Dear Miss Suzanne, After knitting my first pair of socks, I searched how to block them, and found you. Seeing your stranded-knit socks was like viewing knitted MUSIC!
As always clear and concise w/o distraction. I've looked at other intarsia tutorials and have wasted my time. I'm going to practice this and want to add to a blanket. It looks beautiful and easy with ur method. Thanks
Wow! You must have read my mind, because as I was watching your flat intarsia video, I was hoping SOMEONE would do a tutorial about cable intarsia. And so you did one. :-D Thanks.
I'm in your tutorial/KAL for the It Takes a Guild custom fit sweater. I had decided to skip cables altogether and just concentrate on the raglan construction itself, the shawl collar, and your special pockets since it will be my first sweater. (first garment period) After watching this video, however, I really think I might be able to handle including a simple instarsia cable as well! I know you're there in the group along with others to help if it's needed. Thanks so much for your clear, understandable videos and KAL handouts. I'm learning so much!
Now I know why my spliced areas of yarn were so thick! My yarn appears to have three plies and I was only pulling one ply out of each end of them instead of one ply out of one end and two plies out of the other end. Eventually, I find all the answers to my problems in your videos. Here's a big hug for all you've helped me learn. 🤗 18:13
That was a great tutorial! I never imagined doing intarsia cables but you make it so clear and it seems very doable. Thank you for all of your instructional videos.
That was such a wonderful and detailed video 👍 Thank you for sharing all those great tips to neater knitting...look forward to seeing more of your videos in your Facebook group. 🙏
Very good timing... just about to start a wedding afghan with cables intertwining the bride and groom's favorite colors on a background color that's in between... Will be my first color work project...
Wow I put off a project for a few years because the thought of this was terrifying. I really wish I had found this video sooner I got it to work on my 1st attempt. Thank you so much 😊
Thanks Susan for this video. You are an awesome knitter. I have learnt so many things from your tutorial videos. Hope you will upload many more videos as interesting as this one 😊👍👍👍
So glad I came across this before starting to cable knit. Your method looks very appealing to me. In fact, I'm gonna change my knitting style to Continental, instead of Hamfisted Bungle Style. thank you so much!
Wow, you make this cable stitching seem so simple, I'm working along with you. Thank you. The sweater may be tio much, need to practice the over/under-stitches to front or back for direction of stitch. What an early morning perk (a night owl am I) and subscribed
Once again Suzanne you have excelled. Although I have been knitting for over 50 years, I was never shown how to change colours properly so have steered away from Intarsia (first heard this word yesterday) knitting and didn't know how to splice. You are awesome. Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I will be watching all your videos and knitting along.
Oh my gosh!! How cool!! I would love to try this, but I don't know if I'm ready to commit to an entire sweater. That seems totally overwhelming. I think we need a video to meet the dogs! I love hearing them in the background. Thanks for a great tutorial, Suzanne!
@@PattymacMakes You can do this with any cable pattern. This particular one is a Celtic cable pattern. Just Google Celtic Cable Charts. Happy New Year.
Wow!! Gorgeous! I have a poncho I want to knit this year in a tweed cream, it has a single band of cabling along the bottom edge. I thought it would be beautiful if I could do that cable in an icy blue, but I couldn’t figure out how to accomplish what I imagined. Tonight I stumbled on this video…thank you!! So excited to try this!!
Well what an EXCELLENT VIDEO, Suzanne! Thank you very much! Although I don't intend to use Intarsia cables on my ITAG sweater, this very useful and informative video opens up to me MANY CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES in future cabled projects!
Lovely. I would love to join your KAL of set in sleeve garment. That is something I always wanted to learn but somehow so hard to self teach. Hopefully there will be soon in the near future ☺️ Happy weekend and happy knitting!
Probably some time next year. We are going to do a yoke sweater next, followed by drop shoulder with saddles and then the set in sleeves. Hugs and Happy knitting.
Thank you so very much for posting this! I bought a sock pattern on Ravelry (I’m pretty certain it’s by you!) that incorporates this beautiful technique. Im so very glad I ventured onto this video, or I’d never figured out how to work this design🧐 Also, I’d never seen or heard of this method of splicing yarn. This is so very clever! Currently I’m knitting a pair of socks with a tremendous amount of cable stitches, and I’m more than ready to try to work it without a cable needle. Please wish me luck!
Next time your dogs are playing nearby, please give us a quick shot of them. I was dying to see them play! (Although I was pretty much able to picture them the whole time!)
Really beautiful Suzanne my brain wouldn’t comply yet at only 2 yrs being able t knit to a pattern I’d get too confused but definitely worth watching to know what one day I may be able to do this. Still can’t read charts but I’ll get their I’m a much better knitter now than even 6 months ago
@@SuzanneBryan now my knitting is much better you were absolutely correct. It takes time. But what a difference two years make when you have good instructor’s helping you learn. Thanks, so much.
Very cool. We have a local knitting guild, called What the Knit. If you are on FaceBook you can find us there, with all our information. You will need to ask to join the group.
What a beautiful intarsia cable of contrasting colors! Will you consider creating a pattern for hat or cowl using this two color cable for fast knits on your Ravelry store?
Hi Matilde, I do have patterns on Ravelry that do encompass this pattern. including a pillow and cardigan, here are the links, www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cable-pillow-tutorial www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/it-takes-a-guild-cardigan-tutorial. 😊 Thanks so much for watching and please also check out my other patterns on Ravelry.
This is beautiful. Ya know, I have attempted to colorize my cables in the past, failed, and wondered if it could really be done. I was making a messenger bag in coal grey with cables, and I wasn't very pleased, because the cables were blending. Now I can pick it back up, thanks to you. Also the tip for splicing is heaven sent. I always hated the idea of spit part lol. Now, can this be done with any cable?
I"m trying to do the same I"m working on this pattern www.studioknitsf.com/heart-cable-knit-scarf/ I can't see to get it, my color stops and starts are wrong and i'm getting gaps in my color changes i'm getting frustrated.
Incredibly helpful and delivered well! I never knew you could connect two pieces of yarn like that. Gotta say it still freaks me out a bit but it seems to work :D
I wanted so badly to finish this video but I couldn’t because of the dog’s noises. I have misophonia and it sucks because repetitive, unpredictable noises trigger the heck out of me. I made it 10 minutes through but got to the point where I couldn’t focus on anything but the dog noises. This looks so cool. I tried using the captions but I can’t read it and pay attention at the same time. :( It’s lovely work you did there.
Anyway, this seems more rewarding and do-able than socks. This is beautiful work. I'm going to try 'intarsia cables in the round' first, then tackle this many colored threads. I can do these cables all in one color however, the colored braid is too gorgeous to pass up.
Hi Suzanne - I see in your sample that you're using to ends of the yellow/gold color yarn. How does that work when attempting to incorporate the skein of alternate color yarn in the actual pattern for ITAG cardigan? It's easy w/working a swatch since you can use a long strand of yarn, however, when it's in a skein I'm confused as to how to get the two ends unless I pull from the outer and inner skein and that doesn't make sense to me either. Thank you for all your tutorials. It's slow-going for me but I'm learning.
Thanks Suzanne, I love all your videos and this was great….something I haven’t done before. I wonder, could you just work all legs of the cable from the one strand of wool and just carry the yarn across the back as with Fair Isle? I’m trying to work it out in my head but should of course give it a go. I figure you’ll have an answer as to why or why not though ;). Thanks in advance.
If you did just work across with the same strand, depending on how many cables you are working, it could constrain the fabric. It would lose its stretch. Try it on a swatch and see what you think,
Nice Suzanne, Is it possible to do a black background with 3 different colours for the cable? EG: Black back ground with green white and red on the cable. Thankyou
Awesome Suzanne. can you talk about color dominance, please? Also in slip stitch work is it normal for your floats to be shorter on the wrong side of fabric when you are slipping stitches on both r and w sides of the work? Thanks for your awesome sharing of your time with us.
Trudy, I have not made a video on color dominance yet, can you believe that? I am adding it to my list. But, on your question about the slipped stitches and the floats, I address this in this video - th-cam.com/video/ZnY3qby6mhQ/w-d-xo.html. I think you will find your answer there.
Hi Suzanne, thank you so much for this video. I would like to use your technique to add some interest to a cabled coat pattern that I’m about to start, but the pattern uses a 3-over-3 cable design rather than 2-over-2. Should I still cast on just one stitch per leg, and make triple increases in my setup row where you make pfb in the video?
I would try on a swatch first - cast on ½ of the required stitches for the cable legs. Then increase in the legs, 2 increases in one leg and one in the other. The one with two would be the one to the front. But try it on a swatch to make sure you are happy with it first.
❤ Thank you so much for your teaching . I am a very very new knitter. This is my second piece . I enjoyed your teaching. It is very easy to follow , but what about the last portion ? I do not know how to do it 😢😭 but I want to do it. Can you tell me where to look for the other half where you completed the square ( the top portion. ) Thank you 🥰🤗😍
I love this too. I also am pushing myself, really challenging myself with this ITAG kal. I am learning alot. My question is this, do i read the pattern left to right, right to left, both? You said read laft to right , but read right to left. I dont want to miss anything. Thanks
Hi Suzanne ,Earlier I asked for help with the The Matilda Round -Neck sweater. in the book of Lovely KNITS FOR LITTLE GIRLS Because I learn knitting by looking from a Romanian lady she doe not speak English and I don't speak Romain so all I did is watch how she knit lately I started to read knitting book and I'm not quite sure if the pattern I mention if it was a top down or down up .Thanks.
Don’t panic, start with a simple diamonds eg. 10 stitches wide in the main colour, 2 st for the cable and knit as usual, just be careful when changing the colour, not to end up with a haul , use the same yarn for the cable, don’t cut it, but leave it loose, it is very simple for the beginning, good luck
Suzanne, this is a great video. Thanks. I am a new knitter, but have trouble with reading charts wherein they indicate to cast on, for example, ten stitches plus five. A chart will show how to knit within a colored area. What happens outside that colored area. Does it round-out the pattern?
@@SuzanneBryanSuzanne, if you took the pattern you use for the Intarsia Cables, and colored the block, then expand the chart outside the colored block, with additional stitches (this would give you ten stitches, plus x amount of stitches outside the colored block. Some written patterns don't give you a visual chart, but just written. I just don't understand. I am sorry, but this is the only way I can explain it. Cast on ten plus x amount of stitches.
@@leelav2290 This is just a single cable. Are you talking about making a wider design by repeating the cable across the fabric? If so, this is not one of those types of cables. What you will need is an "allover" type of cable pattern. Do you have any cable pattern books? I also have a video on basic chart reading - you can find it here - th-cam.com/video/gNmIY5guu58/w-d-xo.html
It is absolutely mind-blowing and thank you so much! I only have one question though. You said here and in another video you have to read the chart from left to right if the number is on the left, so on the wrong side. In this video in the beginning of the first row the number is on the left but you started pointing from right to left on the chart. Is it something am I missing or misunderstood? x
I know it's been months, but in case anyone else had this question, the chart she's using is symmetrical, at least on the wrong side rows. So reading the ws rows left to right or right to left doesn't matter in this case since it's the same each way.
The design is beautiful, but where or how do you know when to add the color. I think if the chart and legend were highlighted with a color it would make it easier to know. The if symbol doesn’t indicate a Color to use.
One easy way to identify which stitches are the cable stitches is to look for the knits (RS). The cable will be the knit stitches. the background will be the purls. Hope this helps.
So I want to do this pattern for the brim of a hat with intarsia for the cable and sew them together after knitting flat. How do I do that so the cable matches up and you cannot see the join? After that I intend to pick up stitches along the edge and knit in the round for the hat .....
This is a great idea for a video. I have a similar one for lace - joining the beginning to the end on a border - it is the same concept. - th-cam.com/video/gwB51y5-S7w/w-d-xo.html
I love the technique with no ends to weave in at the start. And love your dogs playing while you work :)

I love this too. I also am pushing myself, really challenging myself with this ITAG kal. I am learning alot. My question is this, do i read the pattern left to right, right to left, both? You said read laft to right , but read right to left. I dont want to miss anything. Thanks
You are correct. WS rows are read left to right. Hugs and happy knitting!
You are an incredible teacher. Do you teach workshops?
Thank you! I do teach workshops. Hugs and Happy knitting.
It is bottom up. I looked it up on Ravelry, you can see it here - www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/matilda-round-neck-textured-sweater
OMG !!!
this looks scary enough for me to back up and scream

I am not sure what you are asking. Can you reword it? Or give more information?
@@SuzanneBryan yes that does help quite a bit. Thanks so much.
great!
@@SuzanneBryan thank you . I will check it out.
