  • The Disc 3 addition that just came out about two weeks ago has brought with it some incredible remixes and satisfying sound qualities that have really changed the experience for me, as a person who didn't really care for the OST of AC6.

It all makes sense when you realize that Mecha as a genre is typically the spiritual exploration of having hope for the future of humanity amidst our technologically driven self created hells (that is just one lens of many to contextualize things especially in the music)

Guess it depends on the series but in my experience, mech has more shows about the tragedy of war. But in this context, no the music makes no sense. You have up beat tunes playing while you slaughter workers on strike because the police didn't feel like dealing with it so they hired you to just kill them. Amored Core is one of those series where hope is in short supply.

Armored Core IV has quite a unique sounding ost indeed.
I kinda get why some may find it kinda weird and not attractive but...
It really flourishes in the game itself.
These weird combinations of slow atmosphere and chaotic synths with almost no consistent melody really amplifies the FEEL of Armored Core IV
The feel of confusion and determination mixed with adrenaline and frustration with a sprinkle of sadness and hope.
Yeah thats a big weird mix that you cant really comprehend when you just listen to the music.
Nonetheless, never ever in my life i was so PHYSICALLY invested in a game like i was in Armored Core IV and music plays a HUGE part in this.

15:18 For the Steel Haze remix, I think it's genius they brought in the main synth that was used when you first meet Rusty when you climb the wall in his original "Steel Haze" ost. Just an amazing callback and great use to put that in there.

    • @galaxycamerata
      @galaxycamerata หลายเดือนก่อน

What gives me pause is that the remix feels like it's made to CONTINUE from the original. Like it was meant to play either when he has his second wind in the Fires of Raven route, or even a theoretical scenario where he managed to survive Walter in Liberator of Rubicon.
That effect on the lyrics near the start sounds like the filter they put over comms chatter in-game when their AC is going down. Marco feels like it's the humanity being stripped away, but if anything it sounds like the DEFIANCE of humanity in the face of being stripped away. Rusty refuses to go down until he knows his business is done.

There's a reason that Rusted Pride was the standout of the base AC6 ost. Specifically I think because thematically and practically it feels like an "old" AC song fighting it's way through to the forefront of AC6's more ambient industrial music score. It's nostalgia, but also an admission of how no matter how fundamentally AC changes, "it" is still AC of old.

As marco explained this plays against Balteous when Ayre is helping you but what i love is how epic the ost is because in that moment Raven makes contact with ayre the fate of Rubicon is in your hands because SPOILERS you either destroy the coral and Rubicon in the process or you free the coral and let it outside the planet. So my tip for dealing with Balteus, the only way out of that massive ball of missiles is _through._ Find a gap as they deploy, and the second they start tracking in on you dodge forward at an angle to force the overshoot.
I give you this advice so you can get to the rest of the game, what sounds like good but otherwise unremarkable ambient tracks can suddenly become much more when the context of the gameplay is added on top.

I’d have to agree with ya. It’s almost like they held Kota Hoshino back from showing us what he could really do cuz they didn’t want to make anyone think the music was “weird”

Kota was left to do what he wants with the OST. He chose to go the direction he did in 6, and it's not like he didn't do any bangers. Besides Contact with You and Steel Haze, we also got Unbreakable, Silent Encounter, the Man who would Pass the Torch, Cries of Coral, ALLMIND, and one of my faves, High Pressure

I LOOOVE this OST. It's so damn good. And that song with the entire Dev Team as the Chorus. FreQuency does it again!!
Another song that I feel is vastly improved upon is Carla's theme Rough and Decent. In the game it's almost a mix of an older gen 2 song and some Jazz style tempos. But the Disc 3 version dives deep into the Jazz. And it feels very much like a Cowboy Bebop or Noir style film. One person trying to figure out the events going on around them and most likely it won't end the way you think or want. All the while Carla keeps her trueself as calm and collected as possible. Going with the flow. "Whatever happens, happens."
It's a beautiful rendition that I would love to have seen in the game to highlight her character even more.
Especially since Jazz is engrained in the Gundam community. But that's a tale for another day lol

The newer Contact With You merges with Cries of Coral's vocals. Also you really need to finish the game. Just remember to stay closer to targets and have a punish weapon ready to rock. I recommend avoiding the shotguns because they're the perfect weapon for killing the Forest Spirit from the film Princess Mononoke.

I think the new Version of steel Haze is somthing special. It conpletely changes the meaning of the song. Its inspiring, but with a heavy air of sadness. The heavily distorted vocals at the start and end seem almost as if it were coming from inside a mech itself. It brings about the air of a Fighter who is going into this fight on Duty, but knows he will loose. Yet he rages still against the end.

I grew up on Armored Core. I have always loved the music. Started on the ps1 demo disc that had the demo for AC1 on it. Played almost all the PS2 games as well as AC4 and For Answer. Ever since I discovered the Frequency album a few years ago I haven't stopped listening to it. Kinda funny that back when I was a kid I didn't really pay attention to who the games were made by. It wasn't untill I was older that I realized that Fromsoftware made AC as well as the souls games. I played the original Demon's Souls on Ps3 as well and Bloodborne and Elden Ring are both some of my favorites. FromSoft really has been apart of my life for a long time and I just didn't realize it.

The AC4 answer one gets me every time, the original game we used to run blade only tournaments with that very song in the background, no guns, no rockets, just 1v1 matches with full lobbies with just blades. The remix feels like the gloves are off, the blades were put away, and the guns were ripped from the ground in a brutal fury of metal and shell casings.

AC6 ost feels like for some reason they were afraid of the old ost, even when the entire community pretty much agrees is all bangers.
I have no clue why they felt the need to have so much ambience, you could put me a random track of AC6 and I may not even recognize where is from. (I mean main game track, not boss track and such)
But put me a random track of 3rd or 4th gen of AC? I am telling you WHICH MISSION is from just from memory.

I personally really like the original themes of AC6 a lot, the music captures the desolation of Rubicon really well. That said, I do not mind ambient music.
Btw, could you take a closer look at specific composer works, how their style changes for each game but also how their signature still carries through? For example, Mick Gordon has made a variety of different genres for different games outside of his most famous work for Doom. For lesser known composers might I suggest Tim Follin? His boss music for child-friendly mascot platformer Plok! from 1993 is something to behold! You'd think you are listening to CB. You'll know what I mean by CB when you listen to it.

I absolutely despise that some of these tracks aren't present in the baseline game.
I really don't care for "music needs to allign with the atmosphere" argument, because good music is the one that ends up creating the atmosphere.
What really disappointed me in the base game is how the more orchestral pieces reminded me too much of Souls games, whilst the techno was not better than the techno in Zone of the Enders (another mecha game), which created a sense that they forgot their own identity of music for this franchise.
Turns out, I was wrong, and they simply hid it from us all this time 😭
