    Part 2 of this ocean tutorial is now available and is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of geometry nodes, so if you're interested in working with geometry node's, part 2 will give you the in-depth understanding needed to build anything you can imagine. It's available from my Gumroad www.3d-illusions.co.uk

    Congratulations, it is the most realistic simulation of the ocean I have seen in Blender. (and I have seen many)
    And I think the merit is double for being rendered in EEVEE.

    This is a fantastic ocean - both realistic looking and functioning. When I first downloaded it, I had a small error, but this turned out to be the result of my inexperience with Blender rather than through any fault of the developer, but he still walked me through the problem and got me on my way. I definitely recommend this ocean for anyone looking for a quick and easy yet professional looking asset. Thanks!

      3d illusions yeah I’d love it, coming from max, blender seems to have so much hidden gems, whenever I’m missing some feature there comes along something awesome in a similar way.. it’s so surprising how you think you know 3d, but then there’s more 3d :)

    This is one of the best Blender tutorials I've ever seen! I've learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed the process + I have a cool-ass realistic ocean to show for it. Thank you so much!
    P.S. when keyframing the animations for the camera, you can still use a high ocean resolution with the shrinkwrap constraint, you just have to repeatedly use alt + o to smooth out the keyframes in the graph editor until the camera movement is smooth enough to your liking. :)

  • @30Salt
    @30Salt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    To smooth out the camera motion, in the graph editor, select all rotation keyframes and press alt+o as many times as you like, usually once is enough.

    Wow, this is simply the best Ocean Modifier tutorial I have ever seen. I've also learnt so much about Blender from this that isn't related to the Ocean Modifier, that I'm going to have to watch this through many times! The Viewport render animation blew me away also as to the amount of time saved on the render time, and I hope I find another video explaining the pros and cons of this method. I'm subscribed, and hope to find you've many more videos of this depth & quality. :)

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, it's only set up for EEVEE. For Cycles, you'll need to make some tweaks. I haven't tried it with cycles, but a few others have bought it for that purpose, so you should be able to get good results. Personally though, I'd recommend you render it with EEVEE, and then render the cycles elements separately and combine in comp.

      @@PartTimeExplorer Oh, that's odd, I've had no other reports of this. Do you have any issues with other scenes? Just in case it's a graphics driver issue. Which version of Blender are you using please? So I can check it this side in the same version. Does it happen in the viewport and in final render, or just in the viewport?

      Just checked in 3.1 Beta, and it's all good this side on my trusty gtx 1070. The only thing I can think of would be a driver issue, or perhaps you've downloaded the wrong file for your blender version. In the downloads section, you have options for 2.8, 2.93 and 3.0 (which works with 3.1 also).
      Drop me an email to support if you're unable to find what's causing it, and I'll see if I can help you with the troubleshooting at your side 👍

      @@3d-illusions only 1 clarification. You mentioned several times along the video your GPU but, in my limited understanding, Evee uses only CPU. If so, GPU is not really very relevant. In fact I have msi 2x2080ti trio 11GB and I cannot get better performance in the render than yours

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Boluda EEVEE uses only the GPU for rendering. If you have slow performance make sure you have set the samples to 3 and turned off the denoiser. Also be sure to use the 3d viewports render animation and not the render menu’s.
      It’s worth noting that EEVEE is currently only able to utilise a single gpu.

    I love to know what it would take to create breaking waves for a surfing animation.. The waves would need to break from the peak of the swell forming a barrel that peels off from the peak to the right or left.
    I know this is a major undertaking. yes?

    • @3d-illusions

      I’d use a cylinder with animated opacity maps, and then use z location to control where the shaders becomes white for the foam. Add some particles too for splashing. Or you could do a proper water sim if your time on earth isn’t important to you 😁

    I have a problem with the foam. It appears but the foam comes up shaded like kind of blocky squares. There is no detail in the foam. The edges slidly feather out but it looks like white squared clouds floating in the ocean. Any tips? Great tutorial btw! Cheers from Germany

      @3d-illusions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to increase the ocean resolution before generating the foam.

    Is it possible to make the edges a kind of transparent to blend better with sand on a beach?
    ps. your work is so impressive!

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't recommend transparency. You'd be better adding foam where it hits the shore and rocks. I show the technique to create foam around the inflatable items in part 2 (fundamentals of geometry nodes) which is available from www.3d-illusions.co.uk

    Question > if you have a rowing boat in this ocean; how would you prevent the water from penetrating the boat. For example the interior of the rowing boat would be below the ocean surface .. so the ocean would naturally ignore this fact and we would see the ocean inside the boat lol :)

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could try a mask modifier on the ocean with its position driven by the boat. Or you could render the boat in a separate viewlayer, so that when you recombine with the ocean in comp, the boat will replace the ocean.

    • @davidedwardsme
      @davidedwardsme ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@3d-illusions Yeah i cant see a geo mask working if the boat is moving. Maybe comp is the only way. It's a hypothetical question more than anything :)

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidedwardsme depends on the resolution of the ocean and thickness of the hull regarding the mask modifier I suppose. But yeah, comp is the best option because it’ll be perfect with no fuss.

    Good video but the problem is baking. It seems that one has to switch to cycles and use keyframes in order to bake an entire scene properly.

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You shouldn't need to switch to cycles to bake the foam, but you do need to use keyframes rather than #frame if you're baking out more than a single frame of foam.

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  ปีที่แล้ว

      you don't need to create the attribute at all now, it just works as soon as you add the attribute node with the same name as you specify in the ocean modifier's foam section. If you wanted to though, you could add the foam attribute in either the attribute tab of the data panel (underneath face maps), or you could add a colour attribute. Both are the same thing, except color attribute is automatically a color attribute, but attributes created in the attribute tab can be set to a color attribute or any other type of attribute (float,string,boolean, etc). In both cases make sure they're vertex attributes.

    Will you do a geometry nodes version ?

    • @3d-illusions
      @3d-illusions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I won't replace the ocean modifier with a geometry node modifier in the near future because geometry node's isn't able to grab attribute data from neighbouring vertices yet. Having said that, part 2 of this ocean tutorial is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of geometry nodes, so if you're interested in working with geometry node's, that will give you the in-depth understanding needed to build any modifier you can imagine. It's available from my Gumroad www.3d-illusions.co.uk 👍
