My outfits begin with 1 piece I am dying to wear...a jacket, shoes, dress, etc then build the rest around that. Each day is different but focusing on shoes only might be fun for a bit.

As I am stickler when it comes to footwear since they have to be as comfortable as any slipper (and require NO breaking in) I often when purchasing a garment think about what shoes would go with it. Also though I don't necessarily have my handbag and footwear always matching in color, I enjoy the hunt/challenge of finding something that does as when worn together I find it can elevate an outfit to the next level. With appreciation of your expertise!

I start with one major piece that I want to wear that day. Not sure where it comes from but I get a strong urge to wear a certain piece. Sometimes, it IS a pair of shoes that is that urge. Then I start thinking of pieces that would go with that.

Start with the shoes is a great tip, especially if you live where extreme weather is part of the context. I'm in the Canadian Rockies so depending on weather I pick specific boots, and then I want the rest of the outfit to feel intentional to work with them. Also, collecting a few winter coats over the years has helped so that I feel like I've added that great 3rd or 4th piece to the outfit, rather than just hiding everything underneath.

    Hello!
I really enjoy your channel, with a degree in Fashion and 2 in Art, you often speak my language.
To clarify Complementary Colors, they land ACROSS the color wheel from each other, hence the word “complete” instead of giving a compliment.
It means that the two colors together, contain all three primary colors. For example- YELLOW & Violet (RED & BLUE).
Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel.

I start with checking the weather forcast! Then I choose a top/jumper/knit/jacket/blouse and then bottom/pants/jeans/skirt. Also I could feel like wearing a dress then with layers under or over (to remove later).
I finish of with the right handbag, jewlery and appropriate shoes! I drive to work so sometimes extra shoes so I can change when I get there! When I leave the house I pick the outer wear depending on temperature and weather! Raincoat (burgundy!) lined with teddy at the moment!🤨 Wolly hat/beany, gloves/ mittens is a must in Sweden in February! But sometimes sunglasses too!😎

I start my outfits the same way as I design a room, I start with a pattern I love. It’s a lot easier to find solids that work with patterns than vice versa. Of course, I don’t wear a print in every outfit, sometimes just subtle, woven-in patterns/textures. I just keep in mind the footwear I’ll need for the day, I have enough selection to ensure that one pair will work well.

I would never start with the shoes!
Sometimes I start with the blazer that I want to wear, other times I start with the jeans or trousers. I might have an outfit in mind, but often find that I need to change the blazer say to one that works better and try on a selection of shoes to see which ones work the best.

I’m rolling out my accessories and colourful items, thanks for the reminder. Dopamine dressing in ridiculously trying times at present, in a rare couple of weeks where I couldn’t be bothered. If it’s clean, black, stretchy and air dried thoroughly as my tumble dryer is busted, on it goes. Could potentially be homeless in two weeks (I’m hoping not), so what accessories to keep…decisions…decisions?

Great ideas! I just have one question: what did you mean by the term complementary colors? In color theory, complementary colors don't sit next to each other on the color wheel - they're directly opposite. So, red and green are complementaries to each other, etc. Complementary colors are optically vivid; monochromatic and analogous colors are soothing. It wasn't quite clear to me whether you meant for us to choose colors that are similar to each other (analogous) or contrasting (complementary.)

Great tips of three (colours or styling elements). Shoes are also important for how I dress; some shoes work better with pants/jeans, other with a skirt or a dress. Shoes musr also be shosen after weather and comfort.
I also like some bright coloured shoes as a statement piece. Or in the winter I put on a bright pink barret or beene (dont know if I spelled them right?)
The texture tips os also great, especially if you go for the monocrome look.
Proportions makes such a different to me; I am average hight but quite curvy, so its easy to dress frumpy if not being careful about especially the skirtlenght! I cant wear any pleated skirts; it broadens my hips and make me look like an old aunt on some churchevent..
Also I cant tuck a shirt or a sweater in my jeans or pants; my upperbody just looks like a big round balloon. I rather wear my shirt open with a tighter top underneath, or a sweater with the exact (shorter) lenght for me.

I start with my pants, then choose the top & finally the shoes. I have a decent shoe collection, so I have flexibility. I have a very limited pants collection, though, as my weight tends to fluctuate a size due to medical issues. My pant choices are based on how I feel that day, so that's where I start. I own way too many tops. That's what I tend to buy the most of, as they fit me no matter what the day brings, where my pants...notsomuch.

Actually that is often the case (“bottom up”) but not where my styling choice starts, it’s a default. And I see so many people on the streets who make this critical mistake (mostly students)…but there are four things where getting dressed MUST start.
    1) What’s the weather forecast?
    2) Where am I?
    3) What am I doing?
    4) Am I “hands free”?
    5) WHATS THE WEATHER FORECAST????
Like it or not, my (casual) outside job (several km of walking) by default only leaves one styling choice when it’s raining & it’s gonna be HOODED raincoat, boots and (omg this was SO life changing…gone the days of those really awkward pull on overalls) FAUX leather pants! (+ layers). This must fit OVER the boot. So I had to play around with pant cuts/boot shapes etc & make sure I like how it looks because I have to be in it a looooooot! No more wellies over tights or skinnies that just get more soaked with every stride, runs down the legs & still come home with really uncomfortable smelly wet feet. At least this makes a rainy day job look styled rather than “I just threw on some rain gear…..”
Rainy day “business/elevated” means dress or skirt is required for me so the outfit starts there, meaning that raincoat (aka “trench”) if it’s raining needs to be LONG. On “slept through my alarm” days I wear the coat as the dress (can’t come off) so I need to make sure I won’t get too hot or cold so the materials I sleep in are key. Here my “just in case” outfit is decided before I even go to sleep.
But if I’ve got an event going on and running around the city (also in the rain) this is different. There I actually can go with the jeans, fun shoes, tops, pretty much anything I want because my hands aren’t busy so this outfit will include an UMBRELLA ☔️ There it is, the “default” so whatever I wear had better go with that umbrella. It sounds silly but, like are you gonna be folding that wet umbrella & throwing it in your Chanel bag or have it dribbling on your Balmain blazer (in one her words your “best dressed)? Yeah, it decides a lot 😅 I just save those things for a nice day.
And on the other hand if I’ve got a meeting or gonna be on stage, sure I can style the long beautiful wool coats but they only go from the car to the door. What’s under must be dress or skirt so again by default my outfit choice must start there (dress/skirt), and not actually the statement coat which may or may not become part of the outfit.
Gym/thrifting=athletic wear (yeah…I’ve seen weird things). Lots of driving/in/out of car=strEEEEEtch pants (dress/skirt/shorts)+something+something. Working indoors in 30,000 square feet of refrigeration=HOODIE (head, back of neck)+something+something. I could go on and on but you get the idea.
I mean not everyone is juggling 3-4 jobs but that’s how I manage to make the whole getting dressed bit a no brainer.
    (1. What’s the weather forecast? 2. Where am I? 3. What am I doing? 4. Am I “hands free”?)

I’m a wardrobe stylist if any of you lovely ladies are interested. Also, I purchase shoes and choose my clothing from there.

Girlllllll... it's definitely 💯 time you talked about doing that side part ! You're about my age and most certainly NOT OLD.. so why purposely go out of the way to age yourself ? You're stunning, and I've seen people repeatedly mention this and you respond a couple weeks ago. Bobs are killing it this year and you're definitely one that could rock it 🤩

Thanks for the suggestion but I like my hair a little longer and mostly because it suits my lifestyle. I know it's more flattering if I have layers and more of a style but I don't enjoy the maintenance. At 57 I've tried every hair style imaginable and this is where I've landed for now lol x

@Thestyleinsider. I'm 54 and my hair is half Way down my back. I'm definitely not feeling very "on trend" so to speak and especially since it usually ends up in a messy bun on top of my head 🤦‍♀️ I'm definitely on the fence, but I'm finding it long is just as much maintenance as shorter or even shoulder length just not so heavy 😝

@@Thestyleinsider. I have a side-part bob myself (variations of it for 40+ years now), but *I love your long, straight, center-part hair on you!* It seems part of your signature style, which is quite ageless and modern. And, yes, you *are* “stunning.* ❤️

Complimentary colors are the opposite on the color wheel not the ones next to each other. Otherwise I love your tips

You show some lovely images but they are nearly all young women that I cannot relate too, a twenty year old in an outfit looks amazing but I’m 62 and I’m trying to negotiate fashion appropriate for me and the images don’t help, sorry really don’t mean to give a negative feedback but some images of older women would give me confidence to style myself
