Fruits Basket has some worst and some best parents.

Ain't that the truth! We met some parents who actually love their kids who posses the Zodiac spirits while some instead want to erase their memories like Momiji's mother for example but we know her situation or use them just to get to the same level has the higher up Sohma's like what Scum was doing and we recently saw Yuki's mother in a flashback in the beginning of Season 2 so we know that she used Yuki to get a better living situation cuz he's the Rat but there were signs of abuse in those flashbacks so she wasn't a good parent to both Yuki or Ayame.

The difference between these two fathers is exactly how the old proverb goes.
It's not "blood is thicker than water," it actually goes "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the waters of the womb," which means the bonds formed by choice are much stronger than those formed by birth.
Family doesn't mean shit if they don't truly care about you.
Hot DAMN I love this anime!!!

The situation between Kazuma and Scum teaches us that blood relations do not make a family bond and that true family bonds are built on unconditional love, mutual understanding, and trust.

Family doesn't have to be people you're blood related. You can make your own.
As the show goes on, we see that parents in the Soma clan aren't all great and loving. There are some, like Kisa's mother, but they may not be the majority.
I loved that episode and this scene was great. I feel bad for Kyo's father, knowing he never move on from his wife death. But Kazuma is right and he prove again how much a father he is in comparison. I want to see more of them, and I know we will

BriThi Me, fearfully wondering what Yuki’s parents are like 👀 Based on what we’ve seen of Yuki’s past so far and all that he’s been through, it seems as though either his parents weren’t around much, or didn’t care much. Although them not being around much is basically the same 😔 but Yuki deserved betterrrrrrrr

Scum was largely to blame for his wife's death. However, because Scum shows nearly all the hallmark signs of a malignant narcissist, he constantly blames his own failings on others, particularly his own son. Narcissists are incapable of seeing any flaw in themselves, which makes them dangerous and volatile. Scum abused his wife for giving birth to a son possessed by the clan outcast, and rather than admit any flaw or failing, decided that he was the victim and deserved to take out his frustrations on anyone available. We never see Scum after this 3-minute glimpse, but I cannot help but wonder what spiral of torment he collapsed into once the curse was broken.

Wow, great job on this analysis. I love your take on the symbolism, and the difference between the manga and anime. Here's another take on something - the teacups, your take on the symbolism of their emotions was totally right, but I additionally felt that the way they handled their teacups, was they way each treated Kyo's heart. Watch the motions - Kazuma holds his gently and protectively, and gets to enjoy what's within, while Scum knocked his over so fast and carelessly you hardly saw it happen. What do you think of that?

    • @BriThi

  • @FloraRed

YES oh my gosh this analysis is so well done. BEAUTIFUL. Thank you for making this! Someone commented about the "broken record" metaphor in one of my Fruits Basket manga/anime comparison videos, which is something I didn't see and you totally hit the nail on the head! The tea cup metaphor was in the manga but I was curious why they added the record player/classical music. But I think it's a great addition to the anime because it adds more to the moment and symbolizes that Kyo's biological father (scum) literally is a broken record - repeating "It's not my fault", being a broken person that's stuck in the past, never moving past his anger and grief. It's so fascinating what an anime can portray in ways the manga can't. Thanks again for the awesome video!
