Yeah, Richard and Thorin already made their mind up so there’s no point trying to talk them down off of that. I think DOA came across very well, even though as you said, it’s one tough task trying to defend the state of OW and OWL.

I was as pessimistic as anyone about OWL until it hit me...Activisions ability to sell a slightly changed game to customers who already own it for 60$ Every year is some sort of accidental genius with how well it actually works. People literally pay full price for the same game over and over where it might even turn out to be horrible, but they do it like it’s a huge new anticipated release..THEN they rebuy all their madden and fifa cards spending who knows what each, just like they did the year before.
The main point that I want to highlight is this business model is accidentally genius with how it reinvigorates the entire CoD community and fanbase every year. This game development method will keep overwatch poppin with every new release they have. I imagine “OW3” will be released 3years from when OW2 is.
Instead of new game releases, Dota and League have patches that evolve the game into new versions of itself over time. But because of how “it’s just a patch” psychology works with gamers, new players aren’t coming out of the woodwork and trying these mobas for the first time strictly because of the patch as they are with CoD madden fifa etc full game releases. This is a massive deal especially with how bad Dota’s overall player base is deteriorating. Yes this is mainly because of how much more unforgiving DOTA is compared to LoL that is causing new players to never comeback.
Because of this the future of dota needs a massive roadmap change by Valve. The only way to save dota is, you guessed it, trick everyone into believing a “DOTA3” release is a real thing with all of your skins carrying over etc so people don’t have a real reason not to switch. The obvious ideal way to go about this is with a new or updated game engine, but assume that this isn’t happening and it’s just a big patch and improved UI that’s packaged into being an official release. The psychology of these games being fresh and new when released every year is the only way that some game franchises will survive.
OWL will crumble and collapse once the investors of owl franchises’ try to sell their OWL spot/brand and can’t...Blizzard will have to takeover the management of the team and continue to look for a buyer... ASSUME the news is out and every potential buyer in the world starts to view all OWL franchise teams as just a slow bleed of capital ontop of a massive fee.. because of this, the valuation of every spot within the league will decrease a substantial amount. This creates a cascading effect of low investor group confidence on the prospects of selling in the future. Logically this leads to another investment group noticing they can’t keep bleeding cash forcing them to desperately search for a buyer of their non desirable OWL spot. You get the picture.
This logical downfall of OWL can somewhat be prevented by getting rid of the fee to blizzard by atleast 80%. Ingame item sales are the holy grail of making the ecosystem of esports succeed. Rainbow6 is the only game dev in the world who works with and develops ingame items with teams and gives them a cut that is good enough to satisfy the owners which is a first. Ingame items using branding will also help promote league viewership and fandom. It’s fucking insane this isn’t the number one focus of every developer involved in franchise leagues, they are so greedy with giving teams any decent/fair cut that it’s not even a consideration. Without that they’re fucked. Media rights deals are scams and TH-cam twitch etc will not pay again. Blizzard most likely doesn’t give owl teams a meaningful fraction from that deal so they can sustain themselvez

Whoever hounded you about AoE 2 didn't expose it properly. TheViper is a larger than life player, and precisely the point of Hidden Cup is to recognize players from playstyle, something that does happen a lot, for example, in a first round series like 5 minutes in everyone knew it was Leireyyy vs Hera because their playstyles are that recognizable. That tournament had a 100k prize pool, so it wont get to WCS level but the scene supports 50ish pros which isn't bad for a grass roots scene.
And about TheViper, he doesnt win as much in the last year but even now everyone was focused into knowing which of the hidden heros he was. Also, the players send a guess about who they were playing. TheViper was the only one out of the 16 bracket players to correctly guess all the guys he was playing. He is so good sometimes he plays suboptimal on purpose to limit test

Hi, I'm the WC3 modder that used to go by meian. A friend of mine and I made an old WC3 mod called DotA Allstars that some people may or may not have heard of. I tried repeatedly to contact Blizzard to get in with them, especially once I heard they were going to make HotS. I'm sure no one has to guess how much interest I got. Zero, zip, zilch. So, I love the commentary towards the end by Thorin about Blizzard passing on having MOBAs coming straight from Blizzard. It's history is actually even dumber than he makes it sound.

Kind of shake my head at people talking about CEO pay like the corporate board (and the people who own the bulk of stock) negotiates these things based on merits, and that they "need" to pay these amounts out to get "good" CEOs. Totally not because they tend to be giant incestious nepotism cauldrons and pay largely revolve around them swapping money for pay raises themselves and further connections to get their friends and families on other corporate boards.

I gotta say them not bringing up the pressure that Valorant is pushing on OWL, especially with Monte so confident the viewership won't go down. People like to watch players from their culture and that they can connect with and with Western players being Siphoned by Valorant there is no way that those numbers are safe, players can easily begin to jump ship and try Valorant as many already have.

Overwatch and the league as a product right now is failing but the interest in the game universe goes far beyond current tangible metrics. Personally, everything about it seems antithetical to esports.
      - Location based teams
      - Blocking and fucking with endemics and endemic brands
      - developer artificially propping up a major scene and league while stunting grass roots tournaments and leagues

But they seem "more like *real* sports, this is great, esports getting legitimate" when really its not a real sports model but instead the bad model that american sports follows as a way to funnel money to the bought in owners and league at the cost of real competition.

@@Logical281 location based sports work when the viewing experience is based on location and when the pool of fans is much larger. People who are esports fans are far more spread out among the worlds population and asking for a density of them in multiple cities to be majority supporters of individual teams is unreasonable. Esports are more like world tours in terms of how they are able to produce enough in person viewers at each location. In a way its much closer to musicians who need to tour to locations over the course of the year in order to draw in people once or twice year from further out in order to fill those stadiums. And all of that doesnt even tak into account the average expendable income of the demographic that watch the most esports.

I stopped playing Overwatch a couple of years ago after years of playing heroes such as Dva, Junkrat, Ana, and later on Ashe. It got so unfun that I only played to collect all the skins for these characters. Blizzard patched the game only when it got to the point where player-count started to dip and the weekly hero ban showed that they gave up on balancing. I'm still trying to get the figures and other collectibles for these characters that I'm missing but other than that the game is dead to me.

Thorins Idea bout CEO wages is pretty smoothbrained. He is right about the contracts being the reason they are payed such stupid amounts of money, however the reason they get those contracts is mostly nepotism and other connections. There are more than enough just as qualified people who would do the job for a fraction of the money.
If you suck as a CEO you wont get replaced fast, this is not a job where the good ones end up. Cutting CEO costs even by extreme numbers like 75% will not result in you getting shitty CEOs if it is done in an entire field/area/nation.
