One of the things I WISH I did when I was younger was focus on the key books first instead of buying the cheaper multiple issues. I remember passing on ASM #50 and #121, and #129 back in the early 1980s because those books at that point were $20+, and the regular issues were roughly a dollar each. To me, getting twenty books for $20 was a better value than buying ONE book for $20. If you can find a large straight run for dirt cheap (my rule is cover price or less), then go for it, but if sitting next to that large lot is a key, then GET the key.
This is great advise. I have over 3800 comics but right now I am concentrating on Captain America but will always pick up certain comics like ‘The Maxx’ or Avengers #225. I do have a few that I can practice pressing on.
Great post Jim… I’ve built a collection from 20k cost in a 5yr span and is worth now over 200k it can be done but it has to be done smart and patently takes work and hustling. This is mind you when prices of books 10/12yrs ago were far less then today.
Have to say, as a long time collector I think prices today are outta whack - great for those making money but the old timers like me are being crazy with their cash.
I'm focusing on Neal Adams currently.
Me too.
That’s very cool. Lots of awesome stuff out there. He was so cool a guy as well. Was honored to meet him a couple of times.
Jim. You’re a positive force for the comic book hobby. Thx for your videos!
