Can The HX One REPLACE The Pedals on My Pedalboard?

I re-created my pedals in the Line 6 HX One and I'm SHOCKED... I'm shocked because after years of spending countless hours dialing in the sweet spot in my pedalboard rig, I was able to, in a matter of hours get extremely similar tones with the HX One. You have to take a listen for yourself.
In this video, I'm peeling back the curtain on how I was able to re-create my go-to pedals: Deep Six, Bender Fuzz, Belle Starr, Moonshine, Mobius, Timeline, and BigSky, all inside of the HX One. First, I'll take you through the process of dialing in compression, fuzz, and overdrive fx I used. Finally, we'll deep dive into re-creating the un-recreatable: Strymon Mobius, Timeline, and BigSky. In truth, the Helix ecosystem's modulation, delay, and reverb FX are really really solid. But I'll let you decided if they can hold up to the Strymon staples we all love.
It looks like you'll be able to downsize your pedalboard without downsizing your tone! Or I guess you could keep your massive pedalboard, replace a pedal or two with the HX One and then add in new pedals where you removed some. Either way, I found the HX One to be impressive, and an excellent tool for those looking to get a ton of guitar tones in a small package.

Digital has come a long way! There are SO many awesome pedals that do it all... maybe I need to make a mini pedalboard after all...
Presets + Links to the HX One in the description-
One of the best tone comparison videos I‘ve ever seen 👍🏻
THX for sharing it and all the effort it took 🙏🏻
Thanks so much!! I appreciate the kind words! :)
Been using the Helix for years, the Line6 stuff is so good. Great video!
Thanks so much!! Appreciate it!
I've been using an HX Stomp for well over 3 years, and it's amazing. The Effects are incredible, and you've done a great job exploring and dialing them in the HX One! 👍
That's awesome!! Thanks so much!
Great demo, man! The HX One is definitely an impressive little unit. I can also see why Strymon pedals are legend!
Thanks man! Agreed! Both sound fantastic-
I have the HX One and it's awesome. I was looking at the Walrus Audio M1, but this came out and it's great. I use the ballistic fuzz a lot.
Both awesome options!! Glad you’re liking the HX One!
Fun video. As a long time helix user, who just bought an fm9, my biggest sticking points with the helix were the amp sounds and the reverbs (not that there is anything wrong with them, they just didn't quite sit right to my ears. I used to have a big sky, and the cloud is my jam, and the helix doesn't do cloud). the drives, delays, modulation, compression, etc, are as good as anything out there. The hx stomp can replace half a pedalboard.
Thanks Nick! For sure- I haven't used a stomp or Helix so I can't speak to the amp thing, but I've heard similar critiques to what you're saying. Pretty cool devices!
Nice concept
Thank you!!
Phenomenal demo! Next level! My difficulty with digital multi-effects units has always been that they require a LOT of tweaking to get the sound to within 99% of what I'm after, whereas I can arrive there more quickly with analog pedals and get to the 100% mark. That said, you got these sounds REALLY close to their counterparts and didn't seem to take forever to get there.
Thank you so much!! There's definitely a learning curve to the multi-fx boxes- It took me a while to get a feel for them, but then something just clicked and now programming changes is actually quite a bit quicker for me, and practical. I can't see myself turning knobs in the middle of a set, let alone remember where to turn them to for each song haha! I found the HX One to be fairly intuitive too! Most of the parameters are pretty straight forward which helps-
@@JustinMuncy That's so cool! Thanks for the info and the great video. (Subscribed.)
I guess the main reason I sold most of my pedals and bought an HX keeping only my very favorites is that every time I gigged there would always be something in the signal path that would get messed up. When you have 13 pedals connected in series this bound to happen. Thanks for showing you can get really close with an HX.
Thanks so much! I know what you mean- I've had a cable go down in the middle of a set many a time. Definitely not the most fun thing to happen when you're playing, but it almost feels like a right of passage in a way lol-
Impressive how close you managed to match so many top tier pedals. That Belle Star though had some special sparkle that the HX One didn't quite do.
Thanks so much!! I think there’s something a little creamier in the mid range on the Belle Starr. It has a really particular voicing for sure-
@@JustinMuncyWhich drive were you using to approximate that one?
You need to maxed out the Damping in hx one very last demo of big reverb to get brighter reverb close to big sky
Hey Justin! Could you post what algorithms you used for the A/B tests against the other pedals? I’ve been trying to get a good fuzz tone on my HX one and yours sounded soo good!
Hi, for my ear it sounded like you have overall a little bit less volume on Hx one, which is made some audible difference at the midrange of every preset that you made and made the sound less rich than the pedals
While I've been a Helix user for a while I didn't expect it would be so close to some of those, especially the fuzz where the digital tends to fail. Good work there, even if maybe the HX FX would suit you more as a live pedalboard replacement, rather than the HX One which is more of a "jack of all trades" pedalboard addition in case you need that one odd effect every once in a while
Thank you!! :)
Can line6 find it’s way into my board? No :)
Are you the kid from Terminator 2?
HA! I am not John Connor-
@JustinMuncy, that's exactly what John Conor would say.
@@RapturesDelight I've never seen the movie so I wouldn't know- hahaha
hi, thanks for your videos. After testing so many different options, what do you prefer for playing live? the neural quad cortex or your pedalboard with the ACS1 as an amp simulator? did you try the dream 65 from uad? thanks
Thanks for checking them out! If it’s for live use, the Quad Cortex! I’m not sure if you’ve seen my videos “I re-created my Pedalboard in the Quad Cortex” and “I built a Worship Pedalboard in the Quad Cortex” but once I made those rigs, the difference between using my pedalboard and amp vs the Quad Cortex was so small. Since I just use the QC by itself, I don’t have to deal with patch cables going down or my board getting destroyed from the travel. Hard to beat the convenience of the QC. And, I’m happier with my amp sounds in the QC than the ACS1 personally. Though, I do think the ACS1 is great! I haven’t used any of the UAD pedals, but I’m sure they’re fantastic. If I was going the amp pedal route, I’d be most interested in the Tonex One simply for the form factor, and being able to capture my own amps into it is a plus for me!
Mobius Vibrato is compared with retro reel in video? Thanks! :)
Exactly!
For delay, i'm curious why you didn't go with Glitz on HX one for comparison on reverb since it is basically based on bigsky?
I think you mean reverb? I did use the Glitz-
Yes, I first wrote delay and later reverb thinking about reverb the whole time. 😂
Great video by the way.
The deputy is a great fit for the hx one
Cool!!

Preston Pedals is the company
It sounds great but I don’t understand how the company who launched the hx stomp the most functional pedal ever dropped this unit with such limited usability. Hopefully it gets upgraded to do amps.
2:23 ! 10 fins
That’s my Noah Fickel impression…
ok so next video shiw how much you sold ALL your other useless pedals for. Also you need not buy or ahem... recieve any other more pedals ever.
tf you mean useless pedals? it’s dumb to have one pedal that does effects digitally
Digital will never sound the same. Digital sounds flat with much less complexity to the drive and fuzz. The pedal board has sweed harmonics.
I know a lot of touring bads and churches I've been to use the Kempers, and even those are lacking. But for touring bands with fly cases or churches that need low stage volume they make more sense.
You want to compare that to good analogue pedals? Really? LoL
Где ты тут аналоговые педали увидел?
