The older you get, you go to less weddings and more funerals. To the point every one you knew has died and you go to your own funeral. It's ritual acceptance of life and death. It's the mortal coil that cannot be transcended.

Steve Winwood was a musical prodigy as vocalist ( sounding like Ray Charles at 16- there’s video! ) and pianist and guitarist. He wrote “ I’m A Man”.
Also was the founder of Traffic ( tons of hits- Dear Mr Fantasy; Cant Find My Way Home; ) and supergroup Blind Faith. Jimmy Paige considered having Steve as his lead singer for Led Zeppelin! He’s had an amazing solo career as well. Check him out on YT at his old country estate in England singing and playing his guitar sitting by a huge stone fireplace. The voice is unchanged!

Basically, a couple of guitar chords.....a washboard...a bass made with a washtub and a broom handle.....American influenced music....it’s a hoot. check it out. Steve Winwood has an incredible voice, and the two solo hits you mentioned, "Roll With It" and "Higher Love", were in constant rotation on the radio in the '80s.
This song was also covered by The Blues Brothers, including in their self-titled movie (which you should watch, if you haven't, it's huge fun and packed with great music), which caused some blues snobs to complain that the Spencer Davis Group couldn't be blues, they were BRITISH. But, as you read, their blues cred was in fact pretty solid.
My Obscure Reaction Request won't actually be too obscure, but I doubt you'll know it. In keeping with the blues and rock feel, I request you react to Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five singing "Saturday Night Fish Fry."

one of 'the' songs of that age, a classic. You will see musicians names popping up in different groups as a lot of bands evolved into other bands as the cream rose and the average went to their alterative lives as insurance brokers, merchants, full time hipppies etc: Was a new time of music and youth growing into it, a time of experimenting, a time of life that made memories and scorched brain cells.

It was one of the best evenings of music of my life. It turns out, Spencer Davis was a really good lead singer on his own, but if you have Steve Winwood in your band like he was in the 60s, there's no real sense in having anybody else sing. Thank you so much for doing a tribute to him, he was a fine musician.

Old grandpa here, who remembers Spencer Davis, and this song in particular, very well. I was in the US Air Force stationed in High Wycombe, England from 1966 until 1969. When this song came on at the Airmen’s Club ( 3 Quonset huts merged together), even the field mice and roaches would get out on the dance floor. The other song that got the same response was “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, by Dusty Springfield.
That was when Radio Free Caroline broadcasted from a boat just outside British territorial waters to avoid licensing restrictions. I won’t bore you further, but that’s a bit of musical history you may find interesting. Thanks for doing the oldies.

I have a fond memory of meeting the band in '66 (IIRC), just as their first single Keep on Running was starting to shoot up the UK charts. They were a little surprised to find two 13 year olds waiting to get their autographs when they rocked up in their old battered van to our local Blues Club that we were too young to attend...
Spencer and Muff in particular were incredibly sweet to us, inviting us in to watch while they set up for the show. Stevie (as he was then known) was all of 17 and seemed to be hanging back and scowling at us disapprovingly, but I did read later that he was very shy, so perhaps that was it. Muff (bass player and Stevie's big brother) told us a funny story about how their Mum said Stevie should go with him and the band out on the road because 'it would keep him out of trouble'! (Maybe the first and last time someone's parents thought being in a rock & roll /R&B group would keep their teenager on the straight and narrow...) :-D
Spencer tried hard to persuade management to let us stay for the show but to no avail. Still, his thoughtfulness touched us and now, 50 years or so later, the news of his death last week has me feeling unexpectedly emotional.
RIP Spencer Davis and thank you for all the great music and for your kindness to 2 young fans all those years ago...

They ran parallel to the Beatles in 1960s...#1 hits before the Beatles, #1 hits while the Beatles were at their peak, #1 hits after The Beatles split. Other reactors have been blown away by the lyrics, the musicianship, harmonies and Frankie Valli's voice. I think you will be, too. If you're looking for a good bass line, start with "Beggin'".

You seemed nonplused by two significant names mentioned in the Wikipedia profile:
Christine McVie (Christine Perfect) has been the female singer/songwriter/keyboardist for Fleetwood Mac since 1970, before, during and after Stevie Nicks' tenure with the band. The only members of Fleetwood Mac who have more history in the band are founding members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (Christine's ex-husband). Popular songs written and sung by Christine McVie include "Don't Stop", "Say You Love Me", "Over My Head", "Hold Me" and "You Make Loving Fun".
Bill Wyman was the only official bass player for The Rolling Stones. He joined the band in 1962, two years before their first album. After leaving the Stones in 1993, he has never been formally replaced (all subsequent bassists have been considered employees of the Stones rather than actual members). While Mick and Keith have had storied histories with drug abuse, Wyman's vice of choice was sex. When the Stones compared notes on the number of female conquests on their first US tour, the others ranged from zero (Charlie, who was married) and seven (Mick, who as lead singer had the best access). Wyman reported a score of 120. At age 52 he married an 18-year-old he'd been with since she was 13.

Steve Winwood appeared in concert at The Spectrum in the 80s. The band stayed at The Cherry Hill Inn here in NJ (Across the river from Philly). My brother in law was a cook in the restaurant. Came out to say hello to Winwood and told him the meal was on the house (Typical: Giving a free meal to a millionaire who can afford to pay!). He said Winwood couldn't have been bothered, not the friendliest celebrity to stay there. The music he was putting out at the time was pretty good and worth reacting to.

Stevie Winwood was 16 or 17. I remember it - around the same time as the Stones

The first hit I remember of his was "Keep on Running." It's fun listening to it again.

Although I am a very fit and healthy 66-year-old in London I am experiencing the very gradual demise of so much of my being. I was lucky enough to grow up in London in the Mid 1960s when it was the World Capital for Music, The Arts, Photography, and Fashion, and once the 1970s began I started going to the first of 100 Concerts there. Life is going Full Circle: I saw Londoner Phil Collins in Genesis first-ever Top Spot and he now can't play anymore.I followed fellow South East Londoners Peter Frampton and David Bowie. Peter has had to retire. David has passed and one by one all my 1960's/Early 1970's heroes are leaving the Stage, sometimes literally. Spencer Davis R.I.P. Keep On Running To Heaven Man...

Skiffle is a type of music where you took the Major chords in the song and turned then in to the 7th and 11th of that chord in a shuffle type beat. The Quarrymen (Early Beatles) was a Skiffle band

The Spencer Davis Group was popular enough in their day that they even starred in a Beatles-type movie called THE GHOST GOES GEAR, in which they are staying at a haunted castle. Lots of their music.

Have you ever listened to Traffic? You need to hear The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys, another Steve Linwood group.

I saw Spencer Davis Group live two weeks after Steve Winwood left the group. Though we were disappointed, the show was still pretty good. SDG had a number of now forgotten hits that did not feature Stevie. These songs charted in England and internationally but were not big in the US.

Yep, Winwood with the unmistakable voice -- although sounds like he has a cold here. Check out "Higher Love", "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" and other work with Traffic

Winwood wrote this and I'm a Man. Believe he was only 16-17. Winwoods brother was already in the group and they needed an organist so he suggested his younger brother and history was made.

Skiffle was a pre-rock genre in Britain. The Beatles started out as a skiffle group under their original name, The Quarrymen.

When Steve Winwood left to form Traffic. Spencer Davis Group continued with Spencer himself as lead singer. They added extra members but rejected a certain Reginald Dwight who wanted to replace Steve. Reginald later became known as Elton John! If you want a great example of Spence himself singing to a groovy tune check out "Looking Back".
