The best. Johnny Cash and the Statlers. I was sorry to see them leave the show but so pleased that they became such a success. I have all their albums (vinyl) and play them constantly. As far as Life's Railway to Heaven - my dad sat at the piano while we all screamed in his ear to the song. Great memories all around. Never to be forgotten.
Johnny Cash was always one of my favorite singers. I used to watch theJohnny Cash show on Wednesday nights. Life’s Railway to heaven is one of the songs that will be sung & played during my funeral service when it’s my time to leave this world. The song touches the heart, brings tears to the eyes.
Cash will live forever in the hearts of true country music lovers. He was able to cross over & meet wider audiences which just goes to show the talent & persona of this unique man. I enjoyed seeing him on numerous occasions & never saw a bad show.
There will never another session such as this and all the NGDB "Unbroken" albums. John Carter Cash produced another simular album after the passing of June and Johnny but the Dirt Bands Unbroken Circle albums are nothing but perfection of the masters. May they rest in peace one and all June,Mother Maybell,Johnny,Roy Acuff et all. Thanks for the posting a very well done contribution!
Mr. Cash's version of this song seems to give it an even more comforting and enlightening feeling. Johnny always had a way of doing that with every song he sung if it was one of his own or a cover of someone else's. Love's it.
The album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two" was released in 1989. It contained a veritable plethora of top-notch country/bluegrass artists. The best of the best. This particular song features Johnny Cash on lead vocals, with the harmony by the Carter Family. Mark O'Connor doing his usual virtuoso fiddle thing, Jerry Douglas doing his virtuoso dobro thing, and Earl Scruggs doing his virtuoso banjo thing. With the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band doing just about everything else.
This hymn is still performed in communities where retired railroaders are found. I have heard it sung at more than one funeral in Terre Haute, Indiana.
I first heard this song when I was watching a short video on You Tube called Passenger trains in the Shenandoah Valley, the song Life's railway to heaven was sung, the more I hear I listen to the song, the more I want have it played & sung at my funeral service when it's my time to leave this world.
Fantastic! Have loved this performance of this song for many years on CD and this is the first time I saw a video of the session. Although the video shows its technical age, you can make out the artists and the sound is terrific. Thanks to the poster!
Awesome!! Very good performance of a great singer. R.I.P. Johnny. And the banjo man Earl Scruggs and naturally the Carter Family. you're Always in my heart
Life is like a mountain railway With an engineer that's brave We must make the run successful From the cradle to the grave Heed the curves and watch the tunnels Never falter, never fail Keep your hand upon the throttle And your eye upon the rail Blessed Savior, Thou will guide us Till we reach that blissful shore Where the angels wait to join us In that train forevermore Oh, Blessed Savior, Thou will guide us Till we reach that blissful shore Where the angels wait to join us In God's grace forevermore
What a great behind the scenes video. Thanks so much. Our band "Rolling Thunder", just did this song as part of a two song gospel set along with "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, at a recent C&W show in Houghton, Michigan. It's always a great song to perform and to hear, especially when it's done by greats like Johnny and Earl. Thanks again for the video.
@pacnorthwesterner Psa 150:3-6 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
For years I thought it was Vassar Clements playing fiddle on this track until I saw this video and realised that is not Clements. but is in fact Mark O'Connor, a much younger but still great violin player. .
Eliza R. Snow wrote the original lyric's in the late 1800's and a baptist minister in Georgia supplied the chorus, his name was M.E. Abbey. The scripture it's referring too is from psalms 48:14.
The origin of this song is murky. Eliza R. Snow may have written the original lyrics, with M. E. Abbey (a Baptist minister in Georgia in the 1890s) supplying the chorus. There is a similar poem/hymn by Snow, called Truth Reflects upon Our Senses, which Tillman put to this same tune in 1909. HTH's.
That's a shame they didn't do all 4 verses and wasted time by just playing the instruments. It's like they were ashamed of the other verses or afraid people would be offended by them.

When Johnny Cash did certain songs ,it becomes the definitive version. This is one of those songs.

Earl is the man! I been listening to him for 50 yrs, trying to play like him for 35 years and he still blows me away.

Though a life with heart aches and troubles you can hear from his heart that he loved the Lord. I will see you one day soon Mr. Cash =)
This is great! Probably the best version I've ever heard. Boy, don't I wish I couldn't have actually been there!
My Goodness. "Show us the intro, Earl." That is the man who invented the style, folks, the great Earl Scruggs. I love this!!!

Johnny, June and Roy Husky Jr...missed and not forgotten any time soon.

I have heard many versions of song. This one is the best. Thanks for posting.
Very true.
If there is a chorus of angels, it would be those ladies singing harmony. Brings tears to my eyes still.
I've always liked this song , it was sang at my Grand-Dad's funeral back in 1954
Awesome!! Very good performance of a great singer. R.I.P. Johnny. And the banjo man Earl Scruggs and naturally the Carter Family. you're Always in my heart
I AM a man who loves Johnny singing his songs to bring back memories.
Life is like a mountain railway
With an engineer that's brave
We must make the run successful
From the cradle to the grave
Heed the curves and watch the tunnels
Never falter, never fail
Keep your hand upon the throttle
And your eye upon the rail
Blessed Savior, Thou will guide us
Till we reach that blissful shore
Where the angels wait to join us
In that train forevermore
Oh, Blessed Savior, Thou will guide us
Till we reach that blissful shore
Where the angels wait to join us
In God's grace forevermore
This was just beautiful.
You were unique, Johnny, and you were great. Bassjack

I haven't heard willie nelson, but, I have heard patsy clines, and it is good - it's got a great feel.
And Earl Scruggs, master of the 5 string, is still alive and still performing!
All I can say is .....WOW

"God, if you give us back Johnny Cash, you can have Justin Bieber"
I remember clips from this session, but never saw this song! Is this on DVD? I especially love Johnny Cash and anything he sings!
Old time gospel sound!
Can the video of Johnny Cash at his wife's funeral be found on youtube?
I would like to know what June meant by the Clyde Moody remark. He was a country singer in the 40s and 50s.
johnny you were a good man i miss not meeting you in person
They played this last night on deadliest catch for Phil's death at the end.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will the Circle be Unbroken"
any idea when this video was made? Absolutely awesome...thanks for posting...
I remember clips from this session, but never saw this song! Is this on DVD?
Zijn dit 2 opnamen door elkaar of zo, het ene moment heeft hij een bril op en dan weer niet.
That's a lousy trade. You think God is stupid or somethin'?
To get Johnny Cash back there's nobody left good enough
to swap!

where is this video from?
1983 recording for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's CD "Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Album 2"
Do You Know who wrote this song: "Lifes Railways to Heaven"?
The invitation of Matthew 22 has been issued and can be found at propheciesDOTorg
Receive! Believe! And ASK!!!!
that's debatable...
=D.
I do not think he will take the trade
@pacnorthwesterner Instrumentals are not a waste of time when you have some of the all-time greats like Earl Scruggs doing them. Shame on you!
3 Atheists MISSED the TRAIN.
That's a shame they didn't do all 4 verses and wasted time by just playing the instruments. It's like they were ashamed of the other verses or afraid people would be offended by them.
ahhhh...
