      I just met him last night at the 50th anniversary showing of the movie--got to sit with Ted Neeley! What a great bunch of people. Bob Bingham, Kurt Yaghjian (Annas), Yvonne... super down to earth and friendly. I told Bob that his voice---sends me to heaven. He shared how he got into showbusiness and this film--it all seemed so sudden. 50 years later he still seems surprised by his fame!

    I had a girl crush on the guy who played Anas back in 1973....despite his high pitched voice. ~ I understood the genius though. He was balance to the bass voice of Ciaphus. The scene with all the high priests up on the scaffolding, looking high and mighty and condescending is perfect for that scene. I always loved how the modern day and ancient were merged in several scenes. The might of the tanks and jets, signifying the Roman occupation and power and the scene in the temple where sex and drugs were being sold along with other wares. -Defiling the temple, the house of prayer. -I'll always love this production!

      Both this song and "Could We Start Again Please?" were written after the original concept album was completed.
      Both songs are very good but this one adds more dimension to the plot than "Could We Start Again Please?" since it provides us with deeper insight into Caiaphas's motives and makes him seem slightly less villainous than before.
      A big part of what makes "Jesus Christ Superstar" so very powerful is the fact that there aren't any true villains in the piece (except perhaps for Herod, who's portrayed as being little more than an overindulged man-child). Every one of the main characters -- Jesus, Judas, Pilate, Mary, and even Caiaphas -- is deeply conflicted emotionally, desperately trying to decide what the right thing to do is and at the same time experiencing reservations about the decision once it's been made. Unfortunately, real life is like this a lot of the time. People make choices which they believed were right at the time but which in the end turn out not to be quite so good because they result in consequences which were unexpected or unintended and are undesirable.

    "while he starts a major war" the author of this libretto has divined the subtext of the gospels: beneath the ostensible, emasculated, Roman-friendly portrayal of Jesus as a bringer of peace, the truth is he was a violent revolutionary. Many historical revolutionary movements, most of them doomed to failure, have picked this up as well.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was written after the original concept album was recorded, along with the song "Could We Start Again Please?" This is probably one of the reasons why many productions leave it out (despite the fact that many productions do include "Could We Start Again Please?")
      I feel that this song adds a great deal of depth to the plot since it illustrates that both Annas and Caiaphas are just as conflicted in their own way as all the other characters are -- this makes them more three-dimensional and less villainous. Unfortunately, however, one problem (as I believe someone already commented on) is the fact that this song sadly doesn't fit that well within the flow of the stage show since it must come before "This Jesus Must Die." One way to make it work would be to change the order of the show, put this song before "Hosanna", and move "This Jesus Must Die" so that it comes after "Hosanna" and "Simon Zealotes."

    This song is an amazing addition and I LOVE it, but the timing is off and it stands out as out of place. At best, it should be in-between "everything's alright" and "this jesus must die", and at worst it messes with the introduction and impact of the Sanhedrin/priests. Always interesting to me that future productions/performances have kept,."could we start again, please", but not this.

    • @JohnDoe-gk7ok

      To my understanding, the Romans had conquered the Jews and the high priests had become amenable to them. Although men claiming to be the messiah was not uncommon at that time, the high priests were concerned about Jesus because he had a much larger following. So the priests were worried that Jesus’s followers would declare war against Rome. Annas here is trying to convince Caiaphas that Jesus is just a run-of-the-mill false messiah and that they should just ignore him, but Caiaphas rightfully recognizes that Jesus is different.
      However, the Romans actually didn’t care that much, and Jesus never intended to start a war.

    I can understand why this song isn't really used anymore. I like the music a lot, but doing this song and then "Jesus Must Die" would be weird. They'd be pretty much just saying the same thing again.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      One way to potentially get around this would be to have this song come right before "Hosanna" and then move "This Jesus Must Die" so that it comes after "Hosanna" and "Simon Zealotes." This might actually make more sense within the framework of the play because "Hosanna" and "Simon Zealotes" up the ante significantly for the priests and make their decision much more comprehensible (since Simon actively attempts to persuade Jesus to use violence).
