BMW R 1250 GS Adventure Off Road Test Ride and First Impressions

- The BMW R 1250 GS Adventure is pretty much the quintessential adventure motorcycle. It's the model that started the whole ADV motorcycle craze and somehow it's also one of the few models that I've never actually had a chance to take out for a motorcycle test ride. Fortunately I was able to remedy that at the 2023 Touratech Rally and get out on a BMW R 1250 GS Adventure off road test ride with a group from BMW of Seattle and SoSo Motorcycles.
The second I got the 1250 GSA off road I was immediately blown away by how nimble it is. The BMW R 1250 GSA is a premium adventure motorcycle and that fit and finish is obvious the entire time you ride it. This bike looks like a school bus but handles like a Corvette. I'm not afraid to admit that my BMW 1250 GSA test ride shattered a lot of my preconceptions and I came away with a new appreciation for the 2023 BMW R1250GSA that I was definitely not expecting to find. My initial BMW R1250 GS Adventure review is an incredibly (and surprisingly) positive one.

I love when doubters get on a GSA and have a fun time.
I agree I road a Super Tenere for years and always though the GSA was over hyped. Then I bought a Pan America and it blew up at 5000 miles and was in the shop for months with Harley Eventually buying it back. I went and got a GSA Holly Crap I can never go back.
I mean... Nothning wrong with the GS, but its a gravel bike, not an offroad machine... Love my GSA, but its not an offroad machine, its a forrest road tourer...

Actually no, no pro rider or a GS in general rode any % of the NTR... Hmm, again i wonder why that is... But yea, im shure a modern GS has competed in some real rally seri... Oh no wait it didnt, couse its a GS, nobody and i mean nobody, no matter their skill level could ride a 250kg bike, with 19/17 set up, on a teleleaver suspension, with shaft drive trough and actual offroad race series. All the ones you do see GS conpete are smaller, day out rough challenges or week/weekend small rallies. Not once has a modern GS competed in an actual offroad rallie series. And you know... Thats where the best riders are...
I had the same misconceptions as you and last year went to a BMW demo day, after that I bought the twin to the bike you rode and traded my KTM 890R. 6000mi and a year later I haven't regretted it for a second. It's comfy, fast, handles like a sport bike in Dynamic mode, and is great off-road, the slow speed handling is unmatched. Plus, shaft drive is wonderful, and the times I've dropped it it's been easier to pick up than my previous Africa Twin. It's full of character, feels special and inspires confidence like nothing else. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the ride.

After years of KLR's, Africa Twins, and various touring bikes, I just purchased my first BMW. This past Saturday I picked up a 2023 R1250 GS Adventure Trophy. I, too, was a nay sayer, but I am now sold on it.
One of us! One of us! I used to be a GS doubter. Now, giant fan boy. You hit the nail on the head with your review. They’re also much more manageable on single track than you would think. I just put up a video of me taking my 1200 Adventure on some sandy blown out single track and it took it like a champ. I’d encourage anyone that’s curious about a GS to get out and try one!

Men ! Its been a few years since I stopped by Starbucks, but riding on my gs is a wonderful place to be .
I went from a Tiger 900 RP to a T7 to an ‘18 GSA Rally. Each bike had its own personality and reasons I loved them, but the GSA can do 90% of the off road I do on the T7, and pound the pavement so much better on longer trips. I don’t know why I waited so long to buy a GSA.
My 2007 GS is ancient compared with the newer versions but it is just as amazing!

As a GSA owner, I appreciate when someone who had preconceived notions can accept that they were mistaken. It's truly a bike that can and will go anywhere- dirt, highway, twisties, and yes, Starbucks too.
The tank is wide, but it's not as wide as the bars, and the bars are the same width as any ADV, so if you can get any bike though, you can get the GSA through.
And yes, fat guys like us need fat bikes. Stay excellent.
Yup. Went to Scotland and rented one for a 4 day trip last fall. Now I own a 2010 GSA. Friggin love that bike.
DIY maintenance definitely an option with the GS. Aftermarket diagnostics device are reasonable and plenty of online support.
Before I picked up my 2020 GSA I did spend some geek time looking into maintenance costs. The cost for maintaining the GSA is actually less than my 2010 Concourse. NOW that said, the amount I have spent on farkles makes up for it.
I bought a GS A a couple of months ago. I have zero regrets.
Test riding that bike was probably a $25k+ mistake lol once you ride one it’s hard to convince yourself anything else will do anymore. That’s what happened to me anyway.
Me too, lol. I just applied for finance😂 it gets under your skin😂 you stop looking at other models, and decide on having more GS’s in the shed. Boxer❤
Weight can work to your advantage. The suspension needs something to push against and heavier bikes have more resistance to movement when the suspension takes a hit. In a lot of ways that helps the bike soak up bumps that smaller bikes would buck. I love that about the GSA. That weight also translates into needing go a bit faster sometimes, and sometimes you carry momentium into situations that you wouldn't on other bikes and the GSA just goes through stuff like a tank.
BTW, I'm one of the crazy people that will single track a GSA. It's a little different skills but it will do it.
Maintaince is cheap if you learn to turn your own wrenches on any bike.
Can confirm, you probably wouldn't have felt the washboard at 50, they glide over them and potholes at speed.
My GSA's license plate is STRBKS, 100% embrace the stereotype.
I have a 2013 GS. Bought it new and have done a lot of highway just to go off road. Had no problems on the ISBDR last summer. The bike is more capable than most riders, including myself. Glad you enjoyed that big machine.
I’m on my first ever adv bike, and I started with a ‘13 1200GSA. Never looked back. Can’t wait to upgrade to the 1250.

FWIW I have ridden a GS in one form or another to Alaska and back and to the end of South America and back, from north to south on both islands of New Zealand, and around Europe. I've owned my 2016 GSA since, well 2016 and it's never been to a Starbucks! Overated crappy a$$ coffee, IMHO😊. I don't know about the 1250's but my 1200 has an Enduro Pro riding mode that adjust the ABS where you can be doing 60 down a dirt road and grab the brake hard and she'll just stop fast, I love that system! I just wish I had more time to ride her😢. Working makes things hard.

I had always hated the GS but recently I moved to Mexico and BMW was my only local option for real motorcycles. I reluctantly bought a GSA and at first thought it was a little dull and underwhelming. 10,000 km later I've come to absolutely love it for how well it handles pretty much everything. I have never owned or ridden another motorcycle that even comes close to the GS's low speed handling, and I can keep up with my street buddies and my dirt buddies (mostly). It's been super reliable too. A bike that's happy to earn your respect.

@@OneManTrail A new BMW car dealership called "Carmen Motors" opened recently in San José del Cabo close to Cabo San Lucas, BCS. Tucked away in the back part of the dealership is a full Motorrad store and they have a great service department too.

The R1250 GSA has long been my dream bike. I finally bought one last October, a 2023 in Triple Black. One thing I appreciate about BMW is the fact that there are options for short-legged riders (28" inseam) like myself. Mine is a factory low suspension model, and with the addition of a Sargent low seat, I can nearly flat-foot the bike. I have been very well pleased with mine. I'm glad you finally got the opportunity to ride one.
How tall are you? What bike did you come from?
@@cpprbusa9470 I'm 5'6" with a 28" inseam. I'm coming from a 2021 Honda Africa Twin, the base model with standard transmission, not the Adventure Sports model. I have a factory low seat on that bike, and I can get the balls of my feet down on it. But to use a Dorkism, the GSA is more confidence-inspiring.
@msims-yq3yd Short people unite! 😆 I'm 5'5" with a 27" inseam and had the chance to do a 1 day class at the BMW Riders Academy and realized I was comfortable enough on a low suspension model GS to go buy one. Also been a long time dream bike. I went with the Seat concepts low seat and I'm on the balls of my feet.

Both Bens love it... see my comments above, and even with the dakar im getting it lowered as well, but at my training a few of the guys were in lowered GS's and they had shortern inseams then my 28" and im 5'3" on a good day and those seats were way lower than my Dakar, even though I got the lowered seat , yup getting the kouba links 2"
I have an older 800gs that I have had for 6 yearsI just took it to Monument Valley from Montana. To this day, anytime I do something different or technical this bike impresses me. Anytime I think that something is just to rough for the bike, it just walks through it, and looks back me and says “is that all you’ve got?” Amazing bike

I have the same GSA and love it. The other thing you’ll notice riding it (besides Starbucks) is the vast majority of Harley riders won’t wave when they see you on a BMW especially the R1250GS/A 🤦🏻♂️

Your riding the best ADV bike on the market, I've owned two 2004 R150GS Adventure picked up used from the original owner with 17K on the clock I rode that for 30K more miles and sold it for A used 2007 R1200GS like it better lower lighter and 1200 is so much more refined than the 1150 came from 2nd owner with 25K on it, about 49K now. My 07 beemer is a lot easier to pick up than my 2017 AT well until I get tired then its time to camp.

Traded in my Dream 2020 HD Road glide limited to buy A 2022 Triple Black GSA....best choice I ever made! No regrets... and way more miles riden

Inspired by “Long Way Around”, I bought one. My first positive impression was the seating position (as is everybody’s). Comfort on the road was no surprise. I’ve now taken it off-road, up rocky desert staircases that were too scary to ride but did anyway. The GSA impressed me with it’s off-road suspension that is much, much better than anyone would expected from a 650lb bike. I’ve ridden (and wrecked) in deep sand (>3in) washes. That is the only place that the GSA doesn’t shine. It’s just too heavy to lift. I have either owned or ridden most every motorcycle avail and can say that the BMW GSA might very well be the finest motorcycle ever made.
I have to agree with you. Being a KTM 990/1290 rider who chuckled about the BMW 1200/50s, my 1st time on one at a Rawhide event changed my opinion. I was impressed by it's prowess in the tight and bumpy stuff. And while I'd rather be on my 990/1290 in the mountains and deserts here in the US, I now have a 1250 in Europe. There is definitely solid reasons why that bike is so popular. Thanks for a solid review.

Love your monologues! 😂. This is the second video I've watched recently of KTM rider (or T7) being shocked going from T7 or 890R to demo a GS 1250.
The funny thing is, I'm the opposite of this. Having only had a GS1200R and wondering what I'm missing? Your review is encouraging. Maybe I'm not missing anything? Haha. Still really want to try the new Tenere 901.

Just my experience, make sure you are riding with someone while off road. I’m sure you can pick up this bike no problem. But if the bike falls in a certain way, it may be a little harder to pick up. 2 people is always better than by yourself. 😊👌🏻

I'm not a Starbucks guy and haven't been one for decades. I'll make my own, even on trips, with my AeroPress. The only time my GSA will see a Starbucks parking lot is when I have a friend that won't compromise in meeting anywhere else. ;)

Rode a 2003 R1150 R for 6 years. My friend rode a 2016 R1200 GSA. I was surprised when I sat on it how wide it was, but didn't feel heavier than standard street boxer bike. Last year, I jumped on the ADV side and decided to start with a new KLR to tip my toes and learn my basics. But everywhere I look I see a GS. I'm paying my dues and learning the skills. Though, I keep advocating for mid size adventure bike, secretly I still dream of that GS. One day... Will be looking for 2010-12 R1200 GS, the pre-electronics and classic air/oil cool engine...
Glad you had a good time on it. I've owned 3, love the bike. I personally don't think it would be my bike of choice if I want to go a lot offroad, but yeah it is surprisingly good considering the size and weight. I'd say maintenance is not as bad as you might think specially if you DIY. You don't necessarily have to love the bike, but I think most people get surprised about how wrong some of those misconceptios are.
Really enjoyed the video. Glad you got to ride the GS. I have a standard (smaller tank, non-adventure) 1250 GS Rally (w/ adventure suspension) and it is dang near perfect for me. It does absolutely everything I need it to do and is way more capable than me off-road. I don’t look forward to picking it up when I drop it but that just encourages me to sharpen my technique. It’s expensive but I think it has earned its price. Plus, the GS has been good for a long time, you can always buy used.

This bike is in my heart, I ve tested 3 times already, infinite torque. I finally decided and bought the 2023 Africa Twin Adv ES manual, couldn't justify the 10k extra just to go to Tim Hortons every Friday...

I’ve just ordered my third GSA and I’ve never been to Starbucks or costa coffee here in the UK lol. My last one I even went off road a few times in some technical places it coupesrealy well ,I’ve just got a 701 for the off road stuff now lol it would be very expensive to keep dropping a GSA , I love that you really enjoyed the big girl on &off road keep those videos coming , I hope your buddy is recovering well from his broke leg ( another video I know ) 👍👍🏍🎉

Greatest motorcycle on the planet! I got 3 GSA’s in the power barn my favorite one is my 2012 which has 114,000 miles I put on it and it’s always ready to roll for that long haul trip without a fear of breaking down. My 2005 GSA has 80k on it and my 2016 F800 GSA has 25k on it. I always say they are the Swiss Army Knife of motorcycles. Although mine doesn’t know what a SBUX looks like but I can tell you that they know what -2 degrees is like, they know what torrential rain looks like, gravel and dirt trails look like, iron butt rides look like, snow looks like, 112 degrees look like, countless bbq spots look like, high elevations look like, curvy roads look like, Moto-camping looks like, multiple commutes to work look like. For the record I live in the mid-west in the rust belt where motorcycling is a seasonal recreation riding but I ignore that, they go out all year around without hesitation, somewhere in the power barn there might be a car but I can never seem to find it to take it out? Oh well! My point is that the BMW GS and GSA’s are the best motorcycles on the planet!! I forgot to say I own a 2022 Triumph Scrambler XE to that I’m testing on, I’ll have a full report on it when it hits 10k, It’s got 5k on it now. I believe 10k is a good point to give a good report on how the motorcycle stands up to a BMW GSA.
Same for my 2013 GSA (oil). It's the last one I'd part with.
R1250 GSA Rallye here. Most of the maintenance is oil changes and final drive fluid. They are both VERY easy to do. The “tech” has been unbelievably reliable on mine through sun, heat, water and dirt. Not a single issue. And, after you have the electronic adaptive suspension, lean sensitive traction a control and ABS…..you don’t want to do without it ever again. It all comes together to make a big, powerful bike easy to ride in any situation. I am mostly on road but I have really come to appreciate its comfort, load carrying and reliability as a great traveling companion. I was skeptical of all the fan boy reviews but anyone who rides one quickly admits that its a very special motorcycle. I do appreciate the large gas tank and the crash bars on the GSA.

I believe that most if not all GS haters have never owned one, although having owned 4 I actually believe the last gen of air/ oil cooled were the best and way better than the water cooled bikes.

In 2021 I just got my motorcycle endorsement and after researching bikes ordered my very first motorcycle. I lucked into a shop ordered 2022 1250 GSA 40th Edition Standard Suspension with just about everything. As a new rider the bike has given me lots to learn and a good range of what it can handle these past 2 years. No plans for extreme off-roading so I should be good.

Yep 4-5k worth of suspension does work well.
The only time I don't love my 2007 GSA is the two times I have had to pick it up. Mine weighs almost 65 lbs less than the 1250. Once you start moving the weight disappears. The hardest part is getting used to the feedback from the telelever front suspension!
I became a true believer after a wrong turn up a steep dirt road in Italy. The road turned in to grapefruit sized rocks and larger. I thought I was done for. But my 1200 GS grunt into it, the torque never failed to keep going up and up, over the rocks and holes. It was about 45 Fahrenheit outside and by the time I got to the top, I was dripping sweat. I never dumped it, it never stopped. I got back on pavement and started thinking, holy shit. I would have never made it up in anything else. Maybe some 125cc dirt bike but not in 500 pound touring bike.
Still waiting for that closed eye test and the impressions.

yes - it is expensive...yes Starbucks haters are real...yes repairs cost you...I've had mine for 2yrs with 45K on it - I know....but I take mine off road and hard....NEBDR, WYBDR, MABDR with other stuff - you can ride mine at ADV fest - ha...it's a great bike...see you there!!!

New Sensation - INXS. I picked up a '21 GSA in May '21. 21,000 miles later and I still love it as much as I did the first time I threw my leg over it. Heading into the mountains of NC/TN/GA/SC next week for 5 days. :) Glad you enjoyed it and the myths were debunked!! They're big pigs but so much damn fun!!
I've been considering a GS for a long distance bike for my wife and I. I was excited to see your impressions. The most I would do is a dirt road but I think the comfort and safety features as well as the cargo capacity is where it's at.
Pillion reviews are undrserved. I just bought a 1250 GSA, and with all the bags on my wife can go hours between stops while on the back. Honestly, the back seat is probably more comfortable than the pilots seat. Also, the way the power is delivered, and with low speed stability, this is by far the best bike I have ever ridden with a pillion. It still feels like there is an extra person back there, but the bike puts up much less fuss than anything else. It just doesnt get upset by the extra rider, ever. Also, no brake dive with a pillion is enough to sell the bike to me again. No helmet smacks anymore, ever. Not trying to spend your money, but go for a test ride with your wife.
Though my 17 GSA Is up for sale, my wife loves it over our 06 GS. Seat and ride comfort, less wind buffet. With the power, suspension and brakes, it's a two up flying carpet. She really appreciates the smoothness of the quick shifter. Surprised us when we hit indicated 120 on an on ramp without drama.
None of us with the GS or GSA ever thought we would get as far offroad as we have. It's like when you first start riding and you tell everyone, "I'm not going to ride fast like one of those type of motorcycle riders!" That only lasts until you crack that throttle for the first time. I've riding a lot of bikes a lot of miles. I would put my 1250gs up against anything (besides the cbr 1000 on a track)
I’m coming from a VStrom 1050XT, which has a very similar target market - I rode the GSA, and I can see why it’s nearly twice the price. That drivetrain, the suspension, fit, finish, stock seat, ergos. All the key things which you have to spend money on, you don’t have to with the GSA. (Maybe your standard handguards, stronger bashplate, rad guards, but that’s it) I can ride this for hours without taking a break.

I've rented one for a trip in Scotland. It is a great touring bike. I just can't get over the telelever. I never melded with that bike.
I've always said, those bikes have no business being as good offroad as they are. Honestly the 1200 Rallye was probably the best one made (adventure suspension with normal tank, no extra weight like the 1250).
