The whole gimmick of this song is that it's trying to get a story beat to hit like a truck, and it succeeds perfectly.

This track is emotionally loaded. Because of that, the vocals are more insinuations of lyrics rather than anything concrete.
As for the confusion and stress you felt from listening, I'll leave you with a quote from one of the routes: "You always worked best under pressure, buddy."

Rusted Pride is kind of unique in the AC6 sound track, as 6 has this kind of darker synth oppressive tone to most of it's music. But this song has some of the weirder more dissonant vocals and electronic sounds of older Armored Core games scores namely 3-4's era (Songs like Thinker from AC4, or No More Cry from AC3 come to mind). Thematically it feels almost like a purposeful clash of the "new" style of 6's score and the older games, with bits of the soul of earlier AC games kind of breaking into 6's world. Given the context of where this song pops up in your playthrough of AC6 it actually makes perfect sense.

'Mechanical, confusing, cluttered, intentionally stimulating the stress response of the brain', yep that sounds about right for Armored Core.
No seriously, I can't understate how well you actually nailed this. Armored Core is a trip. It's confusing, frustrating, hope crushing even, both in universe and in gameplay. The odds are horrible, life seems cheaper than breath at times, it's a mechanical cycle of die and kill and die and kill, detached, yet somehow visceral in stark violence and struggle to survive.
Since you don't know the series, you might know some of the other products made by the developers.... namely Demons Souls, Dark Souls (1, 2, and 3), Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Sekiro... they've got a bit of a reputation from them.
But Armored Core was making people break their controllers in frustration long before those things came to be, and now it's what their makers have returned to. And this song among many of it's more classic ones, plays close homage to the hell we so easily fall in love with that it depicts.

And yet, somehow, the human will and heart still shines through, even from people who are supposedly so chromed and cut up that they are barely human. The will to choose, to be free, seems to drive everyone forward, even in the dark. Rusty, especially, during his fights, he literally goes full Heroic Second Wind, as if he is the protagonist, and honestly, he could be treated as one, in another setting, in another world.
Honestly, in Armored Core, everyone is just trying to find their way around the dark and shitty world they live in, whether it's throwing their lot in with the big corps, trying to rule or take over them, fight for own benefits as a merc, or just struggling to survive... and even taking the fight to the corps. We all gotta find a way to survive, somehow, no matter what it takes. In a way, those who are able to choose and act on their own free will, and not allow the world around them to hold them down and fit them into a mold, is unique and powerful, because they can be the seed of change.

@@CatharsisYT If you're interested I would definitely recommend checking out the second version of this song. The song itself is a theme for one of the characters in the game, and I would definitely say this song is indicative of their current outlook on the setting and those around them. While this version of the song is more chaotic with no harmony, the second version of the song comes up at a point in the story where there is more focus, and it definitely reflects that. It's also got some amazing drums in it so I would definitely recommend checking out to compare the two versions.

  • @Flora-L1

You've nailed it perfectly. And the song is played alongside two different battles that you will encounter based on decisions you make. It will play when you liberate the planet of Rubicon, and fight along side a character named Rusty. It sounds hopeful, grand, the final push to save the people who call this planet their home.
And it will also play, should you decide to set the planet ablaze, and take on Rusty head on. Despite your choice to turn on the Rubiconians, he still calls you 'Buddy' and understands your decision. And in this scenario, though the song is exactly the same, it has an entirely different feel. It's painful, sorrowful, and paranoia inducing. Knowing your about to kill the only person who called you a friend and saw you as an actual human being.
Armored Core 6 is a fantastic game, well worth the wait. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry during both the Liberation and Destruction of Rubicon, far more emotional strain than I thought I'd ever get from a game

    Rusted pride,
    on the outsides.
    I can fly!
    I fly high!
    Watch the sunrise, until dawn.

Lyrics for the song are hard to make out, but here they are:
    Rubicon cries.
    I will come.
    I take flight,
    beautifully.
    Over land,
    and the mountains.
    Rusted pride,
    on the outsides.
    I can fly!
    I fly high!
    Watch the sunrise, into dawn.
    Rust away, lost to wind.
    Watch the sunrise, into dawn.
    I fly high!
    I fly high!
The song is themed after a character by the callsign V4 Rusty, hence all the rust in the lyrics. And I think it plays during one of the boss fights with him? So the way it structured to make you feel uncomfortable I believe reflects how you must realize that what you're doing is wrong in the moment of the fight, and trusty just giving his all to try and stop you.

      @w1mark275 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thankyou for the lyrics. They actually have a lot of context when it comes to the game.
Rubicon Cries. (This is the most obvious one, due to the constant conflict warring on rubicon, it's tearing itself apart and causing misery for all)
I will come. (Because of the building tension of rubicon the protagonist can no longer stand idly by as they hear rubicon's cries)
I take flight. (The inaction has come to an end)
Beautifully. (The protagonist is not just choosing for themselves, they are broadcasting their actions to spread hope to their allies)
      Over Land
and the mountains. (More play on the word "Beautifully" Their presence over land inspires hope)
Rusted pride (The protagonist themselves has had their own fair share of misery but despite it they have not become broken and still believe they have purpose)
on the outsides. (The protagonist's rusted pride is visible for everyone to see. Despite their damages their resolve is still clear, their mech is still operatable)
I can fly! (Raven imagery here, a raven in AC6 signifies the resolve of the protagonist is capable of making their own decisions)
I fly high! (This line signifies that not only do their have free will, but they have enacted it many times before, their decisions have been the resultant of many outcomes)
Watch the sunrise, into dawn. (This line shows the intent of the protagonist's actions, they want to see rubicon will live to see another day.)
Rust away, lost to wind. (By giving rubicon the chance to survive, days will go by and the scars of rubicon will heal)
Note that this song is played during 2 different scenes where you either fighting a character named "Rusty". As you guessed it... "Rusted pride" is Rusty's theme song. Regardless of which scene you are in when Rusted Pride is playing, it signifies the resolve of Rusty's will to protect Rubicon. One of Rusty's important voicelines is "There is no greater threat than power without purpose" which might lean into why his mech is called "Steel Haze" Rusty's mech by itself is just a weapon of massive destruction, but with purpose one can clear away the steel haze which brings one to enact irrationally. Rusty's critical role in the story of AC6 is that he worries about us, 621, have not fully realized their purpose yet and as such is a dangerous tool which can be manipulated by others. And he is right to worry as the ending in which you fight Rusty leads to the death of Rubicon. That said, he still acknowledges that you've found your purpose, even if it's not the one he would have hoped. There is also another character in the game which is named Raven (which you stole from them) which plays a similar role to rusty and tries to prove if you have what it's takes to bear Raven's name. Raven's mech however is called "Nightfall". Nightfall is similarly named like steel haze in which it is the relevant to their character. This can give a little more context to the line "Watch the sunrise, into dawn." as well. Nightfall is symbolic for when conflict is at highest point, just as a sun cannot rise until night has fallen, change cannot be made until action reaches its breaking point. By watching the sunrise into dawn you are watching your own actions reaching its fruition.

Let me know (Him answering che RLF call)
      My steel core (His AC)
      Peeling away
(is a clever joke on the name Rusty, him waiting for the revolution to come,
basically waiting for someone to break the stalemate, in other words us )
      All my blood, (Him, again)
Let me Rise (Again, him becoming the spear of the RLF)
      Rusted Pride (Self explanatory)
Let me Rise (This time is in reference to him as a figther, is no more about politcs, but his commitment as a soldier)
High and dry (Rusty taking the figth to the Corporations)
I fly high (Still him, beliving hin his Pride)
Watch the Sun rise into the dawn (Hope, in the most pure form)
Rust away (to that node it leads to the future where Rubicon is peacful, so the AC can be put away)
Lost to the wind (Like before, lost like a cloud in the sky, Rusty is figthing for a future where he won't be needed to figth)
Watch the Sun rise into the dawn
      I fly high

Steel Haze (Rusted Pride) is easily such a hype song for me. Everything from the context of when the song is played to the blurred lyrics at the end crying out a plea for freedom and another day to rise again resonate with me. It's absolutely a song that needs to be experienced in context, especially since it usually follows after either a really morose tinged victory or adrenaline filled rush of mayhem.

Might be very late, but there's something to note while listening to this which might explain some of the dissonant and syncopated feeling you have aside from story reasons.
Kota Hoshino, the main composer of Armored Core series and the composer of this specific song, is actually a self-taught composer. Most old AC soundtracks are like this, usually somewhat dissonant electro/DnB (?) with syncopated beats, and heavily distorted vocal.
But that's what gives this trippy inhuman feel to the BGM, which is what makes it unique.
If you want to give Kota Hoshino's unique style another go, I'd suggest these:
    1. If you prefer more electro DnB: "The Game" or "Silent Line III"
    2. If you wanna try more vocal: "Stain" or its DnB remix, "Stain (A Perfect Day)"
    3. If you wanna see what Kota Hoshino can do with this style without synth: "Someone is Always Moving on The Surface" or " Lament over The Howling Age"

Honestly, what's going on when this song is playing is kind of stressful. Armored Core by definition is a third person mech shooter but the game itself is one of those games that demands a lot from the player and the game itself can be very hard. So, when this is playing, it's a truly heroic moment, specifically for Rusty (a guy that's fighting in his AC called STEEL HAZE, hence the title) but it's still a desperate conflict where the outcome is very much up for grabs.

in the situation this song appears in, it's both a triumph and a sad ending, it appears in two different story pieces only accessible by playing through it twice, i'm no music techy, but i am an artist, the song having so much noise COULD be that it's a dual fated theme, on one hand you're a hero to the people around you, it'll sound like a warcry, but in the second playthrough, you're about to change the course history for worst just to stop something far more destructive.
edit: the lack of understanding the voice can also be up to the interpretation of the scenario, it's one of the reasons this song is so special, and out of every track in this game, it's my favorite.
TLDR; it takes two playthroughs with two different routes to understand why it has so much noise, and that it's both a battle cry, and an emotional episode.

While the song definitely conveys a sense of disorientation, I don't actually think it's correct to say its main emotional themes are stress and violence- while I do have context from the game, I don't think that's a requirement to get the sense that the song is trying to convey a sense of extremely turbulent and confused hope.
The initial part of the song is nearly impossible to find a beat for, there is no strong backing percussion, the vocals and other instruments play phrases that seem out of time with one another, the vocal mix is muddy- but you can tell that there's SOMETHING going on all together, you get brief windows where some bits seem to make sense with one another- and then it does get a beat, albiet one that feels almost too slow, like the song is dragging itself along, the vocal mix clears up, but not entirely; the other instruments come more into time but not completely, the overall mix improves, but isn't perfected. The song is TRYING to become a confident, triumphant piece, dragging this melody that seemed like it was completely falling apart into something more meaningful, the fact that it never fully succeeds a testament to the monumental difficulty faced in just holding everything together and continuing on.
This ties into the character this song is a theme for: they're a high ranking and extremely skilled member of a resistance organization trying to regain control of their homeworld, a figure that by all means should be a hero- but the conflict the resistance faces is too large for him to handle along, and the resistance itself is weak and wavering. He becomes a double agent, joining one of the corporations who subvert the will of the locals, because it's hoped that from there he can find an opportunity to betray them and win the fight- but doing so requires him to kill his fellows, work against their cause to gain trust with the company, and on top of that he has to watch as the resistance falters in will and leadership as he waits for an opportunity to turn things around that he becomes increasingly concerned may never arrive.
This song plays during two possible paths in the story where your actions have finally given him an opportunity to act and turn things around, and listening to the song is like watching an old, rusted machine against all odds start up again after a long time abandoned, slowly shaking off the rust as old gears turn, and it's clear you're at a turning point- either the turning of the machine will grind away the rust, and it will be restored to something akin to its old glory; or it will sputter and die once more, unable to keep up the monumental effort and break down again, this time for good.

Great track, also the saddest moment in the game

You're definitely supposed to feel conflicted with the tone of this piece. It's played on two different missions with drastically different emotional states. One is high octane heroism while the other is a regretful dance to the death. There's undertones of melancholy because while you achieve your goals, it always seems to come at too great a cost... Chasing that rising dawn to great heights always comes with sacrifice.

I think it is hard to really get the emotional feeling from this song on its own, but with the set up to that moment in the game when it plays, it is absolute perfection.
The beauty of FromSoftware games is not from individual elements, but the combination of it all. I don't think we can really separate story, dialogue, gameplay, graphical detail, art direction, sound, and music. FromSoftware is just able to combine all of these elements into the art they produce.
The tone of Armored Core 6 can be difficult to explain, as it's much deeper and complex than what people may initially expect. Probably the best and quickest way to get a feeling of it comes from the dialog in the latter half of the Launch Trailer: th-cam.com/video/kQJb8He0pYA/w-d-xo.html

Not a boss fight, it's the song for your rival. Whether it's a boss fight or a co-op with him depends which ending you pick but it's His song, you're just along for the ride.

mech game but not an RTS its more like a high speed 3rd person action game. if i had to describe it... its like warframe but its mechs instead? bad analogy but that is the closest thing i can describe to how the game feels. mission structurewise its like ace combat, but mechs.
