    This was one of the most fun we've had with this project.
    The Mosin-Nagant M91 type "3-line rifle" was Russia and the Soviet Union's military standard service weapon from 1891. The adaptation of this rifle is one of the reasons why the 7.62x54R cartridge is the world's longest-service cartridge. We cannot overstate the historical importance of this rifle.
    HUGE THANKS to Lonnie for loaning us the rifle and Chris from Small Arms Solutions for sending over the vintage ammo!
    Parameters: 2x shots per target from 150y to 500y, segmented per 50 yds. Shot with Russian surplus 147grain light ball 7.62x54r.

    I paid $75 for my 91/30 about 15 years ago at the local sporting goods store. For that price it came with 2 ammo belt pouches, bayonet, and cool double-chambered cleaning fluid/gun oil container. It has always worked flawlessly. I also bought 2 crates of milsurp Czech silver-tip ammo since it got great reviews for accuracy. Every time I bring the rifle to the range people snicker... until I start ringing the 450 yard gong with the factory iron sights. Worth every penny.

    We’ve seen a few guys ask about the bolt. We discovered that there was a burr in the chamber and when cartridges were fired, the bolt would stick upon expansion, thus requiring extra force to extract the spent casing.
    We will likely be helping Lonnie to remedy this issue with a drill and some polishing compound soon.

      I am wondering though, what you guys think about the original turned-down bolt handle on the sniper version. Is it a "well, you have to with an optic" only thing, or does it hold a straight up advantage over the standard horizontal bolt?
      Also, in regards to the ammo, to my knowledge by the time this ammo was made, the USSR did not use Mosins anymore as an issue rifle, in any role. Now given that this is 'regular' ball ammunition, and not the type intended for the SVD, what exactly was this ammo intended for in 1972? Cadet or conscript training? MG's like the PKM? In any case, probably not shooting a 1939 standard issue rifle at 500 yards without optics. Rifle and ammo age gap aside, that probably has an impact on performance too.

    • @GC_Rallo
      @GC_Rallo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@nightman4142 The sticky bolt is always caused by an issue with the rifle, it's not something inherent to the design though. I have several milsurp bolt actions that have had similar issues, it's definitely more pronounced in rifles like the Mosin that have the bolt handle in the center of the bolt body, are cock-on-open, and have a 90 degree rotation to unlock the bolt, rifles with bolts similar to a Mauser '98 where the handle is at the rear don't seem to be as tough to open when they have sticky-bolt issues.
      The main culprits are residual cosmoline in the action or chamber(remedied by thoroughly cleaning the cosmoline out of the gun), a stiff extractor(usually you can just bend the extractor out a bit to make it less stiff), burrs in the chamber(polish the inside of the chamber carefully and lightly), burrs on the extractor face(polish the face of the claw to allow the cartridge to slip over it easily), or in the case of cock-on-open rifles, it could be that your mainspring is far too strong, which is the case on most Mosins, you can reduce the strength of the spring by sanding the outside of the spring to reduce the thickness of the coils, or a more quick and dirty way would be to just remove 1 or 2 coils from the spring. If you're having sticky bolt issues, give these solutions a try!

      @leroyatleroys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I admit that it is kind of a gamble with Mosins. Some people swear by them and some insist that they are the shittiest rifles on the planet. It was the first rifle I had ever bought. The sights were spot on. I have never had to adjust them. The trigger was a little mushy, but it always fired true. I shot that rifle more accurately than most of the others I have owned or tried. I won’t say it is the best. But I will never sell mine and its design is very accurate for a very cheap military rifle. The prices have gone up now and they are harder to come by, so I wouldn’t recommend them as much these days. But the performance I got for only spending 150 dollars has given me a lot of satisfaction. It is a fantastic rifle, considering that it was only ever meant to be something that could be made quickly and is basically only supposed to work, not be the best.

      @@leroyatleroys Interesting posts. I'm a french shooter and want to buy a cheap bolt action rifle with iron sights, and even though a Mosin costs here around 400€, it seems to be still a decent option. For a Mauser, or any cheap plastic bolt action rifle with irons, I'd have to pay the double, maybe even more (yes everything gun related costs a lot here compared to the US). Without even talking about the price of ammo (28 cents/rd, vs nearly 1 buck/rd for pretty much all of the other rifle calibers - surplus 308 being at 50cents/rd though).
      > I have a question : is it worth taking a hex mosin for around 60 more bucks ? I'm mainly concerned by the quality of the wood, I want to avoid getting a split buttstock at all costs

    The Mosin Nagant was designed in 1891 and was the third design of a smokeless metal cartridge. That is only 26 years after the American Civil War. For those who want to knock the gun, all I did was very little bedding of the tang, one metal tube for the front attachment bolt to be metal to metal, slightly bend the original trigger spring that made it crisper like what the Fins modified with original parts, and corked the barrel to control the harmonics. The top two all time sniper confirmed kills were with Mosin Nagants, 1,005. Out of the top 15, seven were Russians and Finns using the Mosin Nagant for a total of confirmed kills: 2,836. And in the 1980s the Afghanistan people used the Mosin Nagant against the Russian Army with some authority. So for a gun designed after paper cartridge bullets and muskets, a good one still shoots impressively.

    I know this is 4 yrs old (at least) but I have to share. Back in May 2019, my late Father-In-Law (who passed in July 2023) gave me a Izhevsk 91-30 with a hex receiver made in 1927. It came via Century International Arms in the box (which I still have) with the bayonet, oil can, ammo pouches, cleaning kit, sling, etc. AND COSMOLINE....LOTS OF COSMOLINE! It took me 2 years to work up the nerve to clean the weapon and accessories. I waited until the hottest part of our Kansas summer to strip it down, made a pvc pipe tube to place the receiver and barrel in with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and left it for a couple of days. Placed the stock in a black, plastic garbage bag and left it in the sun in the back of my truck (with a black bed liner) to sweat. Took it out occasionally to wipe the cosmoline off and then put it back to sweat some more. After about 2 days, I stood it up in direct sunlight against a fence and let Mr. Sun do his thing. That took care of sweating the cosmoline out. I admit it was a mess and quite the ordeal but (in the end) it turned out really nice, although I can't say I would willingly do it again. LOL. I took a white crayola crayon and carefully filled in the letters and symbols on the receiver. Before I ever began this event, I searched all over the internet for any advice from others who had de-cosmolined mil surp rifles and purchased whatever reference materials I could find on the Mosin - Nagant rifles, their history, maintenance, etc. The research and purchases paid off and I not only own a piece of military history but I have a valued keepsake from my FIL to pass on to the next generation.

    Simple, yet brilliant weapon platform. The soviets done it right with that metric caliber. I own a few M91/30s and a M44A1 and are some of my favorites in my collection. I remember getting them back in the day for well under 100.00 USD. I shot plenty of old mil surp ammo through them with decent accuracy, but cleaned them up reloading for them. Great caliber to reload for, very similar to the .308, but slug the barrel out first due to worn out/over bored barrels.

  • @pd2865
    @pd2865 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm too old for open sights. So I got a extra bolt and had Boltman bend it, got a BADACE scope mount, a low riser extension, a SWFA 10 X 42 Mil rad scope, and I'm shooting out to 966 yards with Monarch ammo. It is one of my favorites rifles. I also did a trigger job like what the Finns did. And if the bolt is tight, that is a sign of a good shooting Mosin and I also put thin 1 inch strips of cork around the barrel like the Finns, and that tightened my groups to 1/2" moa. So here is my cork trick. I would run a fairly tight patch slowly starting at the breech. If I hit a spot in the barrel that seemed looser, I marked it and put the one inch cork dampener there, as well as one at the end of the barrel. I also made sure that none of the banding at the end of the barrel touch the barrel. I had bought a synthetic stock and free floated the barrel.But what I found, since this is a gun with a very thin barrel, it doesn't like to be free floated. But using the wood and cork and controlling the harmonics made this form mediocre to a shooter. I also pressed in one metal insert for one of the mounting screws, so there is no movement, Than I put a very small amount JB Weld in the tang so it is seated, and sprinkled a little saw dust to hide the cheat. I found neutral shoe polish acts a s a good release agent. So besides the scope, it looks bone original. If you are interested you can go to the BadAce FB page and see my rifle. And you can also see how I modified the front sight post to make it fully adjustable. Because the beauty is, I also can take the scope mount off and shoot it in military open sight competition too. And with that front post modification you can fine tune your rifle for better accuracy. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2459797620731727&set=2459797620731727&type=3&theater and I did put a pin and got rid of the bolt for the scope mount

    Great video and a truly great and historic rifle.... and sometimes the time was taken to make them extremely accurate, like the OG sniper versions and what the Finns did with the ones they captured. Russian military doctrine required bayonets fixed at almost all times, and Mosin barrel harmonics were designed with this in mind, certainly back in 1891. The rifle has barely changed since then. The M44 carbine version with permanent fold-out bayonet displays the difference in point-of-aim between bayo/no bayo most prominently. A lot of these old warhorses have quirks, and the bayonet is a definite factor in any range evaluation of the Mosin Nagant rifle. But enough of that, thank you for the valuable video :)

    • @dkk4575
      @dkk4575 ปีที่แล้ว

      @sidneybrissey5074, Shooting with a bayonet was a sabotage that history did not know. It is enough to look at the military chronicle to understand that the soldiers fired in battle without a fixed bayonet. In the Mosinka sample of 1930, the bayonet was made removable, but they did not give the soldiers a cover to carry it, leaving the shooting with the bayonet fixed. As a result, soldiers threw out bayonets en masse to lighten their burden, and fired past the target in battle, starting from a distance of 100 meters and further. This is not the only sabotage in the armament of the Red Army. And now it's the same story with the Russian army, drones are being sabotaged at the highest level, satellite high-precision equipment is being sabotaged, the communication, surveillance and intelligence system is being sabotaged. Even the weapons that are not used as it should be. Globalists need to fulfill the plan for the number of victims in the war.
      According to the testimony of SS Obergruppenfuhrer Erich von dem Bach Zelewski, before the invasion of the Soviet Union, SS leader Heinrich Himler at a meeting of the secret society of senior SS officers at Wewelsburg Castle revealed to high-ranking SS officers that the destruction of 30 million Soviet people was planned in the upcoming war. According to even the official modern statistics, the globalists have fulfilled the plan. And not the least role in this was played by the sabotage of weapons and communications equipment of the Red Army.
      The number of victims of the ongoing war is also planned by the globalists. And all politicians, special services and agents of influence work for the pyramid of Satanists, do everything to fulfill their plans.

    Right after I bought my Mosin, I took it to the range, but the bolt stuck. I showed it to a Russian guy that was thrilled I bought the rifle. He said he could fix the stick bolt. He laid it on the concrete floor bolt down and stomped on it. It did the trick and the bolt was opened. I was surprised that he treat my rifle like that but he said it was Russian and made and could take the abuse. He told me that I did not remove all of the cosmoline. I cleaned it two more times and it works fine now. I shot it three times at 100 yards hitting the targets. I immediately aimed for the 200 yard targets with him spotting and hit the targets. He asked me what I thought of the rifle and I told him that we need to set the range up for 300, 400, and 500 yard targets. He told me that I thought like a Russian. I paid $80 for the rifle and I should have bought a case of rifles and 10 tuna cans of ammo.

    The problem with the sights deviating as the range increased is because the sights were regulated for 1930-design type L lead-core flat-base spitzer, while that ammo is post-war-design LPS steel-core boat-tail spitzer, with the same weight and velocity but better ballistic coefficient.

Most of the time, you are not rotating the bolt far enough to clear the lug. Oddly enough, I have less malfunction than my Remington Woodmaster 4 which now likes jam cartridge in the feeding cone then rip the back off when it ejects. This results in me using my cleaning rod to remove the spent cartridge.

    Good vid, some of these really are good shooters. Many will require some tinkering though, parts were swapped around during the refurb process and can cause issues with a poorly fitting interrupter and rimlock, burrs and machine marks causing the bolt to stick, etc. You have to have some love for your Mosin and do a little work, but they can get the job done.
    They will never have an action like a nice Mauser simply due to the crappy design of the bolt, but there are issues you can fix pretty easily if you are having to beat the bolt open. In this case, it had a burr in the chamber.
    A lot of wartime guns suffered from poor machine work due to the hurry to get guns into the hands of troops. For most designs, these were mainly cosmetic issues. Due to the Mosins design, the hurried manufacture can cause more functional issues mostly due to bolt design and the fact it uses a rimmed cartridge.

    People hate on these but I bought one for 100 bucks from Big 5 when I was 18. Then next payday I got a can of that surplus for 80 bucks or whatever it was. It was my first gun because money, and my family wasn't into guns at all. It was a 1943 izzy and it had a bright bore and it cycled smooth, my friend who knew alot about them helped me pick it out. By the time I had the ammo I knew how to completely take it apart and put it back together, I spent hours doing it off youtube on my parents living room floor. I was infatuated. I still love the smell of cosmoline, I spent hours upon hours shooting that rifle in the desert and I was hitting steel at the range at 600 yards with it before long. I had been watching military history channel and mail call with R Le Ermy and all those shows since I was like 7, this was a buildup of a lust I had for firearms ever since I was a kid and now it was mine in my hands. Now at 28 I am a 1000 yard shooter,I have smashed coyote with Irons on my AR at 400, and I have won a few handgun competitions. It lay the groundwork for who I am as a shooter today, and I will always love them.

    Aren't the sights on Mosin rifles off-set to one side because the rifle was sighted with bayonet attached? So front post is moved to the right,

      Many war time guns have sight to the right, because of barrels twisted on too far. Pre-war guns have front front sights that are centered most of the time, and they shoot a tad right and high. The bayonet brings the bullet impacts down and center sometimes, depending on front sight height. :) th-cam.com/video/qTgYz5eYR4A/w-d-xo.html

    For a rifle that was built for $6.00 worth of materials , hey , 10 to 1 that chamber has a bunch of gunked up cosmo in it ,, or the bolt got swapped , i like the Sako And Tikka m-39 versions @ the m-44 carbines are shooters, not a swede mauser or a enfield ,but they used to be cheap,and you could buy tins of ammo for 39 to 65 bucks.

    A lot of these Mosin Nagant rifles came into this country in new condition, they were still wrapped in burlap and soaked in cosmoline. It is hard to get all of the cosmoline out of the chamber. When the riffle is fired, this cosmoline melts for an instant and cools gluing the cartridge case in the chamber. I removed the bolt and took a .410 shotgun brush and a piece of a cleaning rod, put this in a drill and cleaned the chamber for three minutes. This solved my Mosinka (Russian name for this rifle, pronounced mo-SEEN-ka) sticky bolt problem.

    Nothing like good old fashioned wood and iron. When I was first getting into guns I was all about the tactical plastic stuff but now I find super modern firearms boring. The Mosin gets the credit for that because it was my first surplus gun.
