The Fifth Dimension were smooth as silk, and very underrated! The lady singing is Marilyn McCoo & the gentleman to her left is her Husband Billy Davis Jr. and together they had a big hit "U Don't Have To Be A Star". Peace!

The other lady in the group's name is Florence LaRue. I went to Jr and Sr High with her younger sister around the time that Up Up and Away and the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius and Stone Cold Picnic was out. They sang grown folks music whereas the Five Stair Steps sang teeny bopper music.I was around and like them both but totally different styles.

I remember a few months ago i requested you react to this group and try to figure out how to label them....if you could then you would be good cause white and black radio back then were confused at how to label them.....they were one of the biggest selling artists from the late 60s to early 70s and one of the greatest harmonizing group of all times....i see you noticed the harmonies
Interesting thing about group is everyone thought they were white until Ebony magazine put them on the cover....studio producers wanted the world to know they were black so they produced songs for them like "Stoned Soul Picnic", " One Less Bell To Answer", "Wedding Bell Blues"..... To me her voice is almost same tone as Sade but Marilynn sing with emotion and much more range.....btw....Motown almost had this group.....great reaction

Soul Train (and American Bandstand) almost always featured the artists lip-sync performances of their latest hits. The thinking was that the mostly teenage audience would not appreciate any variation from the sound of the record, which was usually all over pop & R&B radio at the time.

They started out with that kind of vibe because they covered some of their songs and used the Wrecking Crew as their band. But I think they began to pave their own lane and hone their own sound after a while. I feel they are more so the sister group to the Friends of Distinction, especially since some of the members from each group once all performed together and toured with Ray Charles.

They had a sound that reached across demographic boundaries, so they got play on pop & r&b stations, black & white audiences. Growin up, I used to think this had to be the saddest song ever, especially when she come back get back to that, ‘I just got, one less egg to fry’, I would be picturing that one lonely egg, sittin there, & it jus was like, mad sad to me. Now it’s hilarious! 🤣. There’s a whole lotta stuff worse than one egg, fo real! But my girl had to emphasize, like it was the height of devastation. Really?!! You were mixin up Five Stairsteps just cause of the 5. Their song was, ‘Ohh Child’, sampled by PAC for Keep Your Head Up.

Ah yes, the 5th Dimension delivered the full bodied harmonies w Marilyn McCoo and her hubby Billy Davis Jr (brother w the goatee) taking the lead vocals for the group. And for the record, almost ALL Soul Train performances were lip synched in the TV studio. The exception were bona bands like WAR, they were compact and could fit because the soul train set in reality is very small. I went to a taping back in the 80s, and I was surprised at the magic they create w camera angles, and lift cranes! So yeah when you see soul train performances you're actually hearing the studio recording. For actual live performances, catch artists on the 70s "Midnight Special". If you were on that lineup you had to bring your best game, LIVE! Good stuff...

Lip sync was common in those days and accepted. "Soul Train" plus many other contemporary music shows(there were many) did the same. It wasn't to hard figure that out even though the vocalists were good Lip syncers but when you drums and other instruments are playing and none are in sight, well.....What was hilarious was some shows like "Ed Sullivan" had bands Lip syncing and pretending to play their instruments. Sometime pretending to play their instruments they would look at each and start smirking because it was silly. Other times musicians had a disgusting look on their faces.
But "Soul Train" wasn't only the best musical/dance show of all time, it was an important show........I use to call it "Dance Scool in My Living Room".

What do you mean "middle class people" and what do you mean by "ghetto"?.... Do you realize how you sound?....music played on the radio then or now can be heard by EVERYONE....also you stereotype the black race when you associate the word ghetto with black....blacks as well as every other race range from dirt poor to filthy rich...btw....blacks as well as whites from all economical backgrounds loved the 5th Dimension which is the reason why they were one of the biggests selling artists when they were out and the fact that they were on Soul Train shows that not only " middle class" people loved them....DO BETTER

I get your comment. Try getting an African-American to admit that he or she likes Barry Manilow or Burt Bacharach; although the music is fantastic, chances are most aren't aware of who they (Bacharach, Manilow) are. Plus, Whitney Houston was booed at 1988 Soul Train Awards because black people thought that Whitney's songs were too white. I watched the "Whitney: Can I Be Me" documentary. It was devastating to see the effect that had on her. She was born in Newark, NJ. You can't get more "hood" than that.

@@martyemmons1859 .....i do hope we get away from that thinking....here in NYC a lot of African immigrants love country music....i could never figure that out....but people love what they grew up listening to....the person i responded i know meant no harm by what he said but the way he stated it sounded kinda odd
I watched a 2020 interview about a month ago with Marylnn and Billy....they explain how group formed and was originally was suppose to sign with Motown....the producer who brought them to Motown had a dispute with Motown and took group with them to another label....their harmonies were so on point that producers had them sing in the mode of the top white harmonizing groups at the time which were The Turtles, Mamas & Papas, Spanky & Gang....5th Dimension surpassed them all....only problem is most people thought they were white until Ebony magazine put them on the cover....then producers produced more soulful songs for them....after hearing they almost signed with Motown i wonder what they would have sounded like

@@TheFargo116, NYC? You know, there are some great musicians from NYC! Three of my favorites are: Ashford and Simpson, Odyssey and Cory Daye (Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band).

@@martyemmons1859 .....funny you mentioned Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band....i requested a few months ago that JJ react to them....they had a sound of their own that i havent seen anyone else duplicate....they fused 70s disco with 30s big band era to come up with their own unique sound....some of the greatest hiphop artists have sampled them including Wu Tang Clan....hope he reacts to this group

Well done noticing the Sixpack on the female backup singer. Very unusual for the sixties. Fitness just wasn't even talked about.

SIR---------The worsd you're looking for on this video is a ' Lip-synch " ---------which so many shows did. The performers are in synchronization with the original studio recording. -

Gotta admit that this is my first time hearing this song as well. I mean, I've heard snippets of it on TIME LIFE music commercials and just by going on those alone, where you only hear a line of the chorus, I thought the song was corny AF. Haha. However, after listening to the full version, the song is far from corny. In fact, I'm ready to open iTunes and download it. LMAO!!
