As an old tap dancer I will second the Stormy Weather dance (or any) by the Nicholas Brothers. Their combination of athleticism and dance is unmatched. Harold Nicholas is in a scene called “The Challenge” in the movie Tap from 1989 staring famous actor and tapper Gregory Hines and veteran tapper and entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. Hines and Davis along with Harold Nicholas, Arthur Duncan, Bunny Briggs, Jimmy Slide, Steve Condos and Sandman Sims give a master class on tapping in just a few minutes!

@@ACoustaDC I totally agree with this! I watch it goggling in awe at his talent and skill. To dance a beat behind the whole way through a complicated dance ... wow.
My number one would've been The Nicholas Brothers' performance of Jumpin' Jive from the movie Stormy Weather. I would have at least mentioned Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov with their Dance in the Movie White Nights. I would have for sure put in at least one Fred Astaire number, any one of them really, he deserved to be on the list for sure.
Umm....Gene Kelly was great both as a dancer and a choreographer, no doubt. But he didn’t dance that 17 minute ballet by himself. Leslie Caron was a wonderful dancer, and an actress in her own right. You could have at least mentioned her. And speaking of mentioning well-known dancers who are also actors, Russ Tamblyn was in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and West Side Story, just to name a couple. He deserves a mention, as well.

This list was very disappointing. So many excellent dances left off the list for example the dance from White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.
The "Broadway Melody" sequence from "Singin' in the Rain" with Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly is my favorite dance sequence of all time. Her incredible leg extensions are in a class of their own.
The traveling broadway show of Fiddler a few years ago was impressive. During the bottle dance, they had one sequence where the middle two dancers slid across the stage.
Right?! I mean... Many dancers were not mentioned in this special. This was lacking. It gave us a lot to wonder about who was left out of this presentation.
Ginger Roger's danced with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire many times. The difference in the men's led Ms.Rogers to say she was always bruised from Gene because of his very active style. Fred Astaire was like dancing on glass. He was very smooth.

Yule Brenner only had one lung by this point in his life having lost one to lung cancer. He makes the dance look so effortless but at every break he had to suck the bottom out of an oxygen bottle.
Fred Astaire's number of dancing on the walls and ceiling in Royal Wedding is one I think should be included in a video like this. Also, the Xanadu club opening number in Xanadu, they had roller skateing, 1940's style, and some modern styles all blended together. Awesome.
It is unforgivable to leave out the dancing from The Greatest Showman. Say what you will about the book and the performances, the choreography is astonishing. The dance scene in the bar is jaw-dropping. It featured some of the best contemporary dancers in the world at that time.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" where Jason Alexander is in the village ordering things because "The Prince Is Throwing A Ball". Blast From The Past with Brendan Fraser dancing a swing dance. 💃🏻🕺🏻
My partner and I attended a live performance of Cats in San Francisco when it was so wildly popular. She fell asleep. I was extremely BORED, but managed to stay awake. To this day I don’t understand it’s popularity!
Haha! Was so excited to see it in NYC and had to drag my husband. It was the worst show we have ever seen. I have seen a lot of the Broadway musicals and I don’t understand how Cats played as long as it did. AWFUL
As usual there's disrespect for anything in black and white. Meaning they leave out some of the greatest dances in movie history. In no particular order: Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell - Begin the Beguine (Broadway Melody of 1940); Busby Berkeley's Lullaby of Broadway (Goldiggers of 1933); Whiteys Lindy Hoppers (Hellzapoppin); and possible the greatest of all the Nicholas Brothers - Jumpin' Jive (Stormy Weather).
Points off Baz Lurman for not knowing how to film dancers. Fred Astaire figured out in the 1930's that you don't cut dancers off at the waist. Fred insisted that directors not do it to him and his dance partners. You show their whole bodies and how those bodies move through space.
Wonderful! A reminder of how fantastic those musicals were. Unforgettable - I sincerely hope. Someone - please put these on the latest saving devices. In fact, while you're at it, save the musicals - all of them - that these dance routines came from. Please. Do the future a favor.
I actually performed #9 the Bottle Dance on stage in Fiddler on the Roof. It was community theater and none of us were trained dancers. The scene killed every time and brought the house down. That was 20 years ago and I was 43.
An American in Paris, with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, was an excellent choice for number one. But I'm shocked and dismayed that not even one of Fred Astaire's amazing works was included in this list. In my opinion, Fred was the greatest movie dancer of all time...
There are so many great dance routines that it would have been almost impossible to mention them all. But if you made more I'm sure you could have a veritable immense number of videos. Thanks and please continue with these.
Tara Morice's work in that dance scene has always wowed me - given she was an actress rather than dancer, she delivers the routine with amazing flair! S.B. was always one of my faves as a kid, glad to see it still getting some love. It's undeniably campy & OTT like all Luhrmann productions, but still a lot of fun. The fact they had to rush filming of the final dance scene does show through a bit in the way the camera angles don't always make their performance shine 100%, but the emotion and adrenaline of the scene still very much translates.
Saturday Night Live, John Travolta dancing on those changing color dance floor disco scene. Wednesday dancing at the school dance doing some quirky weird dance memorable. There is nothing like a dam, South Pacific. Guys and dolls lady luck. Just to name a few more.
The choreography is always a treat to watch. I would try, and typically fail, to copy the energetic dance moves from "West Side Story" when I was little.
Swing Kids - The Sing Sing Sing dance The King And I - Shall We Dance They showed a snipit of it in the introduction, but didn't feature it. It may not have been the most complicated dance number in a movie but it's one of the most influential - Springtime For Hitler and Germany - The Producers Hair - Aquarius It's interesting because in the Milos Forman movie it was shot outside in a park, not in a perfect indoor sound stage. However great all these dance numbers are nothing beats the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. I've never seen it replicated. The Nicholas Brothers are number 1.
Fred Astaire should have been included. One of the most beautiful dances is Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen when they dance "The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing" in White Christmas
I loved this trip down memory lane. However, too many great dancers were NOT seen or even mentioned. Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye, Sammy Davis, Jr, James Cagney, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, John Travolta, Ginger Rodgers, Gwen Verdon, Ann Miller, Rita Hayworth, Cyd Charisse, Martha Graham, Audrey Hepburn, and Ann Margaret to name a few.
I read somewhere that Donald O’ Connor ended up in the hospital after filming Make ‘Em Laugh. In between him throwing himself around like that and being a heavy smoker, it took a toll on his body. Crazy stuff. 😳
Hey, you left out Saturday Night Fever? This film and its dance sequences launched the restoration of dance to the world audience. Made them actually go to dance lessons and mega-populate discos world wide.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be like Paula Kelly, and met her later in my career, and hung out with her at one of her favorites spots several times. I'm just glad I got to thank her in person for inspiring me so much! I loved "Cool" from West Side Story. That to me was THE best dance sequence from a movie musical. And the camera work, enhanced it. Rather than make you feel like you didn't quite see what was there the way quick cut filming is done now. Such as with the "Roxanne" tango. A two hour long music video is frustrating.
Agree re the editing issue! We've swung from the often-overly-static camera setup of the 1950s dance numbers to constant cutting that IMO often obscures the skill of the actual dancers? (Similar issue exists with filming & editing in many fight scenes, where extreme intercutting can completely obscure story flow & devalue the stunties' incredible work.) In terms of music videos themselves, I seem to notice a real shift there, too? Seen some incredible recent made-for-YT MVs that are amazingly powerful, but often the editing is so fast that the full impact of the stunning costuming & choreography gets lost for me? There seems to be a requirement for at least 3-4 major scenarios with complete sets & costumes in a single vid too, where e.g. in the '80s one story would be told throughout. (Albeit sometimes dragging out the different camera angles on a single set way too far, to the point of boredom or cheesiness.) It feels like the video creators have perhaps lost faith in their audiences having more than a 30-second contiguous attention span...?
IN the movie "Singing In The Rain", O'Connor having the day before filmed that incredible scene, "Make Em Laugh" found out that the camera malfunctioned and the whole number had to be re-shot. He told Gene Kelly who did most of the choreography planning that it was no problem.....so he did it all again. After the number he was very sore and had bruised ankles. Being a 4 pack a day smoker, WOW! What stamina! He made 6 "Francis The Talking Mule" movies of which he was paid $30,000 a picture. "Singing In The Rain" he made $50,000. And for "The Buster Keaton Story" of which NO ONE ELSE could have done, he got $200,000. I've seen it and it's GREAT!!!! He could sing, dance, do acrobatics, compose music and orchestrate.
WHEN, will Elvis ever get the recognition he deserves? He was so far ahead of his time! Considered the first music video, the dance sequence in Jailhouse Rock is perfection! And Elvis, well many have tried, but there are truly no adequate words to describe The King!
How on earth could you leave out that last number from Grease??? Or the iconic Liza Minelli Mein Herr from Cabaret??? Or any of the awesome Fred & Ginger numbers??? Or any of the incomparable Nicholas Brothers??? Or anything of Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, or the glorious Eleanor Powell??? Jimmy Cagney as George M Cohan??? The children doing "So Long, Farewell" in Sound of Music??? Part of the problem here is that you combined stage & film -- that's apples & oranges... & shortchanges both!!!
Moulin Rouge is a masterpiece of a production and that tango was MASTERFUL.That should have been #1. It unfurled the full spectrum of love, dashed hopes, and broken hearts and the pursuing rage. And following clise behind Fiddler, then Chicago. Amazing😊

I would have put Dirty Dancing at the top of the list! That finale number gets my heart soaring every time!
Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr's waltz made me a fan for life; I was just kid when the movie was released. 😊 ❤ 👏
More like a polka
You and me both. Loved that waltzing.
So many good dance routines are missing from this - the one I was waiting for was Footloose.
I agree, Fred Astaire was great. I am wondering abt 2 ommissions..Thriller w Michael Jackson, and anything from the Greatest Showman.
I actually performed #9 the Bottle Dance on stage in Fiddler on the Roof. It was community theater and none of us were trained dancers. The scene killed every time and brought the house down. That was 20 years ago and I was 43.
"The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" - White Christmas
That is one of my favorites. Danny Kaye was amazing.....
An American in Paris, with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, was an excellent choice for number one. But I'm shocked and dismayed that not even one of Fred Astaire's amazing works was included in this list. In my opinion, Fred was the greatest movie dancer of all time...
How about ANY dance scene in Hello Dolly!!!!!!
Saturday Night Fever!
West SIDE story - américa
Footloose - Footloose
Fred Astaire
The Nicholas Brothers iconic routine and please mention Ben Vereen from Pipin
There are so many great dance routines that it would have been almost impossible to mention them all. But if you made more I'm sure you could have a veritable immense number of videos. Thanks and please continue with these.
Strictly Ballroom!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
So glad that made the cut.
Me too , love that dance , loved Paul Mercurio
@@ahleenlupo7421 the movie is Saturday Night Fever. Saturday Night Live was a comedy show
I agree!
Saturday Night Fever NOT Saturday Night Live
Nothing impressive there
3:15 "lead player"? That was Ben Vereen, y'all!
I was surprised his name was not mentioned in the clip.
the "Leading Player" is the name of the role.
If they don't even consider the Nicholas brothers, I'm not surprised they don't know Ben Vereen.
My favorite is in Victor/Victoria, Hot Jazz and the last Matador dance.
There are so many. We need to see more.
The choreography is always a treat to watch. I would try, and typically fail, to copy the energetic dance moves from "West Side Story" when I was little.
You can't double up on Kelly and skip Astaire. Girl Hunt Ballet (basically inventing Michael Jackson...)
Thank you! A top 20 list should have 1 if not 2 Fred Astaire numbers.
Be fair, Michael has already released Bille Jean, Bad, Thriller and Beat It before he released Smooth Criminal and did his homage to Fred Astaire.
Kelly was twice the everything that Astaire was. I have studied them both and Kelly makes Astaire look like an average Joe.
Swing Kids - The Sing Sing Sing dance
The King And I - Shall We Dance They showed a snipit of it in the introduction, but didn't feature it.
It may not have been the most complicated dance number in a movie but it's one of the most influential - Springtime For Hitler and Germany - The Producers
Hair - Aquarius It's interesting because in the Milos Forman movie it was shot outside in a park, not in a perfect indoor sound stage.
However great all these dance numbers are nothing beats the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. I've never seen it replicated. The Nicholas Brothers are number 1.
Oklahoma ... Nichols Brothers anything... Fred Astair anything.
Fred Astaire should have been included. One of the most beautiful dances is Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen when they dance "The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing" in White Christmas
It’s a hard knock life from Annie should be on this list.
Ms. Mojo couldn't find a single Bollywood routine worthy of this list?
There have has been nor will there ever will be another like the late, great, Bob Fosse.
Wow, not naming Ben Vereen in the Manson Trio number from Pippin?! "The lead" instead of calling out a great dancer?!
The King & I really no mention!?
Shall we dance was on the list, but with a very low ranking, not the one it deserved.
Thank you, I really enjoyed this X
Growing up in the theater, I've performed in most of these performances on the local level. I love to see that they are still being presented.
Bye Bye Birdie
Having done the bottle dance in a high school production many years ago it was so much fun.
i did it when i was in middle school! everyone thought the bottles were velcro but we worked for months were able to balance them
That's is super-impressive! 😲
I read somewhere that Donald O’ Connor ended up in the hospital after filming Make ‘Em Laugh. In between him throwing himself around like that and being a heavy smoker, it took a toll on his body. Crazy stuff. 😳
Apparently they filmed it but something went wrong with the film so he had to do it all over again 🫣
Shame you left out Vera Ellen's dancing in White Christmas... Her dancing was way over the top!
(Similar issue exists with filming & editing in many fight scenes, where extreme intercutting can completely obscure story flow & devalue the stunties' incredible work.)
In terms of music videos themselves, I seem to notice a real shift there, too?
I love Donald O’Connor in Singing in the Rain so much! Will have to check out Buster Keaton Story 👍
Tough list to make, but eliminating duplicate entries such as Chicago in favor of classics such Astaire & Roger’s might be an improvement.
El Tango de Roxanne is stunning song and dance routine
The king & I dance you showed a clip of at the beginning of this video is Epic
WHEN, will Elvis ever get the recognition he deserves? He was so far ahead of his time!
Considered the first music video, the dance sequence in Jailhouse Rock is perfection!
And Elvis, well many have tried, but there are truly no adequate words to describe The King!
I think the Hairspray finale deserved to be one of the 20.
Brides for seven brothers and west side story have a dancer in common, “Russ Tamblyn”
Amazing😊
