Great reaction to a great film! We have a 19 year old autistic son. He's higher up on the spectrum than Raymond, but he's definitely not high functioning. Seeing Raymond get his chance to drive the car hit me because our son is obsessed with cars. We know that he would love to be able to drive one, but that would be too dangerous for him and everyone else. As an alternative, we got him a Playstation and he "drives" via car simulator games. It may not be the real thing, but it's worked out to be a pretty good alternative. Thanks for reacting to this one.

The "Hot Water Burn Baby"scene changes everything for Charlie. For his father, he sent Raymond away because his father didn't realize that he saved Charlie from being scalded, thinking he let him get burned because of his disability, but their father partially resented Charlie for having to send Raymond away. He chose Charlie over Raymond in that moment, and that was why the car Charlie took for a joyride was so important to him and why he refused to let him borrow it and called the cops on Charlie. It was the only thing the father and the eldest son had together.
Qantas Airlines used the scene of Raymond naming their safety record as the start of their safety video for years.
Dustin Hoffman improvised in the moment where he leans his head against Charlie's when Charlie is alone with him before he gets on the train.
Was surprised the part where Raymond spells out Charlie's name doesn't hit harder for you though!(Spelling out the name means that he truly loves the person and is saying "I love you" the only way he can.)
In the scene where Raymond leaned over and touched his head to Charlie's, that was not in the script. That was an ad lib by Hoffman. He won the Best Actor Oscar for this role.

@@totomomo18 last time I watched that was high school when it first came out. It was a beautiful movie . My drama teacher wrote a play about AIDS my senior year and used that music.... such beautiful music! Every time I hear it in other movies and tv shows takes me right back to it.

I don't care what anyone says, Tom Cruise is a great actor. He arguably should have won an academy award for his performance in Magnolia, and he was brilliant in this film. I remember Michael Caine commenting on how Cruise didn't get his due on this film, and he didn't. I'm Generation X, and I'm glad I got to watch Cruise films as I came of age. Yeah he made a few clunkers, but all actors do. By in large he has done high quality work. Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July, Collateral, Magnolia, American Made, The Color Of Money. The list is long people. I don't think people will ever realize how good he's been until he's gone sadly. There are great actors who aren't movie stars, there are movie stars who aren't great actors. Cruise is BOTH, and that combination isn't as common as many might think.
Many people fail at differentiating craft and personal life, so they think "Tom Cruise and scientolobullshit, he's shit", when in fact he's one of the best and most successful actors in the world.
It's quite sad.

i think the issue is, its been so long since Tom Cruise has been in a movie where his acting skills mattered, arguably you'd have to go back 20 years at least.

Tom Cruise really showed his range with this film. And cemented it with Collateral. Not the breezy character from so many of his earlier films. Whatever his foibles, the man has actual acting chops.
Ahh. Eve the scene when Charlie finds out Raymond is the Rainman hits all of us like a ton of bricks. I am a grown man who has seen this movie at least 30 times and it breaks me every time. It's probably one of the top 50 written scenes in movie history. To me at least. It just touches your soul at the deepest levels.

One of the most heartbreaking moments of this was the moment where Charlie realizes the doctor is correct. Raymond can't differentiate between going back to Wallbrook and staying with his brother. Still, the road trip and the relationship built between Charlie and Raymond make this one of my favorite films.
It teaches a lot about love when you think about it, and how important love is.
Something to be aware of was the context of the times in which this movie was made. The general public had a vague awareness that autism existed, but there really had never been a legitimate attempt to present it in media as honestly and accurately as the writers and director did in Rain Man. For the many people who'd never been exposed to autism, this film, which absolutely exploded the year it was released, was kind of an eye-opening moment. In the early parts of the reaction, you were rightly very critical of Charlie's inability to understand or handle Raymond's autism...but 32 years ago, EVERYONE was Charlie. All of the public campaigns to educate the public on what autism is, and the tremendous research that has been devoted to it, much of that came AFTER Rain Man was released.
People often say, "This film could never have been made today," about films that are now considered culturally inappropriate. The same thing could be said of Rain Man, but not because of inappropriateness. The story of Ray and Charlie takes place in a time when all of these massive campaigns to raise awareness and understand of autism haven't happened. In 2021, Charlie Babbitt would have a much more nuanced, if still incomplete, understanding of autism when meeting Raymond, and all of the struggles through the first few days would likely not have happened...especially with the instantaneous ability to find information and guidance on the world wide web, which didn't exist in 1989 either. Still a beautiful story, though.

@@orangewarm1 maybe the fact that if you say you're autistic people don't believe you because you're "not like Rain Man". There are as many different types of autism as the number of autistic people. Some autistics are galaxies apart.

You wrote about the way Charlie treated Raymond in the first half of the film, "...32 years ago, EVERYONE was Charlie." Well that's a gross mischaracterization of the times. Just because there was limited understanding of autism in that era does not mean that all people were devoid of compassion when dealing with people like Raymond. The way Charlie treated Raymond was not unusual for the time, no doubt. But there were plenty of people, both in and out of healthcare, who treated those like Raymond with compassion, patience, and respect--even if they never heard the word "autism" in their life. Crikey, be more careful with your sweeping statements.

Great movie. Everyone was praising Dustin Hoffman, but Tom Cruise was equally amazing. One of my top favorite movies of all time.

This was back in the day when a lot of people had never heard of autism.
Cruise was a hell of a young actor, going toe-to-toe with living legends like Hoffman and Paul Newman and, in this case, not getting overshadowed by a "stunt performance" by Hoffman. Sadly for those who love good acting, Cruise decided to become an action star and more or less stay in that space. Nice react!
I agree with you about Tom Cruise. I just don't understand why he veered away from dramatic roles like Jerry Maguire or Vanilla Sky in favor of making countless Mission: Impossible movies.
It's anything but a "stunt performance"
Hey Eve. You're meant to hate Tom Cruise (Charlie) at the start of the movie so when he goes through his character arc and learns to take off his brother you feel the weight of the story.
Especially when Charlie finds out that Raymond is actually The Rain Man is the imaginary character from his childhood.
Such a heartfelt moment, it breaks my heart every time I see it.
Forgot how beautiful this movie is.

Hey Eve, this was one of the first big-budget movies to cover and explain in depth the condition of Autism.
After this movie parents who didn't understand their children's disability finally had an answer to their dilemma.
They could reach out to the correct professionals to get them help.
What an amazing and groundbreaking story that the Rain Man covers.
I cry every time when I watch the scene Raymond/ Rain man and then even bigger crying occurs when Raymond freaks out because of hot water- Every freaking time.
The Rain Man/Raymond revelation always hits me hard too! I think it’s just realizing how confused and hurt they both must have been without each other, and no way to express it, Raymond because of his autism & Charlie because he was so young. And knowing that they still remembered each other in some way and still had a deep love for each other.
Dustin Hoffman is one of my favorite actors, my favorite of him is Tootsie, very funny and great music in it, and shows how great he is. And for Tom Cruise, check out All the Right Moves, with Lea Thompson his HS girlfriend, the mother in Back to the Future. Great movie.

Rain man was based off of a real man named Kim Peek, would recommend checking out the documentary on him on TH-cam, sadly he passed in the last few years.
Dustin Hoffman won the Oscar for Best Actor for this, and received a very long standing ovation at the ceremony.
Holy shit! Someone doing a reaction to Rain Man! I love this film. One of my all time favourite Tom Cruise performances.
1988 was a stunning year for film - _Rain Man_ , _Die Hard_ , _The Naked Gun_ and _A Fish Called Wanda_ - you should watch all of those. Their scripts are all rock solid, film class proof stuff.
Tom Cruise: Top Gun 86, Rain Man 88, Days of Thunder 90, Far and Away 92. I just listed some random ones off the top of my head funnily enough they were in order. Oh yeah on IMDB checking what I missed in between and noticing A Few Good Men 92 that should be on the end of my list. But that is Jack's famous, "You can't handle the truth!" I'd say watch Far and Away as I love that one.

Thanks. I’ve watched very few Altman films actually. I’ve seen _Gosford Park_ but remember almost nothing about it other than the angelic Kelly Macdonald. And I’ve also seen _The Long Goodbye_ which I found slightly inscrutable because it was a neo-noir update of a detective I’d seen very little of in the first place.

I saw this movie as a young kid. It really impacted me and still does to this day. I remember watching the Oscars when Dustin won best actor and it won best picture. Phenomenal film.
Man, Dustin Hoffman studied HARD for this role. He got everything right about Autism, but didn't limit it to a single set of traits, because his character basically covered everything. The headbanging, the special interests, the monotone voice, the vast knowledge of niche and random things a neurotypical generally wouldn't care for for the most part, the creative mind of a person with Autism, the ultra-sensitivity to loud noises and even the routines...he just absolutely nailed it.
One of the best movies i've seen.
Its heartwarming to watch someone like you so in touch with your humanity/ feelings. Gives me hope in mankind.
I made up a comedy routine at the time in which Raymond worked at Burger King. The punchline was "Uh-oh, fifteen minutes to Whoppers. Uh-oh."

My nephew is just like Raymond’s autism. He never could learn to read. Tutor after tutor. School after school. Nothing. Finally, he learned. How? Watching movies. He loves movies and he learned by reading the subtitles. Amazing.

Raymond's character is based off from Kim Peek who is a real-life savant. When he reads a book, his left eye reads the left page and his right eye reads the right at the same time. So he can ready books ridiculously fast and has in fact read a huge library room full of books and remembers just about everything word for word from them.
I’ve lived with autism my whole life, I am nearing my 30th birthday in February, I’m an actor and I’ve got an amazing family. I love the movie Rain Man and I loved this reaction. Such an amazing film and story. Great reaction too.

I'm happy to see that you reacted at the moments of the film that really are the most emotionally impactful. Films like this which are heavily reliant on the story, the acting, direction, and music to bring the impact of the story are a rare breed in a world where we have super hero movies dominating the stories being told today. I also feel like the pacing in this film is something that isn't prevalent today either, it's all fast pace editing and cool visuals. Hans Zimmer's score is also gorgeous and definitely tugs on the heart strings for sure. Apparently when Dustin Hoffman rests his head on Tom Cruise's forehead, that was improvised. I also think that Tom Cruise was robbed of an Oscar win for this performance because he really showed his acting chops in this movie. He wasn't even nominated!

My parents took me to see Rain Man in a theatre when it came out; I was 7. The "hot water burn baby" scene made a big impact on me then, even though I didn't understand it. I still can't see it without remembering when I was 7, which adds another, personal layer to the emotional impact.
You are such a a compassionate person! Rain Man is one of my favorite movies. I've laughed and cried through it so many times but I've never seen someone else do it. When Charlie finds out that Raymond is "Rain Man" and you lost it 19:00 I lost it too! I couldn't stop crying.

I remember watching this as a kid (maybe 12yo?) with my mum and stepdad and just thinking Dustin Hoffman was absolutely incredible. I have watched this movie MANY times since, and Dustin never fails to blow me away. One the most incredible performances ever put on film IMHO.
Magnolia (1999) is another great movie with an ensemble cast of Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy,... :)

This movie is so perfect, because it describes the difference between narcissism (Charlie) and Autism (Raymond) so well. I wish more people would watch this masterpiece to understand that those two things are not the same, and it would also teach them to be kinder and more understanding to their fellow man. :)

Thanks for this beautiful rare reaction to this movie. This has been a favorite for me since I am 8-9 years old. Of course, at the time I didn't get all the emotional bits but it still captivated me for some reason. Then, when I grew up it only got better. I loved how you've reacted to the Raymond = Rain Man reveal scene. You crying almost made me crying in such short piece you could include. Please keep classic movies that are similarly rarely reacted in your reaction schedule now and then between the popular ones.

Another great Dustin Hoffman movie, but without the tears, "Tootsie"
One of my fave films of all time. Beautifully realized from direction to the amazing acting - yes Hoffman justifiably got a Best Actor Oscar (Cruise wasn't even nominated!) Barry Morrow - who wrote the screenplay w/Ron Bass - also wrote a TV film BILL with Mickey Rooney as a mentally challenged elderly man who was institutionalized nearly his whole life and is worht seeking.

hey Eve. Rainman (1988) was nominated for 8 academy awards in 1989. It took home 4 of them.
Best Picture, BEst Actor (Dustin Hoffman), BEst Director - BArrry Levinson, and Best Original Screenplay.
The movie was mind-blowing and the toast of the town.
The "Who's on First" routine that Ray keeps reciting, is a famous 50's comedy sketch from Abbott and Costello. You can find it on YT.

My son is autistic and he presses his head against mine to show affection….Every time I see “Raymond” do that to “Charlie” it makes me cry…

My son is a severely affected Fragile X Syndrome man. Fragile X has MANY similarities with Autism, so I can totally relate to Raymond. I remember when this movie came out, sitting in the theatre and the audience laughing at the things Raymond did that my son did too, it REALLY hurt! I felt like they were laughing at my son, something no one has ever did in real life.
I love this movie because so many things Raymond does or says that my son does and says too; the shoe placement, the table in front of the TV, etc. Unfortunately my son's development is much more limited than the way Raymond is portrayed.
My son is now 38 years old, still living at home and he is a very happy person. Everyone loves him. If it wouldn't be for his fits that come when we least expect them, life would be great with him!
What saddens me about watching this movie today is I too have another son who refuses to communicate with me. It's been 14 so far! Sad!!!

If you want another one that yanks tears out of you (for me anyway- and it is one of my favorites), "Playing By Heart" is a not so well known flick that has an amazing cast.
Fantastic movie, Cruise was superb in that you could see the full journey he went on, lot of truth in it
For so long in this world, you didn't have to understand or worry about anyone but you and your family. Things are starting to change though. More information gets out there via the internet and all sorts of mental illnesses and ailments are there for learning. So, it's cool that we're more accepting of mentally ill people, people with all sorts of disabilities. We're also moving towards a time where we need to be understanding of everyone, regardless of their health. I think in coming years we can expect to become more understanding of hateful people, toxic people, people like Charlie that just don't get it. Something you said stuck out to me, "He's playing the part really well, because I hate Charlie" That's very true, he killed this role and totally made it believable. In real life though I think we should be kind to people like Charlie, don't make them feel bad, because that doesn't accomplish anything. With someone like Charlie, a slow, kind and understanding approach can change their whole world view.

Charlie has grown up alone most of his life. And the only person he was close to as a child he believes is imaginary.
He's basically lost the feeling of wonder and imagination in his life in order to be a cut-throat business and salesman.
Now face to face with the reality that his imaginary friend. So deep. Just So deep.
The stuff of child's play is actually real breaks him down at the deepest levels.
This is why it touches all of us at the deepest levels. Telling us don't lose that childhood wonder.
Even as you go through the trials and tribulations of being an adult.

It just hit me while watching your reaction that Raymond produced that photo of him and Charlie so quickly. They both left the facility in quite a hurry - no books - no cards - or even no underwear - but Raymond managed to take the picture of him and Charlie. 😊

Rain Man was such a good movie, both dustin hoffman and tom cruise were great, especially dustin hoffman, this was his best movie :)
The doctor in the glasses towards the end is the films director Barry Levinson.
This film is absolutely amazing. 1 of my favourite ever!
"Rain Man" is a great film. I recommend another great movie about autism called "I Am Sam". It stars Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dakota Fanning. Hope you like The Beatles, Eve.
