On the other hand, he didn't give Kelly Clarkson enough credit, other than making countless sneers about her "tone", "emotion" and the fact that it was rehearsed. I wonder...could he do at least 5% of what Kelly Clarkson just did? Because she DID THAT! That woman is a world icon and for two decades she has been serving us incredible live performances. Ari and Kelly can SANG anything !

thank you for mentioning that it’s rehearsed, i hate how the media portrays singers like they’re always ready to go as if they’re angels with unnatural abilities. and they convince the public that singing is a talent for the blessed.
Thanks! At least one person gets it. Obviously they still sang great but even the best singers are not encyclopedias of musical/vocal knowledge just able to sing any song on key at a moments notice without so much as a a reference pitch. This is clear in the "say it not spray it" segment where, suddenly, all of the singers begin to forget songs, melodies, etc. Because that segment was not rehearsed whereas this one likely was to some extent.

One thing you have to remember about Ariana is that she's been singing these ballads since she was like 4 years old and she sings constantly. So yea she definitely practices these songs a lot, not necessarily for the show, but because she just loves singing those kinds of songs around the house for fun.

Dude. The whole point of watching this as a vocal coach is to focus on the artists vocal technique. You barely talked about Ariana and Kelly's actual singing. Of course it's scripted; it's a segment on late night tv. In other news, water is wet. And it's a shame, because they both do some really great vocals here. That's what people are clicking on this video to hear about.

Tristan hardly knows anything about voice! Its amazing how easily he has fooled people. Coming from someone who actually studied voice, the guy has no knowledge about voice technique. Trust me.
Yes! He spoke way too much about it and I don't understand why he felt the need to mention it. It is very normal for everything on TV to be scripted. I felt like he believed only a vocal coach would understand it is scripted, as if you only know this basic stuff if you are him. Which is a tad egotistical. It is pretty much common sense for many people who watch TV.

this is absolutely very scripted, however, in Ariana's case (I don't know about Kelly), she has been doing these impressions for years and even said that when she became her own artist she had a hard time finding her own sound because she had been practicing the sounds of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, and more her whole life. So, I actually wouldn't be surprised if she can just bust these impressions out without rehearsal even with riffs because she's been doing it on her own outside of performance for years

Kelly is one of the best vocalist of our generation she can sing any song. It’s sad that people sleep on her. Goes listen to some of her live covers.
Of course this is rehearsed, it’s a talk show, why continue to say it over and over again. And even if it wasn’t, both Kelly and Ariana are phenomenal singers who can sing their lungs out without needing to warm up, it’s been seen many times.

this show is more realistic than you think it is. the reason they know which lyrics to sing is because there is a moniter right in front of them that jimmy ACKNOWLEDGES while explaining the rules of the game. also if you watched the whole episode you would’ve seen the parts where kelly, blake, and ariana literally did not know the songs or could not remember the lyrics without the moniter. also you clearly underestimate ariana as a singer because she can and she has come up with new riffs, runs, and harmonies on a whim.

Jimmy Fallon for Pete's sake! Ariana is so well known for her ability to parody nearly any amazing singer. The choreography was a mini take on Spears choreography in the video. And Kelly Clarkson has become a phenomenal and nuanced singer. She shows unreal versatility, emotion, strength with every performance. Clearly they have to give the singers a starting point, etc. to allow it to work for TV. If you notice they are shooting in a continuos take. You always see Kelly & Ariana in the same frame. Of course they practice to a degree --- Talk shows always appear off the cuff/spontaneous. All talk shows prepare their host & guests with topics of interest, funny anecdotes, etc. As dorky as the graphics are and the actual "game" is all I noticed was the AMAZING talent. I thought that was why you were watching.???

The words are coming up in front of them. It's karaoke. That's how they know when to stop. Arianna is well known for her awesome mimicry. Both of these ladies would know all of these songs.
Finally someone who doesn't say that the whole thing is just scripted and points out that the lyrics to the songs is coming up in front of them and he really makes it seem like it's not remotely possible for someone to know all these songs

@@Chris-ms7mm for real i was really excited to watch this because the other vocal coach i watch hasn't reacted to this yet and i really wanted to see a reaction, but im disappointed because all i'm hearing is how it's scripted and rehearsed and nothing about how amazing of a singer both of them are. like sure, they probably practiced it, but for 99% of people, a lifetime of practice wouldn't get them to sing and belt like they do.

The “slay it don’t spray it” segment is more authentic or unrehearsed and you can tell. More in line with what you’re talking about with mess ups or not hitting it perfectly and even knowing when to come in or what the lyric is.

Not trying to be mean, but did you think any televised performance in the US isn't pre planned? They do rehearsals for The Tonight Show for upwards of 2 weeks prior depending on the skit. None of these are on the fly, it's all planned. But the vocal performances are still live so they still deserve the recognition.
bruh this video is literally 98% discussing that its rehearsed and 1.9% fangirling on ariana and 0.1% rating/reacting to the vocal techniques of both
(edit) on a side note... it may or may not be rehearsed because
1. Ariana reacted early to the showdown because it was initially a team challenge between ariana and blake vs kelly and john... soooo its already obvious that kelly will be having a showdown with ari
2. the thing where they know when to start and when to end, yes there might be something they're hearing in their earpieces but jimmy said that they are following the lyrics in front of them... there are lyrics in front of them and probably go and stop signals
3. the only probably thing rehearsed or talked about ahead of time is the fact that its pop divas... you dont know these 2 much but they're a fan of probably all pop divas (considering that they're pop divas themselves) and that's probably also why they know so much about the songs

Yes but that just reinforced the point IMO. Especially because she did many of these impressions before specifically on Jimmy's show which points to the idea that the show scripts this segment in communication with the artists as to what they are comfortable singing/impersonating.

If you want good impressions you need to react to more Tori Kelly. Her Britney Spears cover/impression on the Masked Singer was exceptional, and she does a scarily good Christina Aguilera impression, easily the best I've ever heard!
Every song Ariana sang I’ve heard her sing before so I think that’s how she did it. She has practiced all of these songs before

i feel like the show doesn’t expect us to ACTUALLY believe it’s real, it would be boring for them to just sing a mashup which is why they disguise it as a ‘game’. i doubt most people think it’s real
Even if it wasn't scripted, kelly would have won. Her knowledge about pop music is generally really good, she knows too many songs and she does a lot of covers, so chances are, she's already has had a bit of rehearsal or atleast knows the exact way to sing it. Also personally I think she's just a better impressionist because she's so versatile, can sing so many genres..
she only won because she had the last song. ariana would have and already killed i will always love you many times before. for example on snl. even tho they let kelly win this it was arianas impression of celine that went viral lol. kelly is amazing but ariana is the queen of impressions. theres a difference between doing a cover and impersonating. aside from her alanis morisette impression, ariana definitely had more accurate impersonations.
They do struggle through the songs in a different game on the same show. For this one the lyrics was on the screen, they just had to sing.

This is a very disappointing reaction from a vocal coach. Perfect pitch, although uncommon among the general population, is very common amongst talented singers and musicians. It's obvious that this is scripted, however there should be no difficulty in an expectation that anyone, singer or not, would know the most recognized parts of Iconic songs. Additionally, to be "surprised" by vocal flourishes or mimicking is absurd. Any musician who has mastered their instrument is capable of the same. At that level it is as natural as speaking.
And he talked more shit about the show than reacting to their vocals. At least that's what it felt like to me watching the video. Very annoying imo...

Perfect pitch is NOT common amongst "talented singers and musicians." Not at all. I'm not sure where you are getting that information from. Additionally, The issue is not "recognizing" iconic parts of songs. It is knowing, without hesitancy, the song so well that you are able to begin the song without a reference pitch at the precise chorus (because each chorus is different) the band is playing.
And no, I'm not surprised by vocal "flourishes." The surprising would be the aforementioned grievance along with the runs.

Perfect pitch is absolutely common within the context of this criticism. Although present in less than 1/10,000 of the general population, it is upwards of 10% in musicians, a 1,000X increase. This percentage of occurrence increases dramatically as the sample population decreases in accordance with the level of talent. At the highest levels, such as Ariana, Kelly, John, The Roots... perfect pitch would be a completely unsurprising trait. Even in lieu of perfect pitch, Muscle and Echoic memory would be applicable and enable the same capability. Your rebuttable relies on an over exaggeration of a requirement of "knowing, without hesitancy, the song so well that you are able to begin the song without a reference pitch". Although perfect pitch negates the requirement of a reference tone, each song began with a drop in beat and tone sufficient to satisfy your argument. This aside, they both also wore ear pieces that may or may not have provide your missing information. Presuming that we settled on a agreement to disagree, it wouldn't alter your obvious predisposition and dislike of Jimmy Fallon's antics and general disapproval of your presumed observations. As a vocal coach, "a professional", if you can't approach your subject matter with an open mind and unbiased position, then to what extent can your comments be taken with any value other than scripted entertainment... the same general criticism you highlight in this video.
Even if it is 10%, which I do not believe, that is not that common. Additionally, the singers in this video do not have perfect pitch so your point is not relevant in the first place. However, even if they did- one of the songs they sang has a key change without a reference pitch given for the singer. That would only be a 50/50 shot of getting the exact right note. There is, however, a cleverly placed F# chord before the note which, during a rehearsal, would have taught the singer what to listen for and used to create a relative pitch in her head for the B she sings on "and I"
Just use occams razor on this one and move on.

Well, if you watched the entire episode you would know the proper concepts of the games a bit better, the reason they react before Jimmy finishes his sentence sometimes, is because they know what he's gonna say or whose name he's gonna call. The songs are also really popular and I think it's almost impossible for someone especially celebrity singers like them to not know the song.🤷♀️

People saying Kelly is underrated must be under 20. Anyone in their late twenties , early thirties knows how amazing, talented and phenomenal singer she is. Girl is still considered one of , if not the most, talented singer to come out of American Idol, she won TWICE best pop album, best performance and has been nominated for awards for over 20 years. She's just that good.

Kelly started out as a good singer, but since Idol has become a phenomenal voice!
I think he underestimates how much both of these women really know pop music. Every song Ariana sings, she's impersonated those singers before whether on Jimmy Fallon or just in random videos gushing over how much she loves those singers. To an extent I'm sure the showrunners made sure that whatever was picked was in their wheel house. Also watching this season of the voice proved that they're both really formidable on their own and great at pitch.
Well- yes. Doesn't that point to the scripted nature to some extent if she has already done these impressions on Jimmy's show in the past? Especially considering producers have come out about wheel of impressions being scripted and altered to the desires of the singers.

The question about how Kelly knew what pitch for "I Will Always Love You" is...odd? Like, she's been a professional singer for most of her life and has proven she has A+ pitch. She also might have perfect pitch. I have almost perfect pitch (it's not 100% flawless, but it's accurate more often than not), so if Kelly, who is infinitely better than I am, is familiar with that song, it's completely realistic to think she would hit the ground running without needing a lead note.

I didn't much care for the constant knocking on how it was rehearsed, it probably was so that it brings the entertainment factor that everyone is wanting so that we can really hear their amazing voices which I personally would rather have. Also, the main reason I watch Tristan's videos is to hear his opinion on various people's and celebrities voices, not on shows 🙃
