Trump’s Feud With China Is Already Hurting American Farmers (HBO)

  • Farmers believe they're the collateral damage in President Trump’s escalating battle with China over trade.
    China’s threatened tariffs on more than 100 U.S. goods - including soybeans, corn, and cotton - are already impacting crop prices, even though they haven’t yet been implemented, and for many growers planting season is just starting.
    After China made the announcement two weeks ago, soybean prices plummeted, upending farmers’ budgets for the coming year. One of them, Illinois farmer Steve Fricke, told VICE News the tariff standoff could reduce his gross income by 20 percent. He said his expenses would remain the same, so his take-home income from the small farm, typically at least $60,000 a year, could be cut by more than two-thirds.
    "As we look at that field, we just know how many dollars of loss that is going to be this fall," Fricke said, pointing to the field where he'll plant his soybean crop over the next month.
    "We still have to plant [the soybeans], but we just know we’re not gonna come out ahead," Fricke said.
    Beyond a threatened trade war with China, farmers have been worried about Trump's other trade policies such as exiting the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement and renegotiating NAFTA, Fricke said.
    “Agriculture sometimes is at odds with some of the economy in our country, so we knew that we were going to have to pay some price. We just don't want to pay the whole price,” he said.
    But he remains a Trump supporter - for now. Fricke said he’s hoping Trump will listen to farmers and find a solution before the trade fight, and farmers’ fortunes, get worse.
    "I just emailed the president and all our representatives today about, you know, let's be careful how we think about doing this, because we were already in a difficult situation in agriculture right now. We don't need it to be worse,” he said.

      Hillary voters care about farmers. Farmers barely survived the drought of the 1980's. Tax revenue pay for farm subsides. Trump gave a massive tax cut, of which 80% of the benefits go to the wealthiest millionaires and billionaires. Any farmer who saw that tax cut go into effect should know that farm subsidies cuts are coming their way soon. So the farmer in this clip should be foaming at the mouth at Trump's irresponsible tax cuts that will hurt the small farmers across the country. But for him to still stand by Trump is why people NOW don't feel sorry for them. They don't know who their real enemy is...and its not Hillary!

      The irony is that Russia is gonna benefit from this the most. The sanctions forced them to diversify their industries and have turned them from a country that couldn't feed themselves into one of the biggest grain exporters in the world. Their agricultural industry is exploding. If China is gonna buy soybeans from anyone, it's gonna be Russia.
      Btw, if we never placed sanctions on Russia, then their economy probably would have died of Dutch Disease, like Venezuela's economy did.

      As it stands right now, 10% of Russians suffer malnutrition because they can't buy enough food, food quality has been reduced dramatically, and 30% of Russians can't buy sufficient clothes.
      They lost nearly half of their trade volume since Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army terrorist strike against flight MH17 and more things which made Russia impopular.
      By the way, you need to recheck Venezuela. They face hyperinflation as a result of the socialist government stealing private assets, which collapsed investment into Venezuela overnight. If you got goods or coin you want to export it as quickly as possible, because its value decreases literally by the hour. Goods, money and people flee the country.
      The Dutch situation in the 1970's was a too strong increase in value of the coin, the gulden, because of natural gas exports, resulting in a bad competitive position for Dutch industries which couldn't export anymore.
      It's the opposite of Venezuela's problem.

      Trump's already de-clawed his anti-free trade measures. The EU called a meeting where they basically showed him a big middle finger and made it clear they would wage a full-out trade war that would make the anti-Bush tariffs seems like childsplay by comparison.
      That put together is the vast majority of world trade that the US can reach and is influenced by, so Trump dropped his plans to hamper trade with the EU.

      +Fumbles this may help you understand what I meant above. Corporate tax breaks were HUGE - from 35% to 21% (that's a 40% reduction). Of course, many large corps don't pay anything near that tax rate. I'm pretty sure most people didn't get 40% bonuses or pay increases.
      CEOs are taking advantage of the corporate tax cuts to buy back stock in order to reward investors (BTW at that level most CEOs income is usually in the form of stocks/options, so it directly impacts their compensation). Buying back stock takes stock out of circulation, so it increases the value of the remaining stock. ADP CEO even admitted the benefits will be to investors on the news. Other CEOs have been equally open about what they will do with tax breaks to benefit investors. [Why it's important - making rich people richer by cutting taxes]
      Why am I talking about the corporate taxes, right? You got a tax break. Well because a lot of that 'puff' benefit to average families was based on the companies using their big tax breaks to make life better for the average person. Politicians selling the plan claimed between $4000-9000 in benefits for the average family. [Why it's important - This will increase the deficit significantly and may reduce important Government funding - like Education]
      Hardworking families will see some limited benefit (mostly from their own tax breaks, but there will not really be 'trickle down' like that claimed to sell the tax plan.
      Trickle down can, in theory, work. But, only typically in capital heavy manufacturing where the only way to increase the size of your business is to make more stuff so you need more people and factories. In that situation you would take your tax break and create more jobs. As much of big business has off-shored labor - they are not interested. Most money in the US is made through finance.
      I'd suggest you look at the breakout of the USA GDP (www.bea.gov) - the largest sector for our GDP is financial - it is basically 2x that of manufacturing. Making money by moving money - rich people's territory.
      There are outliers - some companies will take the opportunity to invest. Hilton was supposed to build more hotels (capital investment). Walmart provided bonuses and some pay increases (side note - WMT will get some of this back, as most of their workers shop at WMT. I've not looked at how this impacts their workers on gov aid).
      NET - Rich people will benefit the most from this tax plan and likely at your expense. I'd rather have people like you get the benefits. Hope that helps.

    If the Republicans did not need their delusional asses votes, they would have cut off the bribes this voting block (farmers and farmer dependent jobs) a LONG time ago.

      The fact that republican voters convinced themselves they should believe all the provably inaccurate trash that someone scripted for him (DJ) from minute one* of his campaign and are now seeing the manifestations of his failed temper-tantrum policies because reality doesn't sinc up with DJ's narcisistic, sociopathic, ego-driven imagination, yet they say, in not so many words, "I support him even though he is literally driving us toward foreclosures and bankruptcy because working backwards from a conclusion in effort to give some appearance of credibility toward my poor decisions is more important than saying 'I fucked up because all that was really behind my vote was simple hatred of people that live, believe and vote differently than me. I won't do that again.'"
      Personally, I think they should have voted for Hillary. I feel they would have been pleasantly surprised at how much of a warmongering crony-capitalist she and the rest of the neoliberals really are.
      *Anyone running for POTUS that says "I'm not a politician" is catering to the smallest common denominators in the particularly eneducated demographic seeing as the POTUS is, axiomatically, a political position. Also axiomatic, "clean coal" never has been, isn't and never will be coal that's been mined, washed and then burned so it emits less toxic pollutants. That's not how any of this works.

      Nick Polachi I don't know if propoganda is the right word for it but it is the typically simplistic, heavy narrative nonsene that Vice now pumps out these days. None of this exists in vacuum. China buys US exports because they need them. In the area if food exports, they have been securing most of the world's exports for many years now. They bully other buyers with their own massive buying power. The Soybeans they slapped a 25% tarrif on were instead bought by the EU. Someone else in standing in line behind China. That's how you win a trade war. The only thing that the US actually needs from China is rare earth. People can buy socks from Bangladesh. And even then, the US has huge untapped rare earth reserves but it's just easier to let China pollute their own country because it is very dirty business getting it out of the ground. Japan just found a huge deposit so they won't have their supplies used as leverage by China as they have done in the past.
      What truly terrifies China is that everyone else who is being economically bullied by them, also begins to stand up to them. The fact that our own media argues against our own best interests is troubling.

    "Individual responsibility" and "smaller government" are slogans, and to some extent desirable but they break down as conservative mantras when you consider that one of America's founding documents begins with the phrase "We, the people..." and when the most stirring speech delivered by an American president (Republican, no less) concludes: "...that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." When the Republican party (and the Democrats) becomes the party of big money and corporations and no longer represent those foundational values, the only patriotic thing to do is to stop repeating unAmerican slogans and for God's sake - to not vote for the bastards.

      Connor Kenway subsidies is paying farmers to keep goods prices at a competitive price. Tax reductions are called deductions which farmers get but should get more or even get a zero tax + subsidies if needed. States should also help as well, and also eliminate property or land tax for farmers

Raise taxes to repair a budget or gather funding for some service comes at the expense of households and their cost of living.     South Dakota farmer here, thought Trump would ruin our prices with the tarriffs, but the prices have gone up due to natural causes plus he has passed things to make people to consume more ethonol and corn has went up substantially, so is no loss for now. I have locked in grain prices for 2018 much higher than I could in 2017 or 2016. So I am pleased. It is funny how things work out

    The tariffs have not even be legislated yet. You cannot blame Trump for anything at this point. The reason the price went down is because if the president even sneezes, all of wall street panic sells their stocks. If they think they will lose even a penny, they sell massive sections of their portfolios. Perhaps we need more regulation on panic selling to prevent this.
    The EU has tariffs on many imports but is still a very strong economy. Whatever short term effects will be shadowed by the long term effects. In the case of the EU, those effects were positive.
