Hi everyone, I really hope you enjoyed today's video! As a reminder I'm an anime-only fan so if you want to talk about spoiler please MAKE SURE to use a spoiler tag so all of the spoiler content is below the read more line. Thank you so much. :)

You're awesome, love your channel. I always had this anime dear to me. I so wanted to be sweet Tohru but now being 30 years old, my mental health has had a switch and realizing how important it is to talk about that.

Another thing to note is his hyper-composed demeanor. Which is his persistent avoidance of emotions in general.

He's definitely in the top 3 most traumatised. I won't say the other two to avoid spoilers.

Fascinating. Yuki was a life-changing character for me. I didn't suffer any of the things he went through, but I can relate a lot to the detachment he felt between himself and others, and I admire how he got through it by putting himself in situations that would force him to socialize, take an active (instead of passive) role, and to come out of his shell in general. And the way he decides to stop blaming Akito in order to move forward with his life... Simply amazing. As this video exposed, not only are his traumas and conflicts incredibly well written, but his development was inspiring and helped me out like no character ever has. Great video!

another way to look at Yuki's experience and story is through different automatic nervous system responses to danger. Yuki is like someone stuck in 'shut-down' or dorsal vagal energy (responsible for freezing in frightening situations, or feigning responses to people rather than speaking as your true self)
Kyo is like someone stuck in fight mode or 'sympathetic nervous system' energy. These are the two safety responses in poly-vagal theory - by Stephen Porges, is this covered in psych courses? I really hope so because it can be life changing!
Ideally we spend most of our time in ventral vagal energy - feeling at ease, social and feeling safe - and we only go into the other states when there is danger detected in the present moment. But sometimes people get stuck with a deep sense of not-being-safe ALL the time. This is because of negative experiences have overwhelmed their ability to cope at some point and have not been able to heal. It's in the BODY not just in your HEAD, so talking it out isn't enough, you need to find a way to let your nerves feel truely safe enough for your body to process it too)
People go into freeze states when something bad happens and they can't fight or flee because that is also too dangerous, or if they are too young to escape. It's an evolved safety response to make sure you don't get more hurt when there is a death-threat. Instead you might 'zone-out', go numb or 'spacey' (dissociate), or lose your voice. Long term it seems to be linked to depression also. It is a bit like animals 'playing dead' to try and survive something much larger than they are.
I think at the start of the story Yuki is still too closed up to even feel his feelings. He is still too numb, still just 'surviving' but appearing 'functional' to people who don't know him well because that is the safest behavior to show to avoid attention and more overwhelm. It can take a long time to undo what he went through, bit by bit, one safe person at a time... till he has enough safe connections to outweigh the bad.

This was a wonderful review of Yuki Sohma. I always related strongly to him as a child, he was my favorite character in Fruits Basket.
I won't spoil, but I really hope he will be able to recover from his trauma. It will be a very long road for him, but as his connections grow- things will hopefully get better for him.
What I find really interesting is how Ayame is trying to mend the bridge that was broken between him and Yuki, it's endlessly interesting seeing their dynamic.

I loved your analysis. It hadn't really processed for me that Yuki had PTSD, but the minute you said it I thought "Of course". It makes so much sense. Would you be open to doing similar analyses of the other Zodiac members? I'd love to see your insights as a studying counselor!

I loved this video and I think it's one of your best. :) Using criteria from the DSM-5 was brilliant and the clips you used to illustrate each point were so helpful.

Nice vid! You're the only one I've seen that talks about Fruits Basket ♡
Since the beginning I knew Yuki wasn't okay, and tbh I really hope he get over it, i know it's a long way, but i swear I'd love to see Yuki truly smiling leaving his past away... :"3

And with all this, you have to wonder what doing stuff when it’s dark in his room is like. He must have some form of candle or something going just to make sure he’s never in a room that dark ever again.

Really enjoyed this vid! I think, no spoilers, we can see Yuki is on his way to developing a lot through the series! Though you didn't touch on his interactions/reactions to/with Kyo, I think they are a big part of his development as well, just from what we've seen until now! Hope you can do this type of video for other Fruits Basket characters if you want in the future!

    • @ThoughtBubbleYT
      @ThoughtBubbleYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I definitely have a couple in mind that I might want to do something like this for! And yeah, I did definitely steer clear of his interactions with Kyo because I felt as though while you're 110% right they are very important to his development, I personally didn't see the direct correlation between them and the proposed PTSD. And I'm definitely going to be looking at doing this again for more characters so keep your eyes peeled! :)

I agree with much of what you labeled Yuki with, John. 👍 This was REFRESHING!! DO you take anime character requests for this topic? If so, my choices are Tsukasa Shishiō and Senkū Ishigami
(Dr Stone), Kairi Okayasu and Sae (Peach Girl), Uchiha Sasuke/Itachi and Hatake Kakashi (Naruto), Usui Takumi, Aoi-chan and Honoka (Kaichou wa Maid-sama), Mafuyu Satō (Given), Soichiro Arima (His and Her Circumstances), Kikyo (InuYasha), Chika (Kaguya-sama: Love is War), &/or Misa Amane and Mello (Death Note). If you do anime movies, I humbly request an analysis of Yuzuru Nishimiya, Naoka Ueno, Tomohiro Nagatsuka and Miki Kawai (A Silent Voice).
    Plz & ty!! 🙏🥺🙏
    If not, that's fine. 👍
