I have been attacked and severely bitten by an unleashed dog while walking through a public park and the dog’s owner did nothing to stop it. I have every bit of sympathy for you.
@@ruthaisling always look on the bright side, if you can rather a bruise than plastic surgery ...give thanks to God, he listens to any who will ask for his help, and gives wisdom to any who ask
It is unfortunate that this should happen anywhere, thankfully it is not normal as most pet owners are very responsible. You will always find those twits who do not consider others.
Here in France, dog owners are completely liable for the damage they do. Consider contacting an officer at the nearest gendarmerie. They can make the owner have the dog quarantined, tested, and the owner fined. I’m so very sorry you’ve had such troubles. I love your videos!
I agree the situation needs dealt with. That dogs a liability to children. Be careful going through Newcastle, they bite too 😂. I once b was attacked by a German Shepard whilst cycling on the Union canal towpath. I ended up in the canal ☹️
Just seeing this now and I 100% agreed with the decision you made to go home. You need to destress and rest. I too have been bitten 3 times by different dogs and don’t like to see them off leash. Take care and best wishes.
Just found your channel. I am so sorry all those things happened to you, especially the dog bite. Don't blame you for going back home, either. Enough is enough. Thank you for sharing all of what happened. You are very brave. Take care and heal and rest up.
In Albufeira, my Wife and I were attacked by a pack of around half a dozen dogs. The locals just shut their doors! The Police didn't want to know either, luckily we weren't injured but it was very frightening.
As the owner of a German shepherd mix I am horrified by your experience and the fact that a person has taken this dog to such a public place without having any control of its behavior. That is so so scary and horribly irresponsible for literally everyone involved; and they remained parked next to you afterwards, which blows my mind! I can’t even comprehend that. Safe travels home to recharge and heal and sending you so much peace and love. I’m so sorry this happened to you; you’re such a gentle, kind, generous person.
So sorry to hear that happened to you Ruth. You really should have reported that attack to the police. In the USA, dog owners get sued in court for such things.
Oh, you have given me goosebumps hearing of getting attacked by the dog. My husband was attacked while I was right next to him......... no apologies or regrets from owners. They wouldn't give me their names so I had to wait until they approached their car so I could get the plate numbers and have the police track them down. It was VERY frightening and it makes my heart ache for you. Carry on and thank you for sharing your trouble - I wish you all the best and thank you for the adventures!
My husband was on his bike when an Alsatian bite him on the thigh, it was a scary moment, hope your feeling better, love your videos, my Great Grandfather is on the Menin Gate, hope to go and see it , take care ❤xxx
That's not funny, love. You should've been free to enjoy France/Belgium without risking your health. Glad you didn't require a rabies shot. (No, that's not to protect you from an involuntary need to recite poems in an Ayrshire twang). Rabies is very serious. That said, I hope that you'll excuse my saying "You're a gutsy Lady" and I do hope you can return soon to enjoy adventures in Europe.
Dogs: As a wee lad I delivered newspapers to homes every day over an extensive area and had much experience with aggressive dogs. 1) Stand your ground as running sparks their instincts to attack as a pack-animal; 2) When standing during a charging dog attack, reach down to mimic picking up a stick or rock (of course, only if they are far enough away to safely bend over) and raise your hand above your head threateningly, this usually will cause them to stop immediately to reevaluate you as prey and whether you will now harm them (with a non-existent stick or rock) if they get closer, they may circle or follow you at this point but it will give you a chance to get to a safer position or the time to take off a knapsack to use as a shield. Best.
🌸 thank you so much for this tip A few times I’ve encountered dogs and they were sneering and coming towards me but each time someone bigger showed up and dog backed off. Now I know how to stand my ground when no one is around 😊
When I was a child I was invited into some children's house. They had a dog. It ran at me barking. I turned to run and it bit me in the back of my leg. When I was grown some dogs were circling me and I kept turning so they couldn't get behind me. I learned not to run. I stood my ground and raised my hand like I was going to hit them. I also raised my voice at them. They finally gave up.
@@carollewis3912 Ultimately it is the owners that are at fault for not taking responsibility for their pets and 'socializing' them properly. Aggressive dogs ARE scary.
So sorry to hear of all your issues you had in your trip to France Ruth, you have certainly been through it. Very concerned to hear of the attack on you by a dog how frightening, your footage of you after the attack was really upsetting, you had to cope with this all on your own, can’t believe how the owner did not take responsibility for it. Not surprised you are very wary of dogs hearing of you past experiences I absolutely loved your Vlogs of the War grave sites and memorials, very emotional and beautifully put together .Thank You for sharing this Vlog which meant you had to go through all those challenging issues again in your mind.
Truly sorry that you've had such a rough trip. Your videos about the memorials were very meaningful to me. I'm not ashamed to say that tears were shed while watching them. It's too easy to forget all the lives that were lost, and the families back home who grieved that loss.
17:40 Ruth, so sorry to hear your dog bite story. Get well soon! I fully empahise as I too have a chequered history with dogs since childhood. I appreciate that many owners love their pets more than their own children and so will excuse anything their pet does to the point of blaming 'victims' - "you shouldn't have run", "screaming only makes dogs excited", "Oh, that's only a nip not a bite", "he just wanted to play", and the classic "dogs can sense bad people" etc etc!
good for you. get yourself home, regroup and prep for your next trip. You always produce great quality content. keep it up. I very much enjoy following your trips
Hi Ruth, I'm new to your channel. So sorry about what happened to you on your journey. I think a gold star award is in order for your resilience and determination to keep going in what were very trying situations. I was once chased by a dog when I was a wee boy on my way to primary school in Glasgow. Natural instinct was to run and the owner caught their dog before it caught me. It was scary and it took me a while to get over it, but I eventually did and I seem to get on well with dogs - I'm 70 now by the way. I love all animals, well except the squirrels that keep coming down and eating all the bird food. In a nutshell, we all have difficult times Ruth, some we can control and some we can't. It's part of life's rich tapestry someone once told me; maybe it is, I don't know. The important thing is to try and put it behind you and move on. Can be tough at times, but I think it makes us stronger and yet more resilient and more determined. Look forward to going through your earlier videos and seeing your new ones. Paul, Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
Ruth!!! I can't believe you went through all of this behind the scenes while giving us such top quality content of your travels throughout northern France. I have enjoyed this series of videos so much and am so, so sorry that all of this happened to you. If it had of been me, I would have gone home in tears after the second instance, LOL. You are an absoute trooper. Enjoy your time back home and rest up for your next adventure 😊 xx
I would sue the hell out of that dog owner! That is totally unacceptable! I'm glad it wasn't more serious but still, that experience was very traumatic. Take care and have a safe trip back to Scotland.
Oh relax. It is people like you who bring lawsuits without serious injury who make barristers rich, and then the insurance companies raise everyone’s insurance rates. Ruth is a nice woman, unlike you. She only wanted a sincere apology.
@@Alastair6 You are spot on Alastair, she should sue that dog owner, it's not the dogs fault, it's always the owners fault for not having the dog controlled, next time it could kill a child or an adult. the law is our only resort to stop this.
@@glo-f9y Here in the USA dog owners are required by law to have their animals on leash at all times in public spaces. If a dog bites someone, the dog is put in quarantine at the owners expense and the owners do pay monetary damages to the victim.
Oh my goodness Ruth, that's terrible about the dog biting you. My wife and I said just come home to Scotland. On a more positive note. The ferry from Holland to Newcastle is fantastic, I've sailed that ferry a few times and the live music on board was brilliant. Take care and hope to see you safely home soon.
Tip for the future, if a dog starts barking at you aggressively don't run away screaming. They'll instinctively see you as prey. Stand your ground. Be the Alpha.
Yes, they sense your fear and the attack becomes worse. Stand your ground and yell no!! I was walking my two very small dogs and had a very large dog come after us. I yelled no to that dog in a very fierce way. I believe that saved us, be brave my friend.
My second video of yours, so sorry with this experience. You are such a trooper. IN spite of all you make it a pleasure to to see and hear you. You give a good insight into that type of traveling.
@@ruthaisling You know, I thought at first glance at video thumbnail, you were Lucy Worsley . She's quite a historian. You have a charm also, even though you may be in a harrowing situation. I will certainly pop in to your channel when time permits. Anything Scottish from bagpipes on to other UK content is delightful to me. Be safe in your travels.
God, I just want to give you a hug! You have been through the wringer. Thank you for sharing the experiences with us all. I hope you can at least feel a little better from the supportive messages.
Oh my dear girl you are so brave you are so blessed that dog bite did t break your skin. Because they can cause terrible infections. So glad youre home.
I have a serious phobia of dogs. Dog owners sometimes think it's funny but it can be terrifying. I would have gone straight home. Hopefully you'll go back one day with better luck. Thanks for making videos Ruth, I really enjoy them ❤
I'm scared of big dogs, and that doesn't have to be very big. When I was little I was attacked by one and so was my brother on a different occasion. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
I dont mind dogs (well behaved ones anyway) and I'm not a small guy, but even I find large dogs can be intimidating when they're running up to you. You don't know if it wants a belly rub or to bite your leg. Unfortunately many owners are too lazy to train their pets so you never know.
I was just skating today at my local beach & harbor & a big black dog was running around not on a leash & I had to yell at the owner to hold his dog because they always chase & jump on me because of skates. People really suck letting their dogs do this to people!
Tip,,,when you encounter a strange dog, Do Not look it in the eyes! That says to them that you are challenging them! Also, do Not Run! That encourages them to chase you! Thank goodness you didn’t get broken skin ! I hope you read this. I’ve grown up with dogs and know a lot about their behavior. Never show fear. I’m so sorry for your experience. Maybe you should carry mace spray with you since you are alone. Both for aggressive dogs and humans! 😊 take care and see you in your next adventure.❤
You can't know how every dog reacts. I also was attached by a dog in the park. Before I never feared dogs. Then I was just walking and a middle-size dog was sitting in the middle of the area and 2 teenage girls were frolicking in the waterfall, it was their dog. The dog was silent, but as soon as I approached him, he jumped at my knee and bit me. Because I wore jeans and the dog bit me in the knee, my skin wasn't broken, even the fabric of the jeans didn't get broken. But I was shocked and since then I'm trying to avoid all dogs. Another dog jumped at me when I intentionally turned my back, but it was a large dog who wanted just to play with me. However, the woman let him run free and when he jumped at me, she just said: "It's OK." No, it wasn't OK, because I didn't want strange dogs jumping at my long cream coat. Some dog owners are disrespectful and arrogant humans...
I am so sorry all these things happened to you. It is a good idea in these circumstances to "follow your gut" and do what you need to do to feel comfortable and safe. Good for you to do just that!
Oh my. So difficult to know what to say, other than how very sorry I was to hear about all your problems. The dog attack in particular is so shocking. 😨 I hope your undoubted trauma has eased and that you are in a better place now. Good luck and take care. 🥺
Hi Ruth...I'm on the 3rd video of yours...they very kindly came down my algorithm 😂🎉 Such an eventful trip 🤔 you have done incredibly well with the stress levels ❤ and up until recently being a dog owner, to come across a dog owner who takes absolutely no control or responsibility is harrowing! To hear the aftershock in your voice..I feel for you and really hope you could experience the joy and love that they can bring ❤❤❤
I really felt for you and the events, and after the dog attack, i just wanted to give you a cuddle, and as a fellow Scot you know how good that is when things are not going well. Great videos as always.
So sorry to hear of all your problems and I agree with your decision to go home! I have enjoyed your travels and they're such high quality. Please regroup and come back when you are ready.
Bless your heart Miss Ruth! All those things add up and take away the joy of the vacation trip. Hope and pray the rest of your trip is safe and you get home to Scotland. May God protect you!
I only discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching. I’m so sorry you had this distressing time. Going home to regroup sounds very sensible. Take care, and if you’re not home yet, safe journey.
I can’t blame you for wanting to go home. That has been a string of unfortunate events, and would have shaken any one of us. I very much enjoyed the WW1 episode, and hope you make some more of them. Wishing you well.
Oh my Ruth, what a scary experience for you. I have a dog but as a child was very scared of dogs so really appreciate how terrifying this must of been. A huge vitual hug sent. I hope the remainder of your journey has no further upsets for you and you are back to feeling A1 okay very soon. So enjoy your videos Ruth, thank you .
Oh dear so sorry for all of the problems you have had. Going home is the right thing to do. So well done that you filmed the memorials in such an informative and respectful way without mentioning the problems. Many dog owners should have greater control over them. On a visit to England with my cousin she was attacked by a dog and all the lady owner said was to the dog « leave the lady alone just because she doesn’t have a dog » No apology at all.
I was attacked by 2 alsatians when young whilst on a beach. I was scared of dogs all thru my childhood, eventually i did get over it a bit with the help of a family friend who owned a lovely friendly spaniel but to this day if i see a dog off the lead it takes a lot of control not to freeze or panic. If i see a dog off lead I will avoid walking by, turn around go another way, anything to avoid it. You are not alone believe me.
I am a retired professor of history, and a world traveler, whose grandfather served in Europe during World War I. I really appreciate your interest in visiting areas related to the ‘Great War’. I have spent a lot of time on battlefields and in military cemeteries to honor those who served and died while doing so. Your TH-cam videos are excellent and take me away to many special places where I have also been or would like to go but might not now be able to do. Su tranajo-bien hecho, senorita!
Really sorry that you had serious problems encountered back to back during your stay in France. Never give up on exploring as long as you feel alright Ruth.
I'm so sorry that these things happened to you! I really enjoy your videos but your safety is paramount and completely understand! I'm sending you a virtual hug and hope the rest of the trip is way better. ♥️
You made the right decision, I always say if your not enjoying yourself it’s time to change. It’s always harder when you are a solo traveler. Take care and look forward to seeing your next adventures 👍🚐
Wow, you got a lot on your plate over there in France. Van switched to self-destruct sequence, stupid dog owners, freezing cold... I so felt the shock in your voice after the dog attack. I am so sorry there was no one there to hug you and let you cry away the shock and pain, poor dear. Obviously, the dog bite ruptured a blood vessel, and that does hurt a lot even though your skin seemed untouched. You managed everything bravely and still had the heart to visit Yper in Belgium. A lot was going on in that area during WWI. You should come back to Belgium in a warmer season and revisit some places. All the best to you, from Germany
So sorry you went through the heater problem! What you showed would have been an easy fix. They sell that flexible pipe at home improvement or auto parts store. Always good to carry a small variety of basic tools with you. Always have a security plan while out traveling by yourself. Thank you for sharing and I'm so glad that you are ok after being attacked by a dog.
Hi Ruth. So sorry to hear about your tribulations- especially the dog attack. Thank you so much for your great vlog- i hope things get better quickly and look forward to watching more❤
Oh Ruth, what a run of bad luck. You are obviously such a strong and brave person with everything you do and have achieved. No shame in heading home for a wee break and a reset. Your videos are so honest and down to earth, and so enjoyable. I look forward to the next one!
Reading this I just felt so very, very sorry that all these trials and tribulations happened on a single holiday. I don’t ever think someone is wrong to cut a holiday short. My wife and I have done the same many times, either the weather has turned or one of us has been poorly. As you say going home will make you feel much better. Safe onwards journey, please take care.
you are a very courageous lady. I am so sorry for the ordeals you went through and handled each situation very intelligently. I share your fear of dogs and was chased by a vicious looking dog in south of France who was not on a leash with the owner present and not doing anything. I had to yell yell at her to get her freaking dog away from me.She took her time to react and was enjoying the scene. Despite all that you went through, you produced a very informative video. Thank you!
Oh, Ruth, this video absolutely broke my heart. I am so, so sorry to hear all of the negative challenges you had to deal with on this very special trip. It is just not fair. I am a dog lover and dog owner, growing up with small and large dogs, but hate (hate, hate) people who let their dogs run loose or have no control. I don't understand it. And don't get me started on those who don't pick up after their dogs. I have friends who are scared of dogs having had similar experiences to you. This must have been an absolute nightmare for you and the response (or lack thereof) by the owner is just disgusting. I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope you got home safely and are healing. Sending hugs from Canada. :(
Hi Ruth, we're privileged that you choose to share your travels with us and I'm really sorry this series of events has spoiled your trip and caused you pain - especially the dog! Going home is absolutely fine, absolutely your choice and we wish you (and Ernie) well. We have a five-year old campervan that, despite its relative youth, still manages to throw up irritating issues that are hard to fix while out on the road. Travel safely and we look forward to hearing from you again soon 🙂
Dog owners with no control of their animals infuriate me. "Oh, he's just being friendly" they laugh, as it jumps up scratching and covering someone in mud. I'm lucky, I'm not scared of dogs so I am fully prepared to control it if the owner won't. This usually goes down as well as you'd expect, but f- 'em. I can imagine how scary it was to have that dog go after you, not nice at all. Not sure how far in advance you release your vids, but I can fully recommend the In Flanders Fields museum in Leper/Ypres. Very moving (I've also been to visit relatives that fell in WW1 - at Loos in my case). Hopefully nothing else falls off / explodes / breaks / self combusts in the van ;-)
Thanks, it’s nice to see your comment sharing that and how many people have liked it. It’s not easy to share that opinion as I feel everyone loves dogs apart from me! Thanks for the recommendations!
Also Chez Tommy in Pozières, a restaurant-museum in the heart of the battlefields East of Albert. July 1st 1916, first day of the Battle of the Somme between Albert and Roye -- 19,000 young men dead, ten of thousands wounded. The deadliest battle in the history of humanity. 30000 dead and wounded in the first 6 minutes of the battle. The Germans couldn't believe their eyes when they saw soldiers walking toward them. What does the British chief of staff order for July 2nd 1916? Another assault, just to verify the theory that one machine gun replaces 50 soldiers armed with a rifle. With an equally catastrophic result. They tested their theory for another couple of years, to be dead sure. My grandfather was extraordinarily lucky to be made prisoner before Verdun. Twenty one years later, he was faced with another war.
There is a TH-cam channel based in Scotland called Photography Online and the hostess is name Ruth Taylor. You two could be sisters! So unreal how you two are similar
Your productions on this trip have been outstanding so it's very disappointing to hear of the misfortunes that you have suffered. I suppose it's just "life". Hopefully you will get home safely and recover from these experiences and return during a spell of more favourable weather. As someone who has largely travelled alone for around 18 years I appreciate how tough it can sometimes get. Stay strong and keep up the excellent work !
I am so sorry you went through this. Sometimes it’s just best to end the trip, go home and recollect yourself. France isn’t going anywhere so you can always go visit later.
You've nothing to be blamed for; sometimes things go wrong, and a trip is not enjoyable anymore. That's part of the adventures ! Sorry to hear you've had a bad experiences around, hope we'll see you back in nothern France ! So many things to discover. Love from the Ypres front !
My daughter was bitten twice by small dogs when she was very young.I have no time for people who can't control their dog.I have had dogs when I was young but I made sure they listened to me.If a dog bites a child put it down sorry that is how I feel.I your case you need a apology from these selfish people .
Hi Ruth youve made your way in your camper into my algorithm. Im so sorry for what you had to endure. Id have been gone after been locked out the van so youve demonstrated much resilience. Something didnt want your strong will and heart in france. Im sure you dont need me to remind you to be mindful of future trips and prepare accordingly just incase!!!! Strong woman of the world, im routing for you 😊
Sorry about your dog problems, some dog owners are very irresponsible and really shouldn’t be in charge of dogs or even own them. Glad to hear that you are calling into Ypres on your way home. I had a week’s holiday in Bruges a few years ago. The tour I was on took us to Ypres and the battlefields there. The big hall in Ypres has a great WWI museum and of course at the end of town is the Menin Gate. Here every evening the Belgians play the Last Post every night since WWI. Unfortunately wasn’t able to stay until the evening. I found the battlefields here very interesting and moving, especially as we had a very knowledgeable guide. We saw the Ypres and Tyne Cott cemeteries. We were also taken to see one of the very few German cemeteries, very dark and eerie, no nice pale sandstone or marble. All tombstones jet black and very gothic. If you have time Bruges is a great city to visit. Great sites of interest, canals, beers and lovely chocolate. Bruges can get very busy but maybe this time of the year it should be OK.
Really sorry to hear about your problems Ruth. As a dog owner myself it makes me angry when folk have their dogs out of control. It’s all about irresponsible owners most of the time and not the dog itself. I’ve always been an advocate of dog licensing in the UK as so many idiots obtain dogs and don’t train them. As you’re well aware they can be very dangerous when in the wrong hands. Hope you’re doing well and have enjoyed all the videos from France 🇫🇷. Just make more Scotland videos - the best county on earth 😁
Thank you. I like some of my friend’s dogs and they are so well behaved and nice. Like you say, some dogs are not trained. Looking forward to travelling more of Scotland this year. ❤️🏴
Awe!! I feel so bad for you! I’ve travelled alone many times and bad things happened and I just felt so alone and sad and wanted my family! Love your channel! Watched your ferry show and you are so authentic that I actually started feeling nauseous, lol!
Ruth, well done for coming through so much and maintaining a good level of common sense in such adversity. You handled everything so well. Sometimes life is like this and we get a number of harsh lessons all at once - never easy, but commend yourself on having got through it. I hope your leg is better now. I can understand your fear of dogs - some people don’t understand this, but having been attacked by dogs when I was a kid twice, I can relate to that paralysing fear. People don’t understand that it is a trauma no different to PTSD. It’s a very real, founded fear and not to be dismissed. I’ve had people say, just keep walking past the dog or to make friends with the dogs - things that anyone who has ever been attacked by a dog would never say. Take care and thank you for sharing. All good wishes 😀
lucky you had the window cracked open for the starlink cable haha, I have mine going through a window of my house but its a tiny window not attached to a door. Maybe keep a key in a magnetic key safe tucked under the can on the bodywork somewhere
You have done SO well dealing with all of the tribulations! Well done you! Cutting your leg and being bitten (scary) is putting the top hat on everything else. So sorry your trip has been spoiled by those things. But how well did you do up to that point!!!
So sorry Ruth, especially after all your prep/excitement that it’s come to this, but brave to make the decision to leave, sometimes bailing is the best option. I was attacked by a dog when I was 6 and it does stay with you, sounds like you’ve been particularly unlucky ☹️ Hopefully the van issues are fairly easy to sort at home, dealing with issues like this on trips I find a bit of an adventure, but especially difficult in that weather and the language barrier, seems you got decent help though. Enjoyed watching your other trip videos, we used to always go on camping trips to France/Belgium etc on summer holidays so brings back a lot of memories for me. Hope your leg has healed and best of luck for the next trip, glad you might go back later ❤
Have enjoyed your videos of war graves visits and are sorry to hear of all the van troubles and of course the dog attack. So pleased you have had no complications from the bite but sad to think the owner of dog did not come and check on you and apology for her neglect to keep dog under control. Enjoy your onward journey through Belgium and perhaps you will return to France in the future in warmer weather. Best wishes and good luck from New Zealand!
Thanks for sharing your trip!❤ California here. I enjoy your adventures! Scary about the dog! Pray for protection!🙏🏻🕊😇🧂💕☮️ I’am glad I found your video, nice & real.💙
That is a lot of bad luck on one trip! Anyone who says "you should have done this, you should have done that" is just being churlish. I also think some people just have no proper concept of what dog ownership should entail. Even if you're convinced your dog is the sweetest in the world, people should respect the fact that not everyone is keen. I love dogs but I can be wary of them at times and it's surprising how often owners are surprised at that wariness. They forget that dogs are not robots that can be programmed to always behave predictably. Training is effective most of the time, but they're animals with their own instincts and things can and do go wrong. For what it's worth, I love Belgium. It has amazing food and beautiful towns and cities. Both Flanders and Wallonia are very charming places. I know it's a little while ago since all this happened but I hope you're feeling better about it all and your leg is okay.
I like your channel even more with the failures and mishaps. See it this way, anything goes wrong = more content. Life is not always pretty, but with the right outlook most things can work for your benefit. Go you!
Hi Ruth I am a new subscriber. I just found your channel and was so saddened to hear about your experiences in France. I love dogs and my grandfather had a kennel and sold prize winning dogs and I have had a dog all my life. But I too have been cornered and threatened by dogs out in public. Nine times out of ten the reason a dog is like this is because of its owner. Some dog breeds are suited to life in a camper van or for traveling in small spaces and other dogs are just not. Also if they have not been properly socialized with other people outside the family or if they have not been exercised they can go almost mad once they are free. It is not a pretty sight and it is hard for the owners to understand how their beloved dog who has never even growled at them can attack another person or animal. We have to have respect for the dog and realize as much as we might want them to be our "children" they are not. They are companion animals to be sure, but at the same time the owner who by virtue of his or her bigger brain is responsible for learning how dogs think and become understanding of what they need and how to train them. A well loved, well fed, well socialized, well trained and well exercised dog is a happy dog. If you take anyone of those things a way their reactions can become suddenly unpredictable. Also I can't state this strongly enough how important it is to choose the right dog breed for your way of life. You may love a certain aggressive breed and think they are so cute and adorable, but if you can not be the dominant alpha male/female of your pack do not by any means get a dog that you can not physically control! So dear one, once you get on the other side of this experience I hope that you will consider to have a little therapy to help with any anxiety you have lingering from this attack and slowly bring some dogs back into your life, learn a little bit more about them and regain some of your confidence around them. You are not wrong for feeling the way you do, and it is certainly within your rights to decide not to like dogs. But being anxious and finding ways to avoid them can be exhausting. I want you to feel in control again. There are so many more kind and gentle good dogs than there are bad ones. And as I said this dog might have been a good dog if his owner had taken better care of him. I am so thankful that the bite did not break the skin. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Happy wanderings!
OMG that trip is you need a big hug. Sounds very much like this is one trip that if anything will go wrong it had to happen on this trip and then to top it off, you had the home trip on the Ferry, (which was the very first clip I have seen of yours)... Wow. Big hugs from afar. At the same time I could see some humor in this all awhile thinking OMG. Good feelings when you mentioned that the Camper Van guy helped you, which shows there is still some good people in the world. May all your trips forward be much better and we can still enjoy them with you. Thank you and so sorry for what you went through.
Wow, so sorry to hear of your attack by a dog, fortunate that it didn't break the skin. You're right, some dog owners assume they have a god given right to won and exercise dogs and don't always realise that some other people aren't keen. Sorry it has caused you to cut your trip short (along with the other issues and the cold weather), hopefully you'll be back on the road in France in the future. Stay safe 👍
Sorry about your dog bite and you having to come home early hope you have a safe journey back to Newcastle from Amsterdam have a relaxing time back home .I went to Norway on the ferry from Newcastle this could be your next trip travelling around Norway and hope you have no more problems with your van
Yes had a good time it was only a mini cruise from Newcastle it was a 18 hours crossing arrived in the south of Norway and went through the fijord to Bergen stayed there for a few hours before going back on the ferry

You're not silly. You had a plan in mind & one thing & another it just didn't workout for a longer time. You are taking care of yourself. You have the freedom to do so. Bravo!
So sorry to hear about all you troubles on your trip and I can understand your feeling of wanting to go home. Like you I have a fear of dogs because I was bitten as a child, quite badly, and since then I have lost my trust. I often encounter dogs running out of control ,no leash and no voice control and I have to avoid certain parks where I live because of that issue. You are very brave to have done this trip in the Winter and I'm glad you had a good person to help you with your van.......Kindness makes all the difference!
I would certainly consider carrying pepper spray... especially as a female traveling alone, always take precautions to protect yourself against all kinds of unforeseen attacks in unfamilar areas when not in your vehicle. 24:46
Many thanks for your very informative and thoughtful videos. I just love them and you, too ❤️ I can understand every word you say. Some folks from good old England not so much. I live in sunny Ft. Myers, Florida USA. I'm Norwegian, English, Scottish, and Irish. I'm too old now to visit those places, but your videos are able to show me just how beautiful they are. God bless you and your sweet camper.❤
Don't run. Don't scream. You will never outrun a dog. Running can only make it worse. Screaming like prey can trigger the predator instinct. Act like you are in control and 99 times out of 100, they will not attack.
I have been watching your videos for a while Ruth - love them! I visited Scotland for the first time this May and fell in love with it. I used to live near Lille in France. I'm so sorry to hear you had these problems there. I'm glad you are ok. There are no 'mistakes' we all learn as we adventure through life. You don't have to be perfect or do everything the 'rigot'way - this is not how humans actually are. No one expects perfection of their friends or family, why should we expect it from ourselves? Be kind to yourself as you journey through life, you are learning and growing and it is really hard to travel solo in a van in a a new place with so many systems to look after. You are doing a great job! Stay safe!
Oh dear poor you. So many thing going wrong for you. At least you are OK thank goodness. Hope you keep going on your amazing adventures. Love watching them. Take care ok.
For everyone saying "don't run""face up to the dog" - I tried that and it didn't work out for me, so it's not universally good advice in a dog attack. Dogs can be very unpredictable and individual when they are not under discipline so armchair quarterbacking after the fact is just ungracious.
After seeing this video, I really feel sorry about the remark on the other video, but am glad you and I talked about it. How unlucky was all this! You have a new fan and friend!
You are so sweet. I am so sorry what happened to you. After watching your ferry video, the trip didn't get much better on the way home either. It is wonderful you have been able to keep such a positive attitude. Good luck to you ; and thanks for sharing your very entertaining videos. If I may make one suggestion: never, ever run from a dog - it only provokes them. Try to remain calm but firm with the creature. You take care, and I hope you got some much-needed rest upon your return to Scotland.
My daughter was attacked by a dog when she was 8 years old on a California beach. She didn’t seek the dog out, it ran up on her. The owners had the nerve to yell at my daughter and then ran off and refused to give out their names or information. 😢 She is 20 now and is not afraid of dogs, but that is something none of us will forget. I am so sorry that you went through this. My grandmother witnessed her grandmother bitten by a rabid dog as a kid and sadly she lost her grandmother due to it. People with dogs need to be responsible for them at all times.❤😢
I love dogs dearly. As a child I was chased down and bitten by two large dogs who got out of a locked gate. I was hurt temp. But learned... Never run from a dog. They misunderstand. Think you are prey. I sent you an email. Dogs are precious. If you have a bad one, look towards the owner for what is the problem. Your dog could get out and hurt a child very badly, since the owners are slack about control. I raised Doberman Pinchers and so did my son. If we could not control our dogs, I would have given them up. I mean that. Pls keep pepper spray with you or a tennis racket in front until someone realized you are in danger. Dogs give you unconditional love. And protection. Thank you for your videos.
Stop ignoring facts. Dogs are the product of breeding intended to have particular traits. You can’t train those traits out. Some dogs are aggressive because they are bred that way. This is an unprovoked bite - nothing an owner would train around.
So sorry you had a rough time in France! You could use a dinner out, to recuperate! Hang in there!
Thank you so much, that is very kind of you. ❤
If you can be anything…be kind!❤
First YOU ARE A TROOPER !
Well done you !
There is such a thing a good luck & at least statistically
l think you need a new gig
I have been attacked and severely bitten by an unleashed dog while walking through a public park and the dog’s owner did nothing to stop it. I have every bit of sympathy for you.
I am sorry to hear this.
wow thats not right !
Get the owner's info bc they (or their insurance) have to pay for the medical care for your injury.
I agree that this needs reporting as a similar attack could happen to an elderly frail individual or a small child with more serious consequences.
The same is true in England and presumably Scotland. These incidents are not trivial, and a child in particular could be very seriously hurt.
That is good to know, thank you for sharing.
I agree the situation needs dealt with. That dogs a liability to children. Be careful going through Newcastle, they bite too 😂. I once b was attacked by a German Shepard whilst cycling on the Union canal towpath. I ended up in the canal ☹️
Sue Their Ass
Just seeing this now and I 100% agreed with the decision you made to go home. You need to destress and rest. I too have been bitten 3 times by different dogs and don’t like to see them off leash. Take care and best wishes.
Just found your channel. I am so sorry all those things happened to you, especially the dog bite. Don't blame you for going back home, either. Enough is enough. Thank you for sharing all of what happened. You are very brave. Take care and heal and rest up.
Thank you so much!
In Albufeira, my Wife and I were attacked by a pack of around half a dozen dogs. The locals just shut their doors! The Police didn't want to know either, luckily we weren't injured but it was very frightening.
That sounds awful!
Hearing that from you, a dog owner is reassuring. Thank you. ❤
😊
So sorry to hear that happened to you Ruth. You really should have reported that attack to the police. In the USA, dog owners get sued in court for such things.
Oh, you have given me goosebumps hearing of getting attacked by the dog. My husband was attacked while I was right next to him......... no apologies or regrets from owners. They wouldn't give me their names so I had to wait until they approached their car so I could get the plate numbers and have the police track them down. It was VERY frightening and it makes my heart ache for you. Carry on and thank you for sharing your trouble - I wish you all the best and thank you for the adventures!
That's so awful to hear about your husband being attacked by a dog too. I hope he is ok now. ❤
My husband was on his bike when an Alsatian bite him on the thigh, it was a scary moment, hope your feeling better, love your videos, my Great Grandfather is on the Menin Gate, hope to go and see it , take care ❤xxx

cant take the wolf from the dog (running can easily trigger a predator's chasing instinct)
what breed was it?
Best.
Good to know, thanks for sharing!
🌸 thank you so much for this tip
A few times I’ve encountered dogs and they were sneering and coming towards me but each time someone bigger showed up and dog backed off.
Never ask what else will happen. You might find out. Sometimes when it rains it pours. I'm sorry about all these negative things that happened.❤
Thanks so much Clive, glad to hear you enjoyed the war videos!
Truly sorry that you've had such a rough trip. Your videos about the memorials were very meaningful to me. I'm not ashamed to say that tears were shed while watching them. It's too easy to forget all the lives that were lost, and the families back home who grieved that loss.
They are such moving and emotional places. 😥
I felt really bad for you. I hope you’re doing okay now
17:40 Ruth, so sorry to hear your dog bite story.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I'm sorry to hear you have had bad experiences too!
good for you. get yourself home, regroup and prep for your next trip. You always produce great quality content. keep it up. I very much enjoy following your trips
Thank you. I hope lots more Scotland trips this year once I’ve sorted out all these issues.
I'm so glad you were (relatively) okay and didn't require any shots for the dog bite.
Inspiring and interesting videos! Love from Scotland. ♥🙏
Thanks so much!
Thank you Paul. I hope you enjoy the other videos.
Thank you Katie, glad to hear you have enjoyed the other videos.
@@ruthaisling And get that sliding door repaired first thing.
I would sue the hell out of that dog owner! That is totally unacceptable! I'm glad it wasn't more serious but still, that experience was very traumatic. Take care and have a safe trip back to Scotland.
Thanks Alastair
Oh relax. It is people like you who bring lawsuits without serious injury who make barristers rich, and then the insurance companies raise everyone’s insurance rates. Ruth is a nice woman, unlike you. She only wanted a sincere apology.
@@glo-f9y You don't know anything about me so you resort to ad hominem attacks. That says a lot about you.
Thanks Jimmy
Tip for the future, if a dog starts barking at you aggressively don't run away screaming. They'll instinctively see you as prey. Stand your ground. Be the Alpha.
The law doesn't require humans to cater to mutts. It does however require flea bag owners to keep those things under control and restrained.
Yes, they sense your fear and the attack becomes worse. Stand your ground and yell no!! I was walking my two very small dogs and had a very large dog come after us. I yelled no to that dog in a very fierce way. I believe that saved us, be brave my friend.
The dog that attacked me approached from behind 🙄 bit me before I could do anything.
Wow, a rough patch of bad luck for you there. You do what feels right under the situation. It’s your life!

Thanks for making videos Ruth, I really enjoy them ❤
Thanks for sharing this Mark. I really understand how you feel. Yes it’s not put me off going back.
They think it’s funny because dog owners are sociopaths.

Thanks for the advice! 🙏
Turning to present your side and not looking can sometimes de escalate a dog to. So sorry. It must have been very frightening.
I have been told that Mace or Pepper spray are illegal in many places in Europe even for self defense.
Yes, never run from a predator like a dog, bear, etc because it triggers their pursuit instinct. But of course this was not your fault.
This is the first time I watched you and I feel SO BAD for you. I hope things turn around for you and you can enjoy the rest of your trip
Things are better now thanks 🙏

Oh dear so sorry for all of the problems you have had. Going home is the right thing to do. So well done that you filmed the memorials in such an informative and respectful way without mentioning the problems. Many dog owners should have greater control over them. On a visit to England with my cousin she was attacked by a dog and all the lady owner said was to the dog « leave the lady alone just because she doesn’t have a dog » No apology at all.
Wow, awful. Sorry to hear about your cousin's bad experience too. 😢
It’s hard not to be afraid of them after what’s happened.

My wife and I have done the same many times, either the weather has turned or one of us has been poorly. As you say going home will make you feel much better. Safe onwards journey, please take care.
Thanks John, good to hear you’ve made similar decisions too in the past
you are a very courageous lady.
Thanks Sandi, I agree also about those who don’t pick up after their dogs. It’s the worst when it gets on your shoes! 😥
Thanks Dave, sorry to hear you've had some van issues too
Dog owners with no control of their animals infuriate me.
How do you "control it" as you say?
@mikeoglengroggy. In the USA you end it AND the owner if their feeling froggy. Legal to defend yourself. Not sure if limp wrist can carry but we can.
Most dogs do jump at you not the inverse. Have no time for them and their igorant owners.
So sorry to hear about your difficulties. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks
What a rough couple of weeks. Glad you have kept your good attitude.
I'm sorry that you had such a rough trip.
You made the right decision to come home.
There is a TH-cam channel based in Scotland called Photography Online and the hostess is name Ruth Taylor. You two could be sisters! So unreal how you two are similar
So sorry to hear about your issues, sending you a virtual hug X❤
Thanks Carlton ❤
So sorry all that happened to you! Send you lots of hugs! I think you are so brave, handling everything like a champ!
Thank you so much!
Thank you, the next trip has to be better!
I am so sorry you went through this. Sometimes it’s just best to end the trip, go home and recollect yourself. France isn’t going anywhere so you can always go visit later.
Yes very true 👍
You've nothing to be blamed for; sometimes things go wrong, and a trip is not enjoyable anymore. That's part of the adventures !
Sorry to hear you've had a bad experiences around, hope we'll see you back in nothern France ! So many things to discover.
Love from the Ypres front !
Thank you. I really liked visiting but felt ready to leave after this happened.
Strong woman of the world, im routing for you 😊
Thank you so much!
I think you made the right decision to go home. This was a stressful time for you.
Thanks for the recommendations Peter!
Thanks Karen, appreciate you watching! ❤️
I’ll try and get one of those. Thank you for the advice.
You have done SO well dealing with all of the tribulations! Well done you! Cutting your leg and being bitten (scary) is putting the top hat on everything else. So sorry your trip has been spoiled by those things. But how well did you do up to that point!!!
Thanks Carol, I’m still happy I made the trip there. Maybe without the van would have been better.
So sorry Ruth, especially after all your prep/excitement that it’s come to this, but brave to make the decision to leave, sometimes bailing is the best option. I was attacked by a dog when I was 6 and it does stay with you, sounds like you’ve been particularly unlucky ☹️
Hopefully the van issues are fairly easy to sort at home, dealing with issues like this on trips I find a bit of an adventure, but especially difficult in that weather and the language barrier, seems you got decent help though.
Enjoyed watching your other trip videos, we used to always go on camping trips to France/Belgium etc on summer holidays so brings back a lot of memories for me.
Hope your leg has healed and best of luck for the next trip, glad you might go back later ❤
Thank you, glad you've enjoyed the other videos!
Your a brave lady. I'm sorry what you've gone through in your travels. But thank you for sharing your experiences. Godspeed from America.
Thanks for sharing your trip!❤ California here. I enjoy your adventures! Scary about the dog! Pray for protection!🙏🏻🕊😇🧂💕☮️ I’am glad I found your video, nice & real.💙
Thanks for watching from California!
Thanks Michael, the Belgium video will be coming soon
I like your channel even more with the failures and mishaps. See it this way, anything goes wrong = more content. Life is not always pretty, but with the right outlook most things can work for your benefit. Go you!
Thank you. Wasn’t sure if I would share about this but it’s good to share the bad things that happen too.
The guy who helped me was so kind. I met many kind people in France actually!
Stay safe 👍
Thanks Trevor ❤️
Sorry about your dog bite and you having to come home early hope you have a safe journey back to Newcastle from Amsterdam have a relaxing time back home .I went to Norway on the ferry from Newcastle this could be your next trip travelling around Norway and hope you have no more problems with your van
Norway looks amazing, did you have a good time there?
Yes had a good time it was only a mini cruise from Newcastle it was a 18 hours crossing arrived in the south of Norway and went through the fijord to Bergen stayed there for a few hours before going back on the ferry

Dear Ruth...
Think of it like mountain climbing.
There are stormy days and snowy days.
On bad days, it’s important to retreat.
Now I remember!・・ Now I remember! WOW!
When it comes to adventure mountaineering, it's George Mallory.

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences too.😢
I would certainly consider carrying pepper spray... especially as a female traveling alone, always take precautions to protect yourself against all kinds of unforeseen attacks in unfamilar areas when not in your vehicle. 24:46
Thank you for the advice!
Stay safe!
Thank you for such nice comments. I really appreciate it 😊
Oh dear poor you.
It's horrible advice.
I have been bit about 10 times by dog when I was a kid and every time I frozen in fear and was badly bitten I hate dogs
I'm so sorry to hear about your family's traumatic experience 😢
i was mauled by a pitbull and suffer PTSD
Sorry to hear about your bad experiences too.
