    Q: Suggestions on how to keep things in focus with a mirrorless or DSLR as movement happens and through the zoom range? AF vs MF. Hand held vs follow focus. Etc?

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of keeping things in focus, it depends what you’re trying to accomplish. If you have multiple subjects moving around that all need to be in focus, you need to push your aperture up to like an f7+. If you have one subject that you’re following around and want everything else out of focus. The more contrast there is around your subject the easier it will be on your autofocus so maybe push the shutter speed a little. Be careful though because going too high will make the camera movements look jittery. Otherwise, the more space your subject occupies in your frame the easier it is also for your autofocus.
      I filmed sports in manual focus for years before the technology caught up so it is a valuable option. You will make mistakes no doubt but so does your autofocus so it all evens out. I would suggest using an external monitor with peaking if you can though.
      Follow focus with sports is not very practical in my opinion simply because your environment changes so quickly that it’s hard to coordinate between two people the framing and focusing. That being said, I never tried it so take this advice for what it’s worth.

      @@BeyondTheGame_E Awesome thank you! Ps. Any chance you might have some pointers on camera movement when filming B roll for things like cinematic highlight reels? I'm just delving into film so all the peripherals like tripods, monopods, gimbals, etc, are way over my head/somewhat overwhelming. Haven't seen a tutorial on basic camera movements (and the necessary equipment) with a dslr for sports yet but i'll keep looking!
      Thanks again!

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I tend to have static camera shots and not use movements that much. There’s already so much movement in the frame, there’s no need for the frame itself to move as well. I tend to either film hand held, or on a tripod and try to get wide and close up shots of everything I film.

    Hi Ed, you mentioned in some tutorial about using Autofocus... I've been recommended and read about using only manual focus when filming football (not soccer). What's your opinion?

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I filmed manual only for years. Not by choice but because my camera didn’t allow autofocus to work when filming slowmo. So it can be done, it’s just one more thing you have to worry about while filming. But at the end of the day, it really depends on the quality of the autofocus on your camera. If it’s too slow, it’s best to stay with manual because auto will always be adjusting and rarely keep focus on a moving subject for a long period of time. But if you have a fast autofocus that can keep a moving subject in focus quite easily than why wouldn’t you use it?

So far the Canon has proven to be much faster AF - however this when shooting stills. The 70-200 Sigma "draws" excellent images. My friend and I just got student deals for adobe and macs and we want to make hype reels and “bored films” kind of videos but we don’t get our own footage. How do you get the footage from on the court like cutaways and videos of the players on the court? We want to make basketball and football videos and we see the other mixes on TH-cam have those clips all the time. Also, what the best way to collaborate using premiere pro? Thanks in advance!

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the mixtapes are just game footage downloaded from TH-cam or recorded through a third party app. The close up shots are mainly from the replays after a great play and the highlight reels at the end of each quarter.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also with Premiere Pro you can create a team project which allows more then one person to work in it simultaneously. But I wouldn’t recommend it for what you’re doing. Just work on individual videos separately and compare after, that’s what I’d do.

    Since this was filmed 2 years ago you may not see this. But if you do here is my question. In 2 years phone camera technology has advanced. I only film my sons sports teams using my phone from the stands. I am now using a Galaxy S22 Ultra. Would you be able to look at the specs on it and tell me if I can make quality videos with it? As much as these phones are I'd like to use it as much as I can before i run out and spend a ton of money on a camera. I don't make money on my videos, and probably won't anytime soon, if ever. Thanks for any feedback.

    • @BeyondTheGame_E
      @BeyondTheGame_E  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not necessarily about the specs. There’s no optical zoom on a phone so, filming from the stands you’ll either get a super wide shot all the time or a very grainy close up. But like you said, it’s just for fun so if you enjoy the results there’s nothing wrong with that. But to answer the question directly, no, your videos won’t be as high quality as they would be if you were filming with a mirrorless camera and a long lens.

    I did this exact thing when it comes to making money creating sports videos. I attend a local university that I already had many connections with. Through these connections I was able to basically "tryout" by creating some videos for my schools football program and they loved it, especially because no one had put in much effort into making the content that I do. Through this I was able to work my way up to becoming an official student assistant and be in charge of just about all social media content creation for our team, I have been doing it for just about a year now. My dream is to use my experience and education I have gained and continue to gain at my school to become a creative media director a big name university not too far from me. If anyone would like to specifically know the schools I have mentioned please feel free to ask. If anyone would like any advice on how to get started in the industry please feel free to ask as well.

      @@cfwproductions It really depends on what you want to shoot and which one you're more comfortable with.
      For example, if you're just shooting video, your camcorder would be fine if you more comfortable with it, plus with the camcorder you will always be in focus. However, if you also would like to shoot photos (because I do as well) and get a more high quality look, I would recommend the d3400. But ultimately it's what you're more comfortable with.
