Can you explain why? Why are short rows worked after every 4th garter ridge? Why short rows at all? And after 4th ridge and how often thereafter?
@@CatFromFL Yes, think about the row gauge for Stockinette and the row gauge for garter stitch. They are quite different, I have a video that demonstrates this and how to adjust the ratio

Hi Suzanne, I've been knitting for several years but have never tried to knit intarsia. Then I saw the "Safe at Home Blanket" with the little houses and I knew I had to try it. The only problem was- I couldn't understand the printed instructions. I saw several youtube vids but yours is the absolute fabulous BEST for a beginner like me. Hi Suzanne. You are truly EXCEPTIONAL and blest with talent. I have become ADDICTED to your prestigious channel. I did make a cardigan with a three color intarsia long ago. TH-cam or computers didn't exist. My finished project looked great from the right side but the wrong side was a twisted jungle.
I started on a project yesterday and thought I'd visit your channel for some advise. I am glad I did. My dispersed squirrels would have looked like rats! I have to use many separate little balls of yarn instead of the 3 large balls of yarn as mentioned in the book. Words ain't enough to say THANKYOU to my Teacher. Suzanne you are adorable. Wow, that garter short ridge trick is brilliant. I am sure a lot of shawls with 3 garterstitch-edges would look a lot better if one incorporated this

OMG another eye-opener. It never occurred to me to add rows in a garter edge. I have noticed the effect of mixing garter edges with stockinette interiors but have always just knitted them more loosely to keep everything flat. Doh! You are a smarty pants.

I love it. Your words are easy to follow and the close ups are very helpful. Repeating a few times is great for everyone and especially us older knitters. Will you do a video on intarsia in the round? Its tricky (my attempt at a hat was wonky) but I bet you will give a straightforward explanation on the tricky part. I did mine using short rows but there were so many bumps and I didn't hide the SR very well. Help.
Yes, doing intarsia in the round is on my todo list. Maybe in a couple of weeks. Keep an eye out for it. Happy knitting.
Even after blocking the W & T made bumps in the hat. Maybe doing German Short Rows might solve this. I just learned GSR or Double Stitch and it looks amazing.@@SuzanneBryan

Really great video! This is by far the best tutorial I've ever seen. Just wondering if the short rows are an absolutely necessary. I've tried in the past working with short rows and have had great difficulty.
The short rows are only there to compensate for the row gauge difference between the garter stitch borders and the stockinette intarsia. You an omit them if you want
@@SuzanneBryan As I was working on my project, I noticed that sometimes there would be an extra or one less of a stitch. Is that because I didn't use the short rows method or just bad counting lol

Hi just come across this video. Havnt knitted for years, however just bought a kaffe fassett designer knitwear book which has fabulous colourful designs...I can follow the chart but changing the colour every row for the rib leaves me with a colourful fringe at either end? And of course I had holes at every colour change, as Id never done or heard of intarsia...talk about jumping in at the deepend ...however I found your tutorial extremely helpful..so I will try again, but still not sure how to deal with the 'fringe' from 14 rows of different coloured rib?? Another thing is I am English and serm the knit in a different style? I have just ordered a pair of circular needles for this project to try as they look easier to manage with...mine are 42 cm long which I tuck underarm!? Is this method oldfashioned or just English?🤣❤ persevering! Debs in Spain x
You can do this method with either straight needles or circular needles. If you end up needing more help, just let me know.

Hi Suzanne, I’m fascinated with the short row in the garter stitch band. I’ve never heard of using them to even out the row gauge. Is there a rule of thumb about how often to do the short rows when knitting a long band of garter stitch? I always learn something from your videos, they are great! You are my “go to” when I have a question re technique. Thanks. Kathy V.
Yes, measure your row gauge from the main fabric, and your row gauge from the garter stitch. Compare them. In this instance I am getting 7 rows of stockinette and 9 rows of garter to one inch. So I add 2 rows of garter every inch or 1 garter ridge (equal to 2 rows). Great question Katherine. Thank you.

I’m a new intarsia knitter & really appreciate this clearly explained video. I have a question for which I’ve been unable to find an answer & hope you can help.
If the contrasting color on the Purl side (for instance the green in the video) is picked up several stitches out to the side from the last green (knitted) row, that seems to create a float. Is there any way to correct that. Should the float be limited to 5 or less stitches? Thanks very much!
Technically, there should be not floats with intarsia. But sometimes there may be times when you would use intarsia, stranding and such simultaneously.

hello. thanx for wonderful tutorials. i have a question about loose stitches next to color change. it always happens to the first stitch after color change on the wrong side. so if you look from the right side, you see loose last stitches before color changes (loose always only those done in purl on the wrong side.) thanks
For some people, this is the same problem as untidy edge stitches. I have a video on that topic. Watch the video and then apply either technique that I show, but on that stitch that tends to be enlarged. @@SuzanneBryan it works perfectly 😍 when joining new color on right side I am making the second stitch shorter by taking the yarn the other way and on the wrong side when joining new color second and forth stitch and the join looks very even. Than you so much 😉

I'm new to knitting. Why do you add the short rows in? I love your videos.
The short rows were added to compensate in the length difference between garter stitch and stockinette. If there are no short rows added in the garter stitch section, it will pull in and distort the central stockinette. You can look for blankets with garter stitch edges and you will see what i mean. So you are getting 5 garter ridges? or 5 garter rows? I suspect that it is ridges. Each ridge consists of 2 rows. So you need to add a garter ridge (2 rows) every inch. Or, after the 5th garter ridge, add another. Let me know if this works for you. Happy knitting.

I miscalculated. It is 6 rows of garter stitch, (3 ridges) per inch and 7 rows of st st per inch. So the ratio is 6:7. My understanding of your explanation is to add 1 garter stitch short row every 7th st st rows...correct? I'm starting the garter st short row on the 7th row; after the 3rd garter stitch ridge and on the right side. I need to add 70 rows of st st so I will add 10 extra rows in garter stitch, correct? Thanks for your patience.
That just does not sound right to me. If the garter stitch is worked with the same yarn and needles, there are always more garter rows than St st rows.
Can I just do everything in a purl stitch? The whole 5 knits and 5 purls make it all so confusing. I am used to the purl and not the knit stitch and it's so frustrating 😪😪😪😪

Hi - this is my first go at intarsia & am a new knitter! Can you start intarsia using the purl stitch first? My pattern says to p25 in blue, p13 in purple then p25 in blue. Am so Confused!

I worked short rows in garter stitch borders to compensate for their short row gauge compared to St st. If you download the tutorial, there is more explanation in it. When adding a new color on the purl side do you put the tail on the wrong side of the work or the right side of the work?

I feel a bit silly asking, but why did you create a short row in the 4th row in the garter edge? Is this because the stockinette stitches are elongated because of the knit sts being taller than the purls in the garter? And did you continue this every 4th row?
This is not a silly question. Garter stitch and Stockinette stitch (the intarsia part) have different row gauges. Have you ever notice something like a scarf with a garter border - how the border pulls up? That is because the garter rows are tighter than the fabric they are surrounding. Yes I did. You need a separate strand for each section.
Generally people who knit intarsia had so much yarn trailing behind makes he sweater so bulky . You are the first I've seen so neat and tidy.
