Lakers Draft Dalton Knecht (Wing, Tennessee) With the 17th Pick... Steal of the Draft?

  • Last season, the Lakers had opportunities to draft players in the first round that were projected to help an NBA team right away. They had a chance to draft the "lottery guy who falls." They did neither.
This year, the same opportunity presented itself, this time with the same player. As names went off the board, University of Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht, one of college basketball's best scorers in his only season with the Volunteers, was still hanging out in the audience. Projected as a lottery pick for most of the last couple months, Knecht was still available when the Lakers made their selection at 17. While nobody was really talking about him as an option-Rob Pelinka said the team had the SEC Player of the Year projected into the top 10-LA jumped at the opportunity.
Knecht is a great off-ball offensive player, described by many in the draft as one of the most NBA ready players available. He can score at multiple levels and should be the exact type of offensive player who fits in well with a team anchored by gravity-inducing/attention-demanding players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. How well he develops defensively is a question, and teams may have passed on Knecht due to his age -- 23 at the start of the season. Young for normal people, old for NBA prospects.
That limits his upside, potentially, but the Lakers aren't looking for him to develop into a star, just a high end rotation piece with a valuable skill set. His potential to play right away has far more value than hypothetical upside three or so years down the road.
Overall, the Lakers (as you'd expect) say they're thrilled. Certainly the pick will grade out well, just because of the perceived value. But in terms of a pick that makes sense for where the Lakers are, it makes sense, too.

Tennessee fan here. Knecht had incredibly high usage at TN. He’s not a bad defender.. he was a busy offensive player. I think people are making him into a “bad” defender, but there isn’t any real reason to believe he can’t be a marginal to good defender. He’ll be a better defender than Austin (I think) with work.

Great pick, sounds like he can be a good fit. However, we still need to address our needs. We still need to upgrade Rui that can play defense and try and get a athletic PG that can put pressure on the defense. DLo simply doesn't fit nor is he a disciplined player. However, I expect Vando to replace Rui at the starting position. We also need a big body center that can play reasonable D that can take the load off of AD when needed.

bench kinecht for vando at 2 and put prince at 1 so we get 1a 1b 30 fga each chemistry going to carry the team at start of the season. every game is 2016 finals game 5 1a 1b.
as i was watching this i sort of see the need to mess around with buddy at 68 power forward than start an injury prone wood. jv will work moving the gay tad off of 5. if ya get cp that will orchestrate the bench. kinecht ain't nba ready lol

If lebron wanted to win and he already had a shit ton of money, he could sign for cheap. Dlo walks. They could sign a free agent probably have about 30 mil space. Trade for dejounte. Lebron could have terms for signing a cheap deal like getting Chris Paul if he walks and bronny in the draft . I was thinking a team like Chris Paul dejounte Paul George lebron ad, jhs Christie connect rui wood/free agent. Think that would be realistic.

This is a good move. Whilst it hasn’t solved some clear team needs, it creates some flexibility and knock on effects. I don’t think someone who was immediately going to solve some of our needs was even available but time will tell.
