  • There are lots of disused and never-used roads and bridges in the world. But the Road to Nowhere in Yate, in south-west England, does still sometimes have traffic driving on it. And crashing on it.

This feels like the sort of video I'd have made years ago: just me and a GoPro in a weird bit of infrastructure. Normally at this point I'd thank all the folks I worked with, but today, it's just me. So, uh, thank you, me.

Depending on what exact location in Yate you're talking about, AND what time of day you set off, that 40 minutes could be anywhere between 35 and 5 miles travelled. :D
I could get from the centre of Yate to the centre of Bristol in thirty five minutes....... On a Sunday morning at 6am, But the same trip at 8pm on a week day could take an hour and a half.
Anyway, "EVERY road in Yate is a road to nowhere"???? I think you're mistaken. Only a few roads go in Yate lead to Swindon. :D

Casualty used to film here quite often back when the show was produced in Bristol, but they stopped doing so when they moved to Cardiff in 2011. They came back in 2018 to film the scene with the tanker explosion; I remember we were sent letters warning us about it a week in advance.

Tom, this "Road to Nowhere" reminds me of the "City" of Craigavon in Northern Ireland. It was planned in 1967 as a "new city", but was controversial from the start. Beset by various difficulties (compounded by the Troubles in Northern Ireland), the project was abandoned in 1973. Today, Craigavon consists of a Shopping Centre, Hospital, council and private housing, some shops and a courthouse all surrounded by farmland but it's also FULL of roads that don't actually lead anywhere, but that probably would have led somewhere had the project been completed.

This is the town I'm from! Your info is probably more accurate, but the local legend is that the reason the road isn't completed is because they didn't get permission to connect the road before they started building. So they abandoned the project and all the leftover materials are buried on the common somewhere.
Also fun fact, when they did that explosion for filming you could hear it across the whole town!

This reminds me of the Foreshore Freeway Bridge, also known as Cape Town's Unfinished Bridge. Planned in the 60s, constructed in the 70s it was meant to alleviate traffic flowing into the city... But budget constraints broke the bank and it was never finished. Today finishing it would be difficult because there is a hotel, a Salvation Army building and several offices in the way. It's now used for any major highway chase scene and epic crash in films.

Here in Utah, USA we had a section of Interstate 15 that wasn't completed for years. North and South of it was the normal two lanes each way. For about five miles or so all the traffic was funneled into this two-lane road. It was called the "Death Strip" for good reason. Dozens of people died there until the government deigned to complete it.

I watched this road being built from my bedroom window, in 1973, by Gloucestersire county council. The town then became part of the newly formed Avon county council in 1974. Avon decided that the road had been built across common land without proper planning consent. The project was abandoned. As a teenager it became a great place for racing bicycles. we even built a land yacht to sail up and down. It has become an asset for the local community and wild life. I hope we can be preserve it just as it is.
