The long episodes don’t bother me at all. I can stop them at anytime and it gives me something I can look forward to coming back and watch. There’s no law saying you have to watch the entire episode at once.
You cannot beat "Common-Sense" and Taryl is a Fix for All!
I just about had a fricken heart attack. At 44:45, I was 'nodding off' a lil' bit, and Elkskins comes on there with his 'FIRE IT UP, FIRE IT UP !!", and scared the absolute crap out of me.
I’m so happy to hear that you’re going to continue making your TH-cam videos
You are a great teacher, Taryl !!
I so enjoy your videos.
Thank you.
Boy, if that was my engine I would’ve opted for the Taryl repair for sure! Same thing can happen to the expensive new replacement head and yer back in the same boat. Great job as always!
Again. Ted did a GREAT job. He's the back-bone of the team.
It's a great tip to keep the head fins clear. Every year I clear grass from my Krohler heads, without Taryl's advice from years ago I would have dropped guides in that motor.
The shrouds are a pain to remove, but worth it when I see what lurks in those passages.
Taryl I was watching your cat story man what heart breaking story,I never cared for cats ether but we ended up with a kitten from my wifes boss when, she found with out a mommy in a colorado blizzard, had him for 17 years when ended up with cancer, and we had to put him down. 3 days later a feral cat showed we had him for 7 years and we lost him to cancer, now we adopted 2 cats brothers.Anyway I we are glad things turned out for the best for you guys.I just started to watch your videos great job.say hi to your kittys from Tony&Barb from Colorado. 😊
I have a Lawn Boy Mower that I bought 50 years ago. I bought it in 1974 when I bought my first Home and still looks new because I washed it after every mow. It is a 2 stroke, but I like it because it is very light. The only thing I did is I replaced the spark plug. I do put premium gas in it. It runs great and starts on the first pull. Now at 68 I am glad I kept it.
I like your kind of story. Getting value out of your power equipment. Keep using the premium. Avoid ethanol. Fuel system problems with marine and small gas engines due to ethanol makes up most of the problems my mechanic friends deal with.
That's neat, I can remember cutting my Grandma's yard every summer with her 2 stroke Lawn Boy. Wish I still had it because it was light as heck.
I was surprised to see you guys on Svengoolie last night. You were great. Can't wait to see more little Johnny. Thanks Lanny.
You're welcome, from germany ... Guten Tag ;-)
I love the editing on this channel it gives these videos so much personality ontop of what Taryl is already giving
Love your videos tyral, also i love that you quoted, guys and gals, im glad you included both, THANK YOU SIR AS WELL AS YOUR RESPECT TO YOUR FOLLOWERS, TOP NOTCH YOU ARE AND YES YOUR TEETH ALSO TOP NOTCHED
I wonder how many gaskets have been put on without the backing paper removed from the sticky 🤔
All of them
You Sir are an Old School Master Mechanic ! I Really Enjoy your Videos ! Thank You for Shearing your Knowledge
Amazing how much damage one little flufster can do building a nest under the blower housing. Nice job on the repair.
"Probably the last one on Earth" - ya think they got any on Mars , or the Moon?
I have the 22hp version in my JD LA135. Every year, after leaf cleanup is over, I remove the fan shroud and blow everything out with compressed air. Then the tractor gets a bath and I jerk the deck off and install the snowblower. Every 200 hours I adjust the valves. I have inspected those guides the past two valve adjustments and so far, no movement. 830 hours on it so far and it still runs great. I also added drain and fill plugs to the Tuff Torq transaxle, so that gets changed every 100-200 hours with Mobil 1 synthetic 20w-50.
Well, someone's got to go first with the "good head" jokes 😃.
Taryl's one lucky guy! Breaks & Scrap'em always gives good head.
Who's next?
LOL..., "Love notes", Hands up, Black Hawk down moment! Cracks me up!
Taryl. Your a good teacher. You have teach. Me. A. Lot and I been working on small engine since jr.high and I 64 be 65 on my birthday . And I worked on pumps compressor tools and all kinds of other stuff thur the years.
Lol it's always informational and entertaining. 👍
We had a host at the first place I worked at. I was a cook at the local restaurant when I was a kid. My mom worked there and got me the job. There was always cup flying off the drying rack and breaking. On night I went down stairs to fill the ice bucket. I set the scope in the top of the machine and as I went up the stairs it fell off and was laying west off from the machine in the floor. I told the little girl I worked with that I’m not going back down there. She said that she was certainly not going down there. The building was built before the civil war in the little town in perryville ky, might of heard of the battle of perryville from history class. We called him Sam.
A+ Taryl! Always great humor and knowledge on your channel(s).
Boy Taryl you are awesome at small engine repair and fabrication. I just don't understand why you don't have a digital caliper to measure the push rods instead of a drill gauge. And wow it's hard to believe your Dewalt impact has a Ni-Cad battery. How old is that thing? Great video though! I really enjoy the knowledge you share with us. Keep up the great work
Fluffy got up in behind the dashboard of my mower (10 year old Sears Craftsman) and chewed up a bunch of wires connected to the starter switch. Now I start it with a knife switch, and the headlight switch opens and closes the fuel cutoff valve.
I ordered a replacement starter wiring harness from Sears last June. "They" said it was on backorder and I would have it by September. That November I received a headlight wiring harness with a broken bulb. Pretty sure the "customer service agent" I chatted with online was a bot.
Sears died years ago. Now it's just an AI that tricks people into sending it money.
Just bought a headlight harness on ebay , $8.99. 1000s sold. Came in 3 days.
The fricken A.I. bots are taking over. I dropped by the local McDonalds for a quick snack, drove up to the speaker. The person on the speaker sounded kinda weird as I gave him my order. Got to the pickup window....no one in the order booth, I was talking to a damned computer the whole time. What the hell is this world coming to ?????
Yea,I save old harnesses for just such an occasion along with the switches, and model numbers
Great videos, you guys have saved this old man lots of money. Thank all of you for the help.
Would love to see a series on various mower decks. belt layout/replacement and reinstallation. Some of these MTD are a nightmare! Same with toro
Fluffy the rat strikes back
Awesome video God Bless you and your family Amen
Taryl, I just saw your guest appearance on Svengoolie last weekend!!!! Amazing!
I know someone who has a serious fluffy infestation here in the UK. The fluffy's have eaten the soy based wiring in his car, his Honda ride on mower and then because they were even more hungry they decided to eat the fuel line on his John Deere X series diesel ride on mower. Apparently, they are attracted to the smell of the bio fuel part of the diesel.
I just had this happen. I usually check everything good in the spring but had some crap going on so just jumped on and started mowing. The next week had more time and wabam! Had a big mouse nest over the right jug! Its a 2007 crapsman 22hp intek. I have taken good care of it. Still doesnt burn any oil, origional nikki six carb have never had a problem with it. Just got lucky it was still somewhat cool out so it didnt overheat.
Always watched your videos. Learn something new and as always entertain with the show .... Keep Them Coming 😊
Another great video. Good dinner tonight Taryl
That should be a lifetime repair on that scrapper. Nice work 👍👍
Hello from Germany, thank's for greeting! Guten Tag (at daytime), or Guten Morgen (good morning), Guten Abend (evening time) Gute Nacht (good night, but more used before going to sleep)
Pro parts direct is really a pretty good place for stuff like this, haven't disappointed me yet.
Thanks for the video, guys. Fire that goodin tight sumbeach up!
OMG I keep hearing Rick Moranis and I was waiting for Taryl to say "Ok who brought the rodent's nest?" 😂😂😂😂....thank you guys for the vids
...Taryl talking about "cheap" lawn mower parts,etc..... in my area i think there are no more lawn/garden repair shops(mom/pop)...gone. thankfully there is youtube channels like Taryl's help us grass rats out...
Same here. People just throw away mowers when they have an issue, and those that don't, have gardeners.
That's why I'm opening up a shop in my area
The nose whistle really makes the video😂.
Another great video tyral and the boys we love ya loads from good old England ❤😊
Thanks for the video Taryl.
There you go! Take the air filter off, start the engine and use the engine to suck the nest right on in. Great job!
Yeah, I noticed that too.
I love your videos, Taryl. Many greetings from Germany!!
I had a 24 or 25 hp drop all 4 push rods at the same time !!!!! I had to order new heads ( this was after the pandemic ) and waited 11 months for them !!!! . I think all of us shops should get a petition to have Briggs and Stratton make replacement valve guides for these . It makes no sense to have pushed in guides, but no replacements !😮
Hey Taryl the most expensive damage I saw caused by rodents was when the musk rats got up the exhaust of one of lake Champlain transportation's dinner cruise boat the engineers tried to get rid of them the nice way but they kept coming back.. The solution to the problem was making them sleep with starting fluid//the damages they did I am sure you can imagine...THERES your dinner!!!!
Thank you for sharing.👍
You're right Taryl, I have a riding mower with an 18.5 hp Intek Break's & Scrap'em engine in it, and every time I finish mowing, I use my Stilch leaf blower and make sure the whole engine, mower and cooling fins are blown off. I also change the oil and oil filter every other year, and the mower is a cheap one from 2017, and still runs strong, and good compression etc. I changed the oil and filter on it when it was new after about the first 10-15 hours of use, then the next season, but now it seems to be well broken in and the oil still looks clean after 2 years of use so I just change the oil every other year.
Great video. Set screw trick is new to me.
After the ghost incident you said, I need a "pair of needle nose", but it sounded like "Paranormal knows"
Ive tuned up filthy machines in the spring, washed off enough dirt, they didn't recognize that it was their machine
Thank you Taryl!
1 thing I learned working at a small engine dealer is that you should always make sure you mower and lawn equipment is put in sealed shed, garage, or storage garage. Costs you much less in the long run. No fluffy. Fluffy stays outside.
I just nabbed some Taryl apparel♥♥♥ Love the Mower Medic Tees♥
My opinion, is the consumer buys the least expensive products they can find and if companies want to sell their products. They have to cheapen them up to compete with the least expensive ones. Unfortunately, this means the the products are becoming throw away products. I'd rather pay a little more and get a better product, but 30 years ago when I was young. I ether bought the cheap stuff or I didn't buy anything. I think there are a lot of people in that situation now.
Maybe I am rare or obsessed, but every time I finish mowing the lawn I hose down everything around the engine and wheels and axels
Taryl and friends, Saw you and Slippers on TV last night. Pretty scary.
Actually there was more Slippers than Taryl. Man oh Man!
Yes i did buy merch, love it by the way! Just did a JD 210 with an exhaust glowing red cuz fluffy made a nest in the blower housing!
Thank you for another great video
Thank you Mr taral.
Great job teral
GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your hair is looking especially lovely tonight
I bet they shifted that pushrod diameter to metric from 3/16 to 4 or 4.5 mm. Unrelated, a rabbit got under the hood of my car one winter and ate a huge amount of the wiring harness. That was fun. yeah.
good reminder I have a 1996 Dual Cylinder B&S engine I need to check the cooling fins on, that is the best running Engine
We had a cat that could pick up a gopher and chuck him up against the wall with those mouser paws. A blue point son of a Tonkinese.
Darn good cat. Captain Bob.
He never told us his real name. But mice feared to tread.
When he had no mice, he reached in the feed bag and ate cat food out of his paw.
Good kitty.
Hated moving.
I just replaced a head on a kohler courage because of fluffy. On that engine the valve seat dropped.
Taryl I really agree with you 100% about customers that nag you everyday but they just cant understand about the unavailable part or if its back ordered.
I pulled out an old mower the deck rotted off from the junk pile a while back and rode it around and smoke started pouring out of the motor. mouse nest made of shredded leaves. I check my working mower every spring for it but didnt think about that one. doh. it was fine after I cleaned it.
It is good practice if you have a leaf blower to blow the cylinder cooling fins thoroughly after every use. It is also a good idea to blow the entire machine off after every use. Clean machines work better than those that are clogged with lots of debris. Just like a clean vehicle drives better than a dirty one. I know that is really not true, but it just feels that way, same with a clean grass cutting machine. One thing I can't stand is a dirty vehicle or a piece of lawn equipment. Using a leave blower instead of a power washer when cleaning on a regular basis is the best option. Bearings and water don't do well together. I only power wash my lawn equipment at the end of each season before putting them in storage for the winter, and after cleaning I grease and lube every moving part. If whoever brought that machine in for Taryl to work one would have blown out the cooling fins on a regular basis, he would not be paying Taryl to replace the head. Enjoyed the video, Taryl. Always look forward with a cup of freshly brewed cup of coffee to set down and watch your Sunday videos.
If it isn’t too time consuming I use a little pressure scrubber with a turbo nozzle and BLAST the fins until they are squeaky clean
Yup, that's exactly what I do, every time I mow, before I put the mower away. Mine has a cheap Intek Break's & Scrap'em engine too, but it's only 18.5 horse not 21 like the one in this video. Gotta keep up the maintenance on those, and so far the one I have is going on it's 8th year now, and no problems so far.
that happened to my push rod a few years back so i had to shorten my stroke
TMI bro
That's what she said!
Your rodent laugh sound always makes me smile
It's no wonder that mice are the lords of the universe (Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy).
Mouse builds nest on cooling fins.
Blocked cooling fins cause the cylinder to over head messing up the valve guides.
Engine won't run.
Owner parks mower because it costs too much to repair.
Mouse lives in it's home undisturbed after the heat does the damage.
"Happy mouse, happy house, don't be dicks, don't get it fixed"
I had serious problems with mice for a few years in my garage. They were all over the place, building nests all over the place. Turns out they were feasting on the grass patching seed I had stored in a plastic bag buried under a shelf. Threw that out. But the worst problem was , I got my Summer car out for the year and it didn't run right. Checking around, I took off the air cleaner and found it was packed with a mouse nest. Got all that out, replaced the air filter, and it ran good again.
You have so much info to share. Drop the costumes and skits and do a clean instructional video.
yeah I remember that video with that pushrod that zipped into the Oil sump
I want one of those fancy shirts. I will look like a professional just like Taryl!
Had the same thing happened to a 27000 bass boat the mice are up all the wiring
" Beat it with a hammer " , it's one of my favorite terms . 😅
I always put a dab of paint on the cables so I put them back on in the right place
I have an opposed twin 18hp.. Fluffy didn't get me, but I did use it a few times without the hood on it, in tall weeds.. and of course the entire shroud filled up with weeds and I cooked the rings so bad that it's hard to start and has extreme blowby now. :( ......... I have another mower, but I think I'll still give this engine an overhaul and see if I can just throw some rings on it.. hopefully
I have done plenty of those head's when I worked as a mower mechanic about 7 years ago
I like this video.
I alway just drove the guide back in and staked it around the top. A new head is the best fix though.
@ 9:52
That's exactly how the pop sounds when I pull the tail off a cosplay girl.
I enjoy mystery movies and mower repair videos, both involve diagnostic forensics...following the evidence. Teryl is the Sherloc Holms of lawn equipment repair....Al Scott
BRAKES AND SCRAP 'EM OH, YES
BREAKS* Brakes are what you use to stop with. 🤭 I've had great luck with Briggs engines however.........
You hit the big time. Saw you on Svengooli. 😂
Great 👍
Love notes LOL
Those v twin engines are the best I have 800 hrs on mine and still going strong 💪
Foreigner : head games i can't take it anymore
I had one of those engines repaired under warranty 20 years ago by a new defunct out fit called mower MD and they cross treaded the left Intake bolt ! Found this years later when I had to pull it to clean out the carbertater the left jet got plugged with some dirt . Drill and Helicoil it funny I applied to work for them a year or two before I had that unit worked on by them and they turned me down not citing enough experience!
Where Taryl bent the engine tin away from that engine,I removed my engine instead. Briggs had a flange bolt installed there thats impossible to remove. Fluffy had a nedt built in mine the size if a half loaf of bread . So I put s stud in the engine block so the tin could be removed .Fluffy does some damage, but fortunately this engine was not run and overheated.
Rodent wasted 2 hours of my time with my 13 year old Craftsman power washer which has a Briggs lawn mower engine. I had just used the power washer a week ago and it started up on 1-2 pulls as usual. I pulled it out and it started on 1 pull, but it was running extremely poorly, with chugging, almost like misfiring. I check compression, then I checked the spark, then I pulled the carb to clean it. Reassembled and same thing. Then I noticed all these grass clippings under the heavy duty metal air shroud.....mouse had crammed all sorts of clippings in the shroud and caused blockage between the ignition coil and fly wheel. Cleaned that out and it started right up. Wasted so much time.
Anytime i replaced a head gasket or adjust valves I never put sealant back on. I just a regular valve cover gasket and never had any leaks
Fine for personal stuff, but being paid for a repair job, he needs to guarantee the work to avoid a comeback.
