I'm Dutch and Sicilian. We never learned the language because my grandpa always claimed we wouldn't need it, we were mostly raised Dutch but at least I can cook Sicilian. Made provolone meatballs and Ditali alla norma yesterday. Edit: O and cassatta which my mom forgot and now I need to throw out.

now, Sicily was so often invaded and ruled by different Empires (also many Germanic, from Goth to Normans and also the Holy Roman Empire (which had German as base but also the today Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Northern Italy, parts of France/Burgundy, Switzerland, Austria, Czech etc. were part) was there - you are still kind of in the same Empire (if you mentally think yourself a bit back in time) ...

I have been to Italy twice (three times if you include a plane transfer in Milan). The first time (when I was 13) we stayed at Garda lake and I remember having a good time especially when we went to Verona and I, as a history enthusiast, was so near the remains of my then favourite era: The Roman Empire.
The second time (at 27) I went for a cycling vacation to Tsucany. There is no better way to explore the fantastic landscape of Tuscany than by bicycle. The food, the wine, architecture and on and on. It was simply wonderful.
I should really go to Italy more often.
Thank you for sharing your video Inna :)

Long time subscriber to Geography Now here. I love Italy, for some reason I always feel right at home there, and I've been an Interista for many years. My dad was a truck driver and often went to Germany or France (I'm Dutch), but whenever I went along during the school holidays when I was little he always arranged a trip to Italy. So we'd be driving during the day (and reading a bit in my case), then we'd stop and enjoy wherever we were for a bit, like swimming in the Lago Maggiore and stuff. And then around 20:00 we'd go and grab dinner. I still hardly ever eat dinner before 20:00 nowadays ('normal' dinner time here is 18:00 ish), something I kept from those times I guess😅
Best route we ever did was one where we came in from France (Briançon to Torino), went past Bologna down south across the coast, crossed the Apennines to Terni and Rieti, and then went home through Switzerland. Took a long time (we were home on saturday), but it was so beautiful. Toscana is my favorite part of Italy and we drove back north straight through there🙂
3:18 It went bankrupt a couple of years ago, but has reopened 😜

Just FYI, according to UNESCO, the highest authority on this matter, Italy has More than 60% of All Important ART(Masterpieces of Architecture, Sculptures, Paintings, etc.,etc.) in the Whole WORLD. That's 60+% of All Other Countries on Earth, Combined. ALL Other Countries have Less than 40%, Combined. Remember there is Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Creativity, Artisitry, etc. that goes into making these Masterpieces.

We're related to Frank Capra through marriage. That part of the family still lives in Bisacquino

This episode was filmed in 2017. So information could easily be outdated. I think the notable places to visit that he mentioned weren’t necessarily UNESCO sites. I think they were just lesser known places to visit.

All'epoca era veramente penoso.

Yeah, you're right about the origin of the "Terroni" word, but not only it isn't nice to use it, it's straight up offensive, very offensive. It's almost like the N word.
