    Thanks for explaining this - new to collecting (trying to continue my son's collection after he passed away) and I get overwhelmed and confused by some of the terminology. Will be watching more of your videos. To your point in this video: Saturday I was in a small shop that had a Batman Vol. 3 variant that was different than I had ever seen. I bought one (it was only $10) and the checkout guy said "take care of this - it's a "special" cover our store got for ordering certain numbers of DC comics and it's particular to this store". I chuckled because, I dont know if he was unaware of it or not, but there were about 15 of them in one of the long boxes tucked under the regular bins . My son always got the variants because he liked the artwork. That's what I think I will do as well.

      Dont waste your money, get copperage or older if you want consistent increase in value. these variants just increase the print run of the same story. No one will care in 20 years hence you lose your money. buy older comics like copperage or older.

      Alot of times the cover artist will have prints of em on their online store and it will be signed. You could also attend a con where the cover artist will be and they usually have their cover art in large print form. They will sign it.

    I would say that in 20 years there will likely still be a lot of 9.6-9.8 regular covers simply because now days most comics are going straight into bags with boards (with many into mylar products.) I guarantee there are thousands upon thousands of ungraded 9.8 modern books sitting in long boxes all across this country. Hell, I am sure I have some of them in my dark, dry basement as I type this. But I think you are right on point regarding the fallacy of these "rare" variants. Great video.

    Like you say man- time will tell! Back in 2008 or 2009 I had a comic book store across from my dorm at college, and I was buying some spawn and indies back then but passed up on the 174 and 175 first appearance of gunslinger spawn because I thought it looked lame, little did I know they’d jump in value so much. If a comic speaks to me I’ll probably pick it up, whether it’s the main cover or alternate or ratio variant. Keep up the great vids! One of the best comics channels on all of TH-cam bro!

      Yet many of the hype men on the internet refuse to accept the similarities.
      It's not quite the same, the LCS has a little more safety because of business practices (charging a premium for the ratio variants to cover some of the inventory costs), but they are far more vulnerable at the same time.

    Great video. Something I have always wondered (and maybe a topic for another video) is whether there is some increased value in a comic that comes back a high-grade slab after several years of being stored raw versus the same comic being immediately graded high. For instance, 2 identical comics bought in 2000. One sent into CGC in 2000 and comes back 9.8. and the second comic being sent in 2021 and also comes back 9.8. Perception that the second one survived 21 years "in the wild" and still achieved that grade. Thanks!

    Very true a lot of what you said. I think if you're collecting these thinking they're going to put your kids through college, you might be sadly mistaken (unless you have the rare Ultimate Fallout 4 cover).....a lot of these just aren't as rare as people think, and like you said, if everyone is getting them slabbed....how rare are they going to end up? There's a few 1:25 covers I wouldn't mind having, but overall, I collect the books I want...and if I can get the cover I want (be it the regular, the variant, or the rarer variant) then I will try and get it. But overall, if I can get a cover I like of a book I want, then that's fine. If it isn't super rare, don't mind that either. If I want rarer, I will just go back and buy older books (which is what I've been doing, because I just enjoy a lot of the older books) and just get whatever I can from the newer books (and the companies are just doing this to create an air of rarity so it becomes "collectible" because it's the same book, but the cover is tougher to find....knowing people will jump on it).....I think, like you said, years from now will tell us where this all ends up.

Way too many. If the cover Z variant is a better cover with better art, they should’ve just made that the main cover!!!

    Myself I go for the cover that I think is cool.I would never buy a 1:25 or a 1:50 just because it's a ratio variant.I buy it for the artwork I've passed up alot of variants because the artwork on the regular cover was better.Or I'll buy a variant and a regular cover to read.Unless I think the regular cover is cool I might buy 2 of them one to read one to put away and not touch so I can get it graded in the future.I got out of collecting for a while just got back into it a few years ago.When I first started again the variants and the slabs was a little confusing to me at first.Back when I was collecting ratio variants weren't around.

Everyone can find a cover they can be happy with... how is that wrong? And if you like more than 1 cover you can purchase multiple covers if you feel like it.... I think it's great... I am coming from the world of sports cards and returning to comics a little bit. In sports cards, they do serially numbered parallels in some sets. These can be 1 of 5, 10, 25, 99 and so on into the 1000s. Worth noting this is "one OF" not "one IN"....Anyway. In the sports card culture, many times the parallels can be less valuable than the base card for rookies (as an example) because a rookie card has rules to be in a set, and the parallels are just adaptations of the base. Sometimes there are more parallels printed than "base" rookies (Upper Desk Synergy, for example). The value of the "rare" parallels is only realized for superstar rookies and usually only when the card is numbered so the print run is known.
    Variants aren't new to comics - I remember them from the early 90s in my first round with comic collecting, but I really think that it's human nature to assume the "A" covers will be the authoritative copy. It took a long time for sports collectors to consider a parallel card a "Rookie Year" card instead of a proper "rookie card". I think there is a chance comic books will circle around the same way in that the authoritative copy will be the A copy, and the B copy will be for artist collectors, completists, and other subsets of collectors.
    I really like this topic and as far as collectibles go it took me a long time to accept that a numbered parallels may be more rare than the base normal rookie card, but after accepting it, I see the wisdom in it - because it's the "real" set, not some gimmick fad. It *IS* the one that will be wanted in 100 years by most people. I feel like there is a good chance that happens to comics too. When the trees are all cut down and comics are printed on bamboo paper, it may even be looked back at as a time of industry excess. Who knows?

    Have you ever heard of print count? The reason why the 1:25s get graded more often is because there is a significant lower print count and are worth more than the Cover A. If the price spikes for the Cover A, theoretically there will be 25x more copies that can be sent to CGC and considerably eclipse the 1:25s graded count and further increase the price of the 1:25.

    • @MintHunterComics
      @MintHunterComics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mentioned in the video that there obviously more main covers but the myth of 1:25 being 25 less has been debunked, its NOT the print count its a distrubtion count to LCSs but it doesn't apply because everyone just buys it online in mass quantities without even buying the reg cover

    • @angiehakopian850
      @angiehakopian850 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MintHunterComics in order to get a 1:25 an online retailer is still purchasing 25 copies to get 1 of the ratio. Is your assumption that someone can purchase a 1:25 online and the retailer is not purchasing 25 copies?
      My LCS sold 5 of the 1:1000 brzrkr and purchased 5000 copies. Just because someone purchased only the 1:1000 doesn’t mean my LCS didn’t purchase 1000 copies.
      Take your Batman 96, first appearance of clown hunter for example. The Cover A sells for approx $55 and the 1:25 sells for approx $200. This is the reason why so many more 1:25 are slabbed. Even though there are less Cover A’s slabbed, the lower print run of the 1:25 makes it more valuable.

    I don't collect things that I don't like and I have a philosophical problem with variants. For one, I've never liked the idea that a cover artist leads to more sales. The artist of the interior did 99% of the work -- does the comic itself not matter? Also, I dislike blatant cash grabs, especially when they don't benefit both sides. Publishers create variants, because speculator-collectors will buy multiple books. However, more books being sold isn't actually beneficial to collectors as a whole.
    That being said, we're all adults, have different opinions, and I actually bought a Batman 92 Jimenez variant, because that's the first instance of Punchline on a cover, which adds to the book.
    And thanks for the video, because it's an interesting discussion no matter what side you're on.

  • @danielmitchel31310

    You're using DC only as a case. And what do you mean go straight to the source to buy these? Stores still have to purchase 25 copies to get 1 of each of these 1:25. The problem with Store Exclusives nowadays is it creates WAY more Ratio Incentives than there used to be. Most stores wouldn't even order 10/25/50 copies to qualify for these Incentives, but a store that does a Trade Dress & Virgin through Marvel & DC has to order 3K of the A Cover (usually Trade) and then 1K of the B Cover (usually the Virgin of the A Cover). That qualifies a store to get FOUR HUNDRED 1:10, 160 1:25, 80 1:50, AND 40 1:100 Incentives. Hence, making there much more Ratio Incentives than there used to be. That's why Hulk #6 (1st Titan) in the latest Donny Cates series did not pan out like people wanted / hoped it to be. The 1:500 is the one that would be the best to get... but stores still want so much for it. The 1:200 Maleev Incentive was selling for $200+ bucks pre-sale. Now you can find it for $150 all day. Just my 2 cents. I love connecting Ratio Incentive Variants. I got out of collecting Exclusives for the most part and now go for Ratios. Higher Ratio Incentives are my favorite. I have quite a few 1:500 Signed CGC SS Slabs.

    I'm just getting back into comics after like 4 decades away from them and I can't believe all the variants. It was kind of annoying but then yeah, I just collected what I wanted. Infinite Frontier books - I thought this is a good time to jump in with all the different characters getting storyline upgrades. Then I found variants with minimum words on the cover and found I liked them. So I got both, the regular and that one.....I thought, "I'm going to collect them all" and suddenly realized, I didn't want them all. Some of the stories aren't all that good, some of the art work doesn't really appeal to me and I suddenly realized, I need to just have fun, collect what I want and stop worrying about missing something. But I must have some completionist gene in me because I get FOMO from time to time. Oh well - maybe when i win the lottery I'll worry about it.
