The air stone was for surface disturbance to stop green surface algae forming :) after a couple of months its not needed as the tank balances and the algae wont form.

My veiltail betta's fins get raggedy too. The parameters are fine so I have doubts that it's rot. I just keep an eye on them if they might get out of hand; maybe treating him with meds but I'd rather not. Glad your guy doesn't have fin rot.
Seems like the biggest issue people bring up is water parameters in dirted tanks. Bet your stems are doing the trick to eliminate anything developing. How's the PH in that tank? I was thinking the use of root tabs temporarily with the low level plants might help til they reach the nutrients but hasn't taken too much time so maybe not worth the effort!

      Cheers mate :).
Yea I have meds in my supply stash incase rot sets in but I watch him every day, I think its just one of those things where i'm paranoid so I see things that arnt there.
The pH of that tank was holding at around 6.8 but I havent been checking much recently in all honesty as it was so consistent.

Shaun, I really like the look and layout of this tank. If I were to recreate it, would would you suggest that I do differently that you wish you could have done?

I'm thinking of setting a similar tank up to this one soon using all the lessons I learned from it.
I would use a single stem plant in the background, probably Limnophila Sessiliflora but Rotala Rotundifolia would work well too.
I would keep Staurogyne Repens in the mid ground of the tank but half the capping layers depth so its around 1 inch deep so its roots can hit the soil ASAP.
I like the idea of Helanthium Tenellum Green in the foreground as the eleocharis takes ages to grow. The issue with Helanthium Tenellum Green is its hight as it can get up to the same size as Staurogyne Repens so it will need trimming.

Cheers, thanks for the advice. If you decide to go through with a revised version of this setup, I look forward to it.
