I would also say that it’s a prime example of humans placing wildlife in mortal jeopardy, even where we place them in captivity “for their safety.” Humans are the most self involved, selfish, dangerous creature on this planet. Failure to mind their own offspring led to Harambe’s death. The ignorance perpetuated by a clueless “higher intellect” species since that time only magnifies it. And that is the supreme tragedy here.

It’s because humans are such cancerous creatures, It is sad that there are so many out there who think “kill” instead of understand, relate, be compassionate. We’re suppose to love nature and defend it and help it grow. But we as a species that was given dominion have failed again.

This is a real problem. That is a large animal in a relatively small space. The gorilla naturally wants to move around. Even in a good zoo, the space to move through is relatively small. Ridicule? It is at least possible that the gorilla, on some level, detects and reacts to this as well.

Gorrillas are still losing their habitat at an alarming rate, it's only a matter of time before there are only a few left in the wild. It's unfortunate, but zoos are becoming the lifeboats for many wildlife species.

I don't see what the big deal is. These animals are incredibly intelligent. They knew that she was a baby and needed to be handled with care. Two small children have fallen into a gorilla enclosure at two different zoos and two different gorillas protected and saved those children. One gorilla barricade the child in refusing to let any of the gorillas get within arms reach of the child until he was rescued. The other gently picked up the child and began rocking him as she was walking over to the door and then handed the child over.
People often like to focus on prominently negative events because those events are those which are most often documented, and circulate the quickest. Isolated cases in which aggressive males or individuals target human children are an ever-present threat in these situations, as gorillas are known to assault their own offspring (or at least the offspring of other gorillas) at times. But those situations don't represent the norm. Would you consider it fair to consider figures like Hitler and other such aggressive humans as representative of the entire human species? I would say no. Remember instead that animals have as wide a capacity for aggressive deeds as humans have, and no species should be grouped under the category of "bad."

I used to think it was unnecessary but now that I know how easy it is to be injured or even gravely injured or killed, I guess you are right. A gorilla might not really know what he's doing or his own strength - and, who knows what was in the gorilla's mind. Still very sad though.

I loved watching the video of his daughter going to meet the gorillas years later. They had been put on an island to rehabilitate so minimal human contact. However when this gorilla seen her and smelt he, he seems to remember her and was hugging and giving signs of happiness. Was adorable 💜💜💜

This obviously isn't a parenting issue, she's clearly fine. He probably had defense plans as well in case of emergency. This is an issue about people stigmatizing an animal based on isolate incidents.

This really touches my heart, these animals are gentle giants but should keep in mind these people have been accepted into that particular family group of gorillas since the grandfather became part of their lives. Beautiful to show their gentle/loving side. ❤️

The most dangerous primate is not the Gorilla, it is us, the human.
This is a special and rare occurrence; for a gorilla family to accept a human family as an extension of their own.
However, we can never (and should never) forget that no animal can be trusted 100% to be safe.
Look at dogs, cats, snakes, pet hamsters etc. Cute lovely and loyal, but there's always that risk of them playfully snapping/clawing out of excitement.
What happens when a 300 pound gorilla gets too playful? A toddler potentially could be killed.
The gorrillas were family!!!! Kid was totally safe!! Perfect babysitters!! Also, Kokos another example of a perfectly harmless gorrilla. RIP.....Koko!

I am a firm believer in showing no fear with an animal. Your strength and confidence and compassion for the animal comes into play here. Yes some animals no way but I've seen many videos depicting the side of the animals that is soothing and gentle and very loving. Gorilla's are 97% our genetic equals which means they are 97% that close to what we are. And we are a bunch of crazy humans; think about some of the shit that some have done to other humans. We have to give animals credit, have faith. Animals are violent because of their needs food - sex - territory -etc... What are our reasons?

Such a polite kid. I've watched and observed all species of Gorillas (Silverback, Mountain, Western, and Eastern) and I have never gotten that close to one before. I actually am living in Uganda as of right now. I have only been here for a short amount of time, but haven't even been close to being that much of a distance from any species of gorillas. Truly amazing.

Nanny's are "unpredictabe" as well. And a zoo gorilla & a gorilla as part of a family are NOT the same. Any captive animal can go crazy, understandably. But, if the gorilla is given attention all day & treated as part of the family (& humanely), they are very loving.

In this circumstance I don't find it odd in any way, they are all family, they know the members. My own father was rather psychologically abuseve, but my mother was a wonderful, sweet person, so there you are. Wonderful work these people are doing.

They always talk about how dangerous these creatures are. Never thinking about how dangerous we might be to the gorilla's. Especially when we treated them like "objects that eat".
that's very nice. A bit risky maybe but nice. It's really great to raise children like that!! They learn to love & respect the animals :)

7/31/18.....Damian Aspinall & his English estate with gorillas & other wildlife is amazing. I can't believe his whole family lives/loves all these beautiful creatures.

Secondly, aren't crocodiles very different from gorillas which r mammals ?
I never knew gorillas could be this friendly.
Beautiful , this is a family unit . This is why the gorillas feel this and accepted the child . They go by feeling and intuition . Scent even .

For one thing, that gorilla was nowhere near 300 pounds.
In this specific case the animals were very familiar with those particular humans, and would obviously treat their child like any young gorilla. It's not like they eat their kids.
It’s pretty scary when encountering gorillas because they will move their face to your face and you don’t wanna push them away or move back in case it triggers them!!!!!!

I love gorillas, but I respect them enough to know I wasn't raised with them so I won't go in to play with them.
This is an exceptional instance where the whole family knows about Gorilla behavious and they would know when not to allow the child into their enclosure. People are over protective. Good on you man.

His father founded a private animal refuge near London, he had these great animals as his brothers & sisters, what a lucky lad!!!!
I had a pet squirrel one time, until he bit the hand that fed him, he died soon after that and 25 years later I still have a 2-inch scar on my thumb

DNA is significant in determining phylogenetic relationships.
There was somewhat recently a case of a three year old kid falling into a gorilla enclosure. A female picked up his unconscious body and carried him gently to the service entrance so the keepers could take him out of the enclosure before any harm could be done.
David knows that animals are noble and grateful so many times much more than human, believe me, I know.
And i think she has reasons to be happy for the inspiring example of what her father has done for the gorillas.
