How Not To Look Older: Fashion Mistakes That Make You Look Older
Getting older is most definitely a gift not afforded to everyone but I truly believe it doesn’t mean you need to give up, feel invisible and look older than your years. I’m just about to turn 57 and thought I’d share some of my tips on how to look the best version of yourself at any age. For me that is what it's about. It's not about looking younger than my years - it's really just about putting my best foot forward and looking and feeling the best version of myself. That is one of the reasons I love following fashion trends. It gives me a chance to see what will be in fashion and decide what will work best for me and my lifestyle. Anyway, I'd love to hear what you do to staying looking and more importantly feeling great and if you have any styling or lifestyle tips that help you do exactly that. Oh and please let me know if you'd be interested in a video on what I eat in a day and my exercise regime.
Thanks so much for watching and see you soon.

I am ancient. My tips are take one good looking thing that you like to wear every now and again from what fashion dictates. keep pale colour close to your face, reflected light is most useful. Dont stint yourself if you like beautiful fabrics, wear them, keep a hold of making yourself look as good as possible. I really don’t see why we older ladies should adopt an ‘old lady’ wardrobe. Keep them guessing. Works for me. People will think it is all part of your character. Don’t actively try to look younger all over than you are. These are the secrets.
Wearing pale colors close to your face depends on your coloring. I would look washed out if I did that. What I recently did was get rid of all my black tops and bought some bright, saturated and dark jewel tone tops. These colors look so much better on me.
@@Momma_ALTotally agree with you pale colors wash me out I hate black on me especially close to my face I am 73 years young love fashion makeup wearing high heels l look frumpy in flats and I don’t pay a damn what others think or say 😊
Next time you visit LA try to visit Anastasia Beverly Hills Salon I found out reshaping the eyebrows give fresh new look Jasmine Kidd is great she also have a youtube channel.
I am an artist and photographer and light hues flatten out lines on a face and neck, dark tones deepen them and add time to your face. Your choice, however, as long as you are happy.
My choice as an artist - both fine and photo - and as an interior designer is to wear pale colours as little as possible in the winter as they accentuate the greys in my hair that are becoming a higher percentage now that I am almost 63. As an interior designer, I realize that each person's "right" choices are different and based on their own individual needs and not just because it makes them happy, although a happy face is much more attractive than the opposite and it far outweighs a few lines.
Great advice Leonie! I’m 69 and my word for 2024 is “color.” Less neutrals, more color for me. And not the “color of the year” suggested by the runway, but what looks best with MY skin tone and hair. I would add one more tip to your list, and that is for mature women to consider a fun and sassy hair style, which can add so much to one’s look. I love your channel!
Sounds great!! So pleased you love my channel x
I see you in teals and yellows
Quite right too. We have all this experience, seen fashions come and go and if we have any finer feelings at all want that flare up before the light goes rather than that damp loss of the light of our personalities followed by smoke. Carry on with pride and give these youngsters something to aim at rather than feeding their view that their superiority stance that they are the only ones who know how to dress and look beautiful. Let us give the lead, we have earned it.
@@rikkiharcourt3868Have you seen how awful, sloppy and drab most of the youth dress today! Yes, we need to show them what true, beautiful fashion looks like!!!!😊
One tip I bear in mind is to add one unexpected element to your classic outfit. It can be an unusual colour combination, or contrasting shoes or belt or handbag, or one item of jewellery. Keep the rest simple. I am 70
That is such a great idea! I love it! Thanks for sharing x
Would love to see a “What I eat, and how do I incorporate movement/exercise into my life” from you!
Okay that's great to know thanks Emily x
Something which helped me a lot is when I added a rolling rack to my bedroom. I isolate current items, based on the season/weather and what is inspiring me and put these on the rack. This way everything is right there every day and I dont have to dig through a closet. I keep rotating things in and out and its really fun. The 2nd thing which has greatly changed my health at age 64 is something I needed to do a long time ago. That is to stop using all processed sugar. It has been 90 days- extremely challenging! I can finally sip my coffee with zero sugar And zero sweetener whatsoever and enjoy it! I think the added sugar in tea and coffee will make your tummy bulge and add weight on us over 50 gals. (Artificial sweeteners are extremely toxic for our organs and brain so I never used those) I will eat dried fruit, fresh fruit and plain yogurt in moderation as this is what got me through the first 30 days. The ups and downs of going off sugar isnt easy but well worth it!! My tummy has gone done considerably.
The rolling racks are super useful right?! And congratulations on changing your health - fabulous!
@@Thestyleinsider. Thanks much;-)
I have a rolling rack too! So helpful
I find that many women around my age (57) look much older, are very unfit/overweight, let themselves go, they don't look after their personal care (hair, nails, make-up, etc.) and dress in comfortable shapeless clothes that age them. I used to be a member of a local club and everyone looked mumsy and didn't look after their personal appearance and style. It may sound harsh but I decided to remove myself from this group because I felt I was being dragged down to their level, they looked up to me, complimented me, etc. but they didn't inspire me in any way and I didn't want to be influenced by their negative, unhealthy, defeatist attitude. I have made an effort to make new friends and feel so much happier.
I do think it is important to surround yourself with people that are uplifting and positive. One of my closest friends is 80 this year and she finds many of her friends her own age get together and only talk about their ailments which she finds really depressing. She says she needs her "younger" friends to keep her positive and upbeat. I totally get what she means and sounds like you do too x
I think when women hit menopause they realize they are not going to have society dictate to them how they should look and act in certain ways anymore. They finally realize that life is too short and it’s time to find their true selves again with non judgmental women, who simply scrutinize them with their haughty attitude. Not all women care to dress a certain way, paint their nails continually, have Botox, be rail thin, wear make up all the time etc., etc. Guess what, you do you, and let other women be their true selves with open, warm, kind hearts, and accepting of others, blemishes and all, wearing comfortable clothes, because they can, and take good care of themselves in their own way, that works for them. One day you may need those strong, confident friends, when you are hurting, and the6 show up in no make up, and a track suit!
I agree I see it as lazy. I have always taken care of myself and probably as my husband says over dressed, but I always look great!
Thanks, 65, and I'm not done with fashion yet.
Perfect!
66 here and I love fashion more than ever!!
👍
Absoluetly!
Please …would love to hear about your nutrition and exercise!
Okay thank you - it sounds like I may need to create a separate video x
Very good video... I'm 52 years old, and I've always liked fashion; I have found that I get a lot of compliments when I wear updated versions of older trends like multiple brooches on a jacket (think 1980s) or on a knit winter hat, or longer dresses with platform heels. I like some tops considered fashion no no's, but I wear them with old jeans and boots to make them look relevant-ish😊. Have a wonderful day 💐
Sounds wonderful - thanks for sharing x
A great way to proceed. Second nature to take care of oneself is undeniably the way forward. A sloppy body and appearance is a bit of a showcase of what’s going on inside.
I'm very happy to be invisible to men lol. I'm 57 like you Leonie and 4 years ago I finally managed to stop yo-yo dieting/disordered eating/obsessive thinking about food thanks to a whole food vegan diet (mostly unprocessed, with no added oils or sugar). I lost half my body weight (and excess weight is unhealthy, ageing and makes you look worse in clothes) relatively easily and have maintained my slim figure ever since with no cravings or falling off-track because you can eat a LOT of food and this keeps you satisfied and full, I am a volume eater and this is not a restrictive way of eating. If anyone's interested 2 non-profit trusted channels are pcrm and Chef AJ, both with a great supportive online community
Thanks for sharing - sounds interesting x
I love this advice. As a woman in her 60s I agree that it’s important to keep moving and keep a positive attitude. I really enjoy interactions with people of all ages not just my age group. It’s keeps me young! I actually feel more appreciated and noticed now than in my younger years. We should all live our best lives.
Great advice Patty! I'd be lost without my friends of all ages. x
I'm 27 and still there are some people trying to scare of "my future ageing" 😅😂 I know there just evil and jealous but it's important to know that being free means to be able to expres ourself , our happiness and joy of life always❤
You have nothing to be scared about x
You will always encounter people like that! They try to warn you about the next decade ( at each one of them). I’m 80 and so far it’s been a beautiful journey! 💕
I look at fashion as creative and fun and have never been in a fashion rut. I'm in my 60s. My nearly 100 year old parent is also never in a fashion rut and has always been very fashionable. Moving with the times keeps one interesting and young at heart. And how one carries oneself, having strong confidence, and feeling fabulous also helps.
Now, to get dressed for lunch out with a friend. It's bright sunshine and to be 80 degrees today.Time to throw on my red suede cowboy boots, red short jean skirt, blue cotton chambray short-sleeved shirt and lightweight red sweatshirt with a design on the front. I'll also toss in my red, prescription cat eye sunglasses. Got to go!
Greetings from Los Angeles
You sound FABULOUS!
Thanks, Leonie. I just came home from lunch with a friend and lost track of how many people, of different age ranges, came up to me to either comment or give me thumbs up on my OOTD. It's important to wear one's clothing with confidence.
Greetings from Los Angeles@@Thestyleinsider.
I'll be 57 next week, so I'm right there with you! The way I try and look at fashion is to think of it as wearable art. Would you stop enjoying art just because you're over a certain age? Or should you only look at specific, more mature pieces of art? I say, whatever is fun for you and makes you feel great just enjoy yourself! I love to see your outfit inspiration and especially the more street style leaning combos which really resonate with me.
WOW I love that analogy - it really resonates with me and it's SO true. Thanks for sharing x
Great video! I’m 78, under 5 ft, 100 lb so I get it. I’ve got the basics covered, black, white, grey, camel, navy , so the foundation is good. I’ve started following Ellena Hue who does color theory and am embracing my love of warm colors. A bit. Well maybe more than a bit. I bought a Eileen Fisher Fuschia linen shirt, my husband like that, but I want the matching silk pants and he’s not a fan. Dilemma. My most obvious trend piece is the Bottega drop earrings, dupe. Your site is one of my favorites. Blessings
Perhaps your hubby simply can't imagine the silk pants and will be pleasantly surprised?
@@Thestyleinsider. Miracles do happen. 😉
@@lynnpetti3817 Ha ha!
It's important that I keep a minimalistic closet... I need to be able to see and wear what I love... Also, nothing makes me feel more beautiful than glowing skin...😊
I get glowing skin from a good diet, not expensive products: fruit, veggies, wholegrains, potatoes, mushrooms, legumes, small amounts of nuts and seeds, mostly unprocessed so no oils/added sugar either
So true!
I have to smile when I am reading the comments here, many are somewhere in their 50's, to me at 73, that's so young still. Maybe over 60 is older to me, but still youthful, even young adults notice older women look younger for their age, these days. Your advice here bars repeating, don't get me wrong about that. I would love to see a video of Leonie going thru her day, like going to the gym, stopping at shops where you live to browse. You are great at presentation with your upbeat personality and youthful looks.
Oh thank you so much Jane 🙏🏼
Thank you for this and for your attitude about ageing. I hate videos or articles about what older women should/should not wear and how condescending they are and make you want to set your closet on fire. I am 50 and I will continue to wear what I like but I have made a few adjustments with make up. I have a lot of neutral colors in my wardrobe but also a lot of bright colors and patterns which make me happy. 😊
Perfect! It really is all about what makes you happy x
I recently got turned into Jenni kayne and now own virtually all of their sweaters and got rid of almost all my others. They are truly the best! ❤❤❤
They truly are the best right? I'm a HUGE fan and have so many pieces on my wish list x
I have started wearing a lot of black and muted colors.. i used to wear lots of saturated tones which make me feel and look better but simultaneously I crave a simpler wardrobe w less fuss and zero decision fatigue.. i mostly take care of myself and i look as well as i can within my budget but ive also been a full time caregiver for my mom and recently lost her two days before Christmas 2023 so i know all this plays into my black and neutrals wardrobe choices.
Your clothing is expressing how you feel at this time. I personally appreciate the aesthetic of neutrals, which allow you to emphasize the other aspects of dressing, ie silhouettes. It also doesn't overwhelm your colouring. It's a more subtle thing and it can be very stylish.
Im 67 and I dont plan on ever becoming invisible😊
Fabulous 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love your videos Leonie !! I turned 61 last week and while still fairly slender my body completely changed at 58.I lost the elasticity in my upper arms & legs. This sent me in a tailspin of depression that first summer as I always loved sleeveless in the humidity of Boston. Now I just try to find more flowy good material so I feel good and stay somewhat confident. I refuse to dress like an old women. We don't have to !! Thank you for this video you always nail it ❤
Very good points in this video. I’ve always loved clothes and fashion so at 63 I’m still very much enjoying looking at fashion video, reading fashion magazines, and pinning outfits I want to try. I agree when you tell us to embrace the shape you have now. 😊
Love that!
Loved the content of this video, turning 51 this year and ladies just love yourselves we are so much more than what the media put out there. Thank you Leonie for supporting us and keeping us inspired.
So true and thank you 🙏🏼
I was once looking for shoes for myself and this lovely little young sales lady started showing me some “mature” styles. I told her no Thankyou, those are for grownups! ( I’m 61)😂 She looked at me like I had 3 heads.
I love that 😂😂😂
Im 49 and takes me couple of decades to dress my body type and not the clothes I like or wanted...makes life easier and gets compliments from time to time as well
Yay!
The best tip for me is not to buy anything new for 75 days, I spent so much money on clothes because everything was on sale after Christmas that maximum what I can afford is maybe basic Top😅Loved the video, you are absolutely gorgeous❤😮
Thank you and good luck with the 75 Style Hard Challenge - I've started and I'm really loving it. x
I say where what makes you feel good about yourself at any age. Don’t let anyone or anything dictate what you should wear. I’m in my 60’s and I love fashion. I wear anything I like in any color as long as my private parts aren’t exposed. 😂
Fair enuf 😂
Thanks for the excellent advice. We share a birth year and I, too, am fighting back against being ‘invisible’. 😂 I would be keen to learn what you do to stay fit and healthy.
Okay that's good to know thank you x
Me, too - would love to see your diet and exercise routine.
I can not thank-you enough for this video. You are an inspiration and make me excited to dress and feel seen. Id love to hear more about your routines. Have a great day everyone.
Thanks for watching Michelle and it looks like I may have to create that video. x
Thanks again Leonie for cutting through the BS!! I am going to be looking for my wobbly rectangle inspiration today🤩 I'm 57 and have used so much of your advice to guide me through this stage of life🙏
Wonderful!
Oh and I just realised what you meant about wobbly rectangle lol

Wow! I'm 62, Thank you I think I'm going to try that 75 a day challenge. Thank you, BTW I think you're fabulous 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Aww that’s super kind - thank you 🤩
You are already a beautiful women, so yes, let’s see how you maintain your healthy look😊❤
Thank you that's very kind x

Okay thanks x
You look and are fabulous. Thank you for your energy!
Thank you so much x
I’m 39 and you are such an inspiration to me, Leonie! You look amazing, keep going 🌷
I’m 52 and I’ll always be into clothes styling and fashion. I can’t Imagine not being into it. I love styling. Trying new things. Knowing what suits me. Hope I’ll continue !!!
I'm 42 and love your tips and content!
Awesome! Thank you!
Dear Ms Leonie,
We may not realize that here and there; adding or omitting an item may make us look....better or worse!
Thank you so much for those tips that (we may know) we ignore or forget!
You are RIGHT! Yes...to put EFFORT into our appearance; We do...get in a rut (or just being lazy ;)
I really appreciate that you shared the idea of the 75 styles challenge....coming from OUR wardrobe! So sustainable and responsibly conscious! Bravo! I was not aware of this nice...défi!
But mostly, thank you...for mentioning HEALTH! Respecting what we eat, we do, even THINK....to gain and to maintain our health; such a precious gift! and....BEING AWARE of trends, not to be a slave...
Your video is a gem, thank you Ms Leonie!!!
helene :)
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this one Helene x
I recommend surrounding yourself with friends from different age groups! My friends range from 27 to 85. Yes twenty somethings want to hang out with me. Why? I am interested in them, I am fun, I care and I never act like their mom. Wearing what makes me shine and never allowing anyone to dull my sparkle. Be authentic, and remember self care ISNT selfish.
Thanks
Love this video! I'm a 54 year young stylist in a boutique. I will be sharing this video with my customers!
I love Melissa Merrell, i binged watched all of her body shape classes...so good!!!
Yay! Thank you for sharing too!!
I am 57 and have an eclectic style. I have been watching TH-cam videos for fashion over 40 for over 15 years. Thank you for your hard work. You bring us relevant content every time 😊 I am more confident and comfortable in my body and what I love and feel comfortable in than when I was younger. I decided to wear everything in my closet this year. If I don’t love it I move it out of my wardrobe. I turn the hanger the opposite direction after an item has been laundered and is ready to go back into my wardrobe if it is staying. This way I will get to wear all the clothes I love 🥰
Thank you for this inspiring video! I do have some nice items in my closet, but I tend to wear the same things over and over again. I need to take a little time and put some outfits together and take photos. As far as being invisible, I think that everyone has something special about them. Just accentuate it! I'm almost 56 and for me it's my Texas hair! Always love your videos!
You're so right about accentuating your very own "special". I love that you do that with your "Texas hair" - perfect!
Wait 57?!? I thought for sure you were at least ten years younger! You look amazing!
Yes please share your fitness and health routine
Ok 👌🏽
Love your content! I’m 63 and decided to invest in a color consultation this year. My closet is in desperate need of culling with so many clothes that I just feel “meh” about. I’m excited to get a new perspective on what color combo truly work for me!
Amazing advice, Leonie, especially about fitness and nutrition! I've started weight lifting around the time I turned 30 and quality of my life (and as a result my love for all kinds of fashion, because I simply love my improved strong body more!) has improved drastically. We as women should incorporate movement and ideally strength training more as we age to combat our hormonal changes, not get arthritis, etc.
YESSSS!
You are a treasure Leoni! You give such good and practical advice!
Leoni, you look amazing👌 I love your style, make up and your hair. You have an inspirational attitude. Thank you for this and all your videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Aww that is so kind thank you so much for making my day xx
I am pretty fussy about who I listen to and watch regarding fashion (lol.. think I am an expert and been in the biz)... that being said, like like your advice but it is your personality and a kindness and caring that shows through that makes me watch your content. Keep up the wonderful work!
Aww thanks so much for making my day - that's a really lovely thing to say so thank you x
Thanks for a great video! /Marie from Sweden
Thanks for watching Marie!
Great video! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Good advice but many You Tube ladies advising older women how to dress feature only video clips of young women walking around or assessing their closets. It is always very young women shown in these video clips. Can't we see middle aged women or older women in these video clips for a change??
Sadly it's very rare that these sorts of clips are available - I'd def use them if the service I pay for offered them :(
my thoughts exactly...it could be that there are very few clips of women of a certain age (plus)...need to change this!
@@Thestyleinsider. You could be the perfect model!

Thank you Rhona x
As I’m getting ready this morning I see that you have a fresh video and I’m so happy to get that great inspiration for my new day! ❤
Yay that is great to hear Charlotte x
Thank you for your upbeat and useful videos. “Invisible” is a great descriptor and hadn’t thought of it that way, I’m not attractive anymore and it’s somewhat sad to no longer get random compliments.
It’d be cool to hear your healthy lifestyle tips. Blessings🙏
I love this video! Although I’m just turning 27 tomorrow (yay!!) I felt like all the tips can be applied to a younger audience as well! 🫶🏾 for me it wasn’t just like „looking younger“ but more „looking more put together“ 🤍 just ordered a bunch of basic staple wardrobe pieces and currently cleaning out my closet! 😁
Happy birthday!! 🥳
So agreed!!!❤
i love tou so much! thank you.
Thank you for this video, to remind ladies how to not allow to feel invisible. Personally I never felt that way. I always get compliments,… its more me , at 53 m looking at myself in the mirror and not able to see the 30’s girl anymore 😂. But that’s my issue. …. And yep those Channels who tell ladies how to dress after 40,50:60, it’s pretty depressing. First I don’t know how most on those channels, they show, short and frumpy women? Hello this is not 1970, 80, 90’s ,we don’t look like that. Many of us, still very fit and lean, and definitely not short lol.. it’s not that I am saying it’s something wrong was like our grandmothers in 1980 or 1990’s looked. Its not good or bad, its just different. So as long as we dress to flatter our bodies, with ratio more elegant than sexy ,we will never look invisible, or otherwise. What’s important in my opinion, that clothes would fit well, the fabric is important as well. When you young. You can pull out skimpy or oversized, not well fit outfits and any fabric, but as you age, it’s just not look good. And also how you carry yourself, no matter what age you are. You should walk straight, shoulders back, well you all know, how models, dancers etc… walking,🤪 i always did and will continue, no matter what age , another one to dress too young , well there is something like that, it does age us, when we are trying way too hard…. And yes eating healthy, and exercising. And no need even gym. If you don’t have time, or life circumstances, you can just do 1000 squats, lift some light weights, or heavy, it’s up to you what is your body type and what you are trying to achieve. I used to be personal trainer, so for me I prefer light weights more repetitions for lean muscle .And you can do abs anywhere even while I am cooking in the kitchen, I have low bar chair, so I use that as equipment, it turns so its great for abs and obliques muscle exercises . 😉. Also weighted hula loop is great. And yes, we need to turn off that noise, how the world / society expects us to look at 40, 50, etc… Have a blessed day🙏❤️
This is the exact video I needed. Thank you so much.
Wonderful tips thanks! 😍👍
Glad you like them!
Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy them (and your home is beautiful). I struggled a bit with this one because the slightly out of focus art over your shoulder was really hard on my 59 year old eyes!
Oh gosh so sorry about that!

Great!
great tips as usual. thank you Leonie!

Oh thank you! That is really kind x
Thank goodness for Quince, here in the States. Quality pieces at a fraction of the price of Jenni Kayne!
I've never heard of Quince before!
Quince are amazing, but I don't think they ship outside the US. I am wearing the dupe of the cardigan you're wearing in the video from them right now, but in black. Pure cashmere, but about $140 US instead of $495. I have bought quite a few of their pieces. Quality materials, sustainable, with transparent pricing.
Great video and very inspiring. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!

So true every word you spoke,i truly enjoy styling myself it makes me feel so good. Currently, im experimenting with Westerner boots and found them way more comfortable because sneakers dont always look right with every outfit.
But i get the snip toe to make the boot more stylish. No square toe because those look masculine
The pointy toe flats hurt my feet after a few hours, but at least i tried them.
Im inspired everyday.
Wonderful!
Yes, please elaborate on your workout routine!
