I really love how you finally pointed the "rasp" out. It's so damaging for amateur singers to consistently rely on. They do that A LOT on The Voice.
Yeah but a lot of the contestants on The Voice actually are seasoned pros with working careers in music (that usually get asked to audition)...and even most of the amateurs have had training and experience...Most of the rasp I heard here sounded pretty in control (vocal coach myself so...).
also some examples he said were raps were actually just growls. like with anthony riley’s audition

They did "creep" as a duo on season 1 or 2 that was Amazing
Literally the voice was creating for the opposite reason, it’s called the voice because their voice is the criteria. they were competing with American Idol and Xfactor that wanted to find people to sell records. The voice was created to help people with good voices that aren’t exactly commercial have a platform.
That's the outward facing explanation. But that's completely false. It's a typical vocal talent show that is hosted by a big company looking to make a profit. They are looking for someone who will be successful. The Judges are selecting people they feel the public will vote for and that they feel the public would consume their work, in other words looking for people that will be commercially successful. The channel wants high ratings and watch time. The company hosting and producing the show wants profits. The studio offering the recording contract(s) want people who will make them money. The judges are in it at least partially for the money and the win.
Take a handful of minutes and do some research, look at all the people who have talked publicly about the fake drama and bs that goes on behind the scenes of the show. It's been shown before that they've removed crowd favorites that they didn't feel would fit the record label from the show to drive up the drama and buzz. It's also fairly obvious that the judges will sometimes pick up mediocre artists to have throwaways in the battle rounds to allow their favorites to progress farther. When they say the show is about the voice, they are selling you on the show, but in these shows there are always others pulling the strings and it doesn't matter whether the creators of the show or the judges on it want it to be legitimately about the voice, there will always eventually be politics and money involved, especially as it grows.
Secondly what constitutes a "good voice"? That's what the show decides, what the judges decide, and then what the public decides. The judges want to win and want the artists to win, so they're going to pick artists that they think the public will like. The public isn't exactly trained in vocal technique and the vast majority have no clue what and how the singers are doing what they do, so when the public is involved in voting what are they going to vote for? The people they would like to listen to, the artists whom's media they would consume. The one who wins is the one whom most the audience would listen to and thus buy and thus be the most commercially successful. A person with a commercial sound will fit this criteria well, as can visionary singers, but one can argue that many visionaries are indeed commercial as they'd occupy their own niche and have less competition. In the end whether by design, by intent, or by natural consequence the show filters the most potentially commercially successful sounding voices.
Secondly the show is called the voice because of the fact that it's only the voice that is used to determine whether they get into the show, via the blind chair turning. Nothing about that says anything about not prioritizing commercial sounding voices. I feel you have a misunderstanding of what a "commercial voice" means.
Alex Ramirez I think you’re missing the point. They still have to have a voice that will sell or a type of music that’s going to be a hit. If you’re really talented but sing shit that no one wants to listen to it’s pointless. It’s meant to not take their appearance into consideration. So if you get some overweight or unattractive person up there that won’t be used as a basis for the first part.
They turn because of their voice and not if they sound like a selled record. Besides the genre of the song they choose to sing on the show doesn’t mean that’s what they will follow on their career. Also different types of music can be persuaded and be best selling if done in the right way. We could easily be buying reggae music from Rihanna in a future.
Agreed, its about if they sound good or not, not if they could sell records I think. Not to mention Damien Marley just won a grammy with a Reggae album so obviously reggae is doing pretty well for itself especially in places like Hawaii where its extremely big.

If they don’t sell records why do wee need them in music industry? Thats the reason why theres no The Voice winners around the world being that successful

It's not just who has a trendy style, but who has a good voice regardless of style.
The show is about sounding good, not marketable. That’s what they turn for.
Not to mention, stuff like country sells very well. It’s just on different charts than Billboard. Same with most other genres, there are markets for them if you know what station to put them on. Taylor Hicks, for example, from American Idol. Haven’t heard him in years. He does very well on country charts and stations.
Yeah it's called the voice. Obviously some judges will turn for a second of a certain type of voice or a certain song, but most people at that level can song a lot of different genres not just what will "sell"
But let's not forget that Kacey Musgraves, who is mostly a country singer, won so many awards this year
That's the conceit of the show, sure, but ultimately, the coaches want to win, the artists want to have successful careers, and the company wants to turn a profit.
Modern country - bad R&B with a drawl and a steel guitar....
So much this. Being successful and being the most commercial is not the same thing. Not to mention the fact that there has to be someone to be the first to make a certain style or sound become trendy. It's the people who make music they love and sing the way they want without giving a shit if it's trendy right now that make trends happen 99.9% of the time. Also, you should ALWAYS be looking for longevity. If you're only turning for people that sound trendy right now when that trend end so do their careers. A truly great vocalist can adapt to pretty much any style to fit a trend if needs be. I would have a much harder time turning the trendy voice of today into a fuller, more powerful, belty, darker toned voice, if that came back into fashion like every thing else from the 90s, than I would getting a person with a powerful, belty, fuller voice to sing light and bright and soft to fit the trend of right now. That's just my opinion and my experience of working in the industry.
