario World, and SMB3 were better, but not Yoshi's Island, oddly. I honestly don’t have any answer to the Question of the Day. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was unfinished, but I don’t know why they would rush it, honestly. It may have just been a badly done job.
I'm guessing since it was Sonics 15th anniversary sega probably said ok we need a classic sonic game for the gba and rushed it and put on the store shelves

@@Garrulous64 I'd also love to see more Nintendo videos. There are dozens of us. DOZENS!
That 4:3 aspect ratio didn't stop from having more than 60 hours on sadx for steam
You sure the subscribe button wasn't in Sonic Genesis? I swear I remember it being in this version.
I get some Spax3 flashbacks everytime Sonic Genesis is mentioned
TH-cam has come a long way.
Garrulous at end of vid: thank you for your time
Me: “perfectly balanced as all things should be”
I grew up with SADX, and in my honest opinion, I actually like the SADX models more. I feel pretty unique for saying that lol
Me too tbh
My concern on sonic origins is that they don’t have the extra content from the ports on mobile like tails and knuckles from 1,2,Cd playable,I’m also curious if Colors Ultimate Mod would add a lot of content such as recreation on the ds levels and missions
I always love your humor man lmao
Only problem.
If Sonic Colors Ultimate isnt on steam but is exclusive to EGS.
Good luck modding it.
Confirmations say that 3&K will also be in widescreen too.
@@JDCorp that’s what I said lol
* The Persona 1 & 2 playable Characters
* People of the Velvet Room (You can Count Caroline & Justine/Lavenza as one or two different Characters)
* S.E.E.S (+ Female Protagonist and Metis)
* The Investigation Team
* The Phantom Thieves (+ The New Members of The Phantom Thieves from Both Royal and Strikers)
* Important NPCs (Sojiro, Dojima, Nanako, Sae, etc.)
* Villians/Bosses (Like the Final Bosses, Palace Rulers, Monarchs, and Shadow Selves for example.)
* Characters from the Spinoffs (Like The Dancing Series, Arena Ultimax, Q1 & Q2, and any others I forgot)
Confidants are Optional, but you can add them if you want.
Now you could do it in the same Fashion as you did for the Sonic Meme Tier List Video, or you could use an Actual Tier List Website. (The Former would be a Better Option, as I don't know if there's a Tier List that has all the Major Characters of Persona)
Also you don't *_HAVE_* to do my Gargantuan What if, but I would like it if you did...
Other than that giant What If I typed in, Amazing Video as always, Garrulous!
*_*Applauds_**
5:26 you stopped at marble? I stopped at green hill.
That feel when this was your first classic Sonic game.
Nintendo Master Race
PC very close second
On the topic about SADX Pc not having the game gear games
They do, it's just that the Steam port of the game blocks access TO the games. The PC Disk version runs them just fine and with a mod manager can be displayed in the other resolutions; although, it still plays the best in the 4:3 resolution it was made in.
Nice video and nice shirt!
I really want "Sonic Colors Ultimate" to be great. Cause I'm sick of seeing 2000's era Sonic fanboys completely trashing that game's reputation, but I wanna see this remaster be given the quality of life improvements it needs.
To be fair, it is the reason why Sonic Forces's bad writing exists
@@ChuckE.CheesesIllinois No it really isn't. Colors at least knew what it was and stuck with it. Forces meanwhile was trying to please everyone and ended up pleasing nobody. Colors wasn't a super story focused game so it didn't seem fair for me to be that critical of it's plot. Forces meanwhile was promising a big grand epic story, which is something the Sonic franchise REALLY needs to stop doing cause it almost always ends with embarrassing results.
@@supermariof0521 ok, fair enough, but i still can't excuse it for the writing direction, also don't really like the 2D sections
@@ChuckE.CheesesIllinois Not saying you have to like it. Though the reason I'm willing to excuse Color's writing is cause it was their first attempt at this meta style of writing. The problem is that they never improved on it in all the games following.
@@supermariof0521 ah makes sense, but i think this "meta" style fits boom more, but i think that's just me because i played Sonic Games through SEGA consoles (1-Adventure 2 Dreamcast)
9:27 lmao thanks for answering my concerns when I bought this yesterday on steam for 3 dollars. No widescreen in 2021 lmao
And then you have SA2 which has ups and downs in both versions. The Dreamcast port has better cutscenes but the GameCube port has a better multiplayer mode, a superior Chao Garden and even adds some small stages details.
Honestly, I wish SEGA would find a way to add Dreamcast Cutscenes to Battle but I'm not bothered too much. I didn't notice Crosseyed Amy when I played the PS3 version in PSNow. They probably fixed it. But *WHY* Did they color Amy's teeth red just to hide them
I remember hearing that Sonic Adventure DX actually got _jankier_ with each subsequent release
QOTD: Absolutely unfinished!
Sonic is more complex then Yoshi Island and GBA had hardware limitations.
Dude... the gba is more powerful then the snes. So much more powerful it can do yoshis island - a game that used the SUPER FX CHIP so no, its much more complex then sonic with all the sprite scaling and rotating
Ah yes. So complex that someone made a good version of Sonic 1 on GBA.
@@darkboy19O7 The Genesis and SNES were built different, sound limitations for GBA, also the screen is very small.
@@sethgob5591 It's not about power, it's about complexity and the Genesis is more complex to crack then the SNES kinda how the Saturn is very hard to emulate compared to the N64.
@@segaspice4062 th-cam.com/video/uzO4fUiebw8/w-d-xo.html
Take a look at this. Sonic 1 running on the GBA. But actually *good*. Also, Sonic 1 was ported to the SNES

5:55 and knuckles
Actually on the actual PC Version of SADX for Windows XP the Game Gear Games are included. It's only the Steam Version which doesn't have these.
I know this bc my girlfriend has the old PC Version. And no, she doesn't use mods.
Sonic Genesis is the most Cursed Sonic Game
i have a question about modding if you mod a game like mania in the switch version will this affect other games? like smash bros?
No. But no one is modding the switch version of Mania. Also modding your console might put you at risk of getting banned from online services.
