  • Fruits Basket Season 2 Cour 2 is here, and it came with a breathtaking ED. My girlfriend, Ali, loves flowers and their symbolism across different cultures, so it's only fitting that she would do a full analysis of each plant in the ending credits!
If you love our little "Symbolism Time with Ali" segments in our Fruits Basket Podcast, then this is the video for you. She breaks down each and every plant by comparing them to statements Takaya has made in the TokyoPop translation of Volume 14, the lunisolar calendar, and Hanafuda cards.
Huge thank you to the amazing community we have around us. With their help, we were able to confirm some of our theories and find out more about the ones we missed. Join the conversation on Twitter to stay in the loop and help us craft future theories about symbolism!

I think that Tohru’s kimono and hairpiece is super important in that she personifies sunlight from the inside out, as opposed to Kimi who can only fake her sunny disposition (her voice when she punches Kakeru shows how under her veneer she is different). In the shot from last weeks episode I think that the borders of the flowers didn’t overlap with her uniform so they’re surrounding her but not a part of her and that just blew my mind when the thought to contrast Kimi’s sunflowers and Tohru’s sunflowers occurred to me. 😊

I think you missed this: Kureno is holding a red cloth which looks to be the same colour and texture of the shroud that Akito is wearing over his/her Kimono. This good imply how loyal Kureno is how much he is influenced by Akito.

Oh my days, Ali I love the way you think about all of this. The most shocking to me was the connection between Kyo and Tohru because ever since like epsidoe 10 or something around there, Ive been leaning more towards Kyo with Tohru because there was something just different about the way Yuki seemed to feel about her that just seem right and episode 21/22 definitely cleared up why

Yuki’s name is pronounced like the Japanese word for snow so that is one interpretation you can get from it. However, it is not written like snow. The kanji for snow is 雪. The kanji for Yuki’s name is 由希. 由 means ‘a reason’ and 希 means ‘hope’. The more accurate meaning of Yuki’s name is ‘a reason to hope’.

A few things I want to add: They are heavily inspired by hanafuda. Haru has a red moon, because the light of the pine is a crane with a red sun in the background. Kureno holds a red scarf, because the light of the cherry blossoms is a curtain. Rin has butterflies on her kimono, because the peony has a butterfly card. Behind Ritsu is actually Susuki grass, not rice. The moon and the red sky come from the light of the cards and there is another card with 3 birds on it, therefore the 3 birds in the background. Momiji holds the sake cup, a card from the crysanthemums of hanafuda. Kagura has an umbrella, because the willow has a special card showing a man with an umbrella on it.

    • @mollytovxx4181
      @mollytovxx4181 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Yes, Ritsu is standing in front of 薄の穂 or ears of susuki. It's also known as obana or Japanese pampas grass (one of the 7 autumn flowers) and is used in decorations for the autumn festival Tsukimi. This is a festival for viewing the harvest moon so it makes sense that the moon is featured behind Ritsu in this image.
As I was reading about this I came across some Japanese haikus and proverbs that reference dried susuki/obana. My Japanese is not very good but the feeling conveyed is similar to "being afraid of your own shadow". Overreacting to small things and so being afraid.
Here is an example for those who can read Japanese better than me: 落ち武者は薄の穂にも怖ず

Ritsu appears to be wearing a junihitoe.

I ADORE symbolism time with Ali! Thanks for your hard work. About Kyo and bamboo. One of the main characteristics of bamboo is resilience. There is a saying that bamboo bends but doesn't break. So when I saw Kyo related to bamboo that reminded me of Kyo wish for death, how many times he heard he'd be better of dead, but he still endured, he still clinged to life which makes him feel guilty. But like Kazuma said, he's unable to totally give up because he has still hope. And hope is symbolized as a flower for Kyo. So Kyo reaching up for the sunflower aka Thoru is the source of his bamboo resilience.
    Signed: Grace.

I believe June's flower that was shown with Isuzu (Rin) is a lotus. Lotus flower is called Ren in Japanese and symbolizes purification, according how it blooms into a beautiful pure flower from a dirty, murky water. If we think about this symbolization, it fits with how she desires to break Hatsuharu free from the curse and basically cleanse everyone. I also think Hatsuharu is holding lotus petals in the beginning as well :))

This was a great explanation but here is some of the things I think you missed out on
About Hatori with the eclipse I think it's more like what he's going through after Kana its symbolising that this is just an eclipse and he's not going to be in darkness forever ......... That Mayu is waiting for him on the other side of the eclipse
Hiro's unrequited or one sided love symbolises his relationship with Kisa
Also with Ritsu in the hanafuda August is depicted with Susuki grass which is a type of pampas grass with the full moon symbolising enlightenment so maybe it's just fields of grass
Also with the Maples they are also one of the biggest symbols of fall, maple viewing is a common practice which is the same as the viewing of Sakura. The symbolism with maples and Shigure along with meaning beauty and grace they also symbolise peace, serenity, practicality and a balanced life showing how everything Shigure does is sort of balanced, planned and practical.
Lastly about Yukis symbolism with the bellflowers apart from being the flower of his month they also mean love and most importantly friendship symbolising how Yuki is talking to other people more and making new friends

In flower language the bush clover represents; Meditation(since Hiro is always self-conscious and trying to improve himself ), bashfulness, affection, positive love (for Kisa's sake and well-being as well as for his mom and little sister) and flexible spirit (as he finally accepted Tohru despite his rivalry and was able to successfully free himself from Akito's bond).

My favorite parts of this analysis was the Kyo and Tohru romantic symbolism their images represent. Now, somebody on Tumblr did mention the romantic connotations that the 2 images represented, but the fact that you added to the images symbolism for both Kyo and Tohru is mind blowing!
*SPOILERS FROM THE MANGA DOWN BELOW*
Also, by the end of the manga, we see an old Kyo and Tohru walk off hand-in-hand. In that shot, kyo wears a kimono very similar to the one in the ED, and though we only see Tohru's skirt before it's cut by a sweater, her dress/kimono looks similar to her kimono in the ED. And tho they are surrounded by different flowers in that picture from the manga, it is kind of reminiscent to the setting around Tohru in the ED. So what if Kyo and Tohru's images are a type of foreshadow to that final manga picture we see of them? And I know this next thing I say is as bit morbid and sad, but what these images represent what happens to Kyo and Tohru after they pass on? Like, maybe this is their reunion after the fact and they are young again and Tohru is reaching out to him so they can be together again? Wow, I just made myself sad😢😭

Okay, Love this analysis! I think I realized something kind of significant regarding Yuki's flower.
SPOILER ALERT. SPOILERS FROM THE MANGA. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED PLEASE DO NOT READ.
    ...
    ....
    .....
    ....
    ...
You mentioned that his flower, coming from the Paulownia tree, is usually planted when a baby GIRL is born into an elite family. Here is why this is significant:
You pointed out that Yuki is facing Akito while holding a white rose, almost like an act of devotion or obedience towards God (which was a lovely catch but he way!). But I think it isn't just that Yuki is "facing" Akito; to me, it strongly seemed that Yuki and Akito were actually MIRRORING each other. Of course the flowers are different and so is the color scheme, but despite this the flowers in the background are arranged quite similarly! They're even holding their own flowers in a similar fashion. In this way, I think the creators of this ending wanted to bring attention to how similar and how different these characters are.
I think these two were meant to mirror in a contrasting manner: Yuki as this pure, white follower, and Akito as this dark and corrupt ruler.
So why is this significant information about the Paulownia flower? Because! This actually foreshadows really important information about Akito (that hasn't been revealed in the anime yet). It isn't a secret that Yuki is regarded as very feminine in appearance, perhaps he was even mistaken for a girl a lot.
So, just like how Yuki (a boy) is often mistaken for a girl, Akito (Yuki's mirroring image), has been mistaken for a boy despite being a girl (Even though that's because she was made to live her life as boy and has kept her identity as a girl a secret). They are both opposites and exactly the same simultaneously.
AH. I didn't not realize how intentional it was that Yuki was made to look feminine. I screamed when I realized this. The people who made this ending are true geniuses. Truly, chef's kiss.

My fav panel of all is prolly Shigure’s-look at him surrounded with a sea of falling maple leaves in the background which symbolizes autumn or fall. Fall in Japanese means Aki, so we can indirectly say that Shigure loves Aki(to)🥰
I also love that in Akito’s panel, she is holding a “specific Camellia.” We can infer it is probably a flower that means most to Akito (which is highly likely to be a gift from Shigure in one of the scenes in anime). Awww maybe I am overthinking this, but I love these two the most💕

14:40 although hiro does not have unrequited love, he made himself feel that way when we first learned about him. he was jealous of tohru because kisa gave her all attention thus made him feel like kisa x him was a one sided relationship.
20:30 kagura, i felt bad that her love wasn't reciprocated although i prefer it that way. not because i like kyo x tohru more but because of kyo x kagura's dynamic in depth.

Also if you listen to the english translation of the ed song, you can see some of the lyrics match with the characters. For example:
Kyo: "Goodbye, tomorrow won't come back, This is my wish I leave with you" It basically means that tomorrow in the shigure household won't come when he gets locked up in the cage, he's saying goodbye. His wish is to leave with "you" aka Tohru but he knows he can't have her.
Kureno: "I won't cry, no matter what happens. Because somewhere we'll see each other again" This one is that is that Kureno will stay strong and try not to cry over remembering Arisa, because he tries to believe maybe they will meet each other again somewhere.
Hatori: "So I'm not afraid, wipe up those tears, Loving doesn't make you feel lonely" This means that he will stay strong and not be afraid (like now he barely shows emotions and tries to look cold) the tears part idk maybe for kana when she kept crying and feeling guilty for hatori's injury. Loving made him feel wanted and not lonely. (yet after that incident he was very lonely, these lyrics are kinda like emotional support for someone)
Ayame: "So I look ahead and walk as usual, so I can live for someone" Despite his past struggles he looks ahead and tries to change his future, he creates outfits and sells them in his shop. He walks as usual being cool and flamboyant. So I can live for someone is probably for Mine
Rin: "I know its hard, but it won't work unless you try" Rin tries really hard to break the curse and free everyone. She knows its hard but she keeps trying
Kyoko: "I am trying to search for the meaning of why I was born." pretty sure in the manga Kyoko was a troublemaker in her school and she couldn't find the meaning of why she was born.
Momiji: "Be just the way you are, so i can smile and I can live, only for you" This shows the love momiji has for Tohru. He always smiles whenever she's there and he also forces it sometimes for her.
I know how long this is but yeah this is just my thoughts.

With Ayame, I would also assume that his month and flower determined how his character would be. He’s nothing like Yuki-whenever he enters a room, he’s like a breath of fresh air because he lightens you’re mood in some way. There’s no way Ayame would storm into a room in the way that he does and you wouldn’t immediately turn your attention to him 😂 At least for a moment, that’s a form of his clarity.
Also, his difference from Yuki is that he’s not seen as important as Yuki is. Yuki’s the rat; the rat is the most important. But Aya came before him. So imagine how regular their lives must have been because Aya was a “normal” level of the Zodiac, whereas Yuki is closest to god, Kyo is never allowed to experience everything that the only other people in existence experience, and the others (other than Haru) are just background characters. So once Yuki came along, they moved from ok to the top of the top (remember how the maids were talking about how lavishly his parents were living for giving Yuki to Akito). Aya is also known to more than razzle their mom; she’s also comes undone because she can’t control him and Yuki is extremely docile. May is also when the “summer” months start, as in when it starts to get warmer and everything. (And Yuki is snow) Fireworks, cookouts with family and friends, good times.
And don’t even get me started on how he has the flower in his hands like that 😅 He’s the snake of the zodiac and in Christian Theology, the snake brought temptation. Aya owns a shop where he what he sells is taboo.
So yeah, I think there was quite a bit more imagery that could be pulled from Ayame’s pic. But overall, I really, really enjoyed you guyses video!

  • @sarahtonin07
    @sarahtonin07 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Also, in regards to the camellia blossom Akito is holding:
It's like that episode of Soul Eater, the one where Tsubaki faces off against her brother, the Enchanted Sword. Tsubaki's name means the camellia blossom. It is a flower without fragrance, and when it falls, it is quietly tragic.
*(This part of the comment contains minor spoilers to the Fruits Basket narrative⬇)*
I think that can mean a lot for Akito as well. She is holding onto the curse because she is afraid of "falling" alone, and that would be tragic. Without fragrance could mean how she sees herself, maybe bland, lacking in other things, or lacking in actual relationships.

But... but the blossoms look like balloon flowers! Honestly, Yuki is an exception to the naming convention anyway, so I think we can let your interpretation slide! :D

Because I still confuse about this part😆

    • @daisybrain9423
      @daisybrain9423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@rismawati-du9wq Most zodiacs' personal names are taken from archaic Japanese names for the twelve months, each of which also corresponds with a zodiac. For example, the month of the Tiger is February, and its old name is "kisaragi", and it is from this word where Kisa gets her name. The order of the zodiacs when associated with the months is also the same order as the zodiac cycle, starting with the Rat in December, then the Ox in January, and so forth.
Now, the month of the Rabbit is March, and the month of the Rooster is September. By Takaya's mistake, however, Momiji's name actually comes from September, and Kureno's name comes from March. So basically, by the logic of the other names, Kureno's name is actually "supposed to be" Momiji and vice versa.
This ending shows the characters by the order of the months their names are from, so starting with Hatsuharu as January. But the usual order of the zodiac is broken up because we see Kureno as March and Momiji as September, even though March is the Rabbit's month and September the Rooster's.
I hope that was coherent and made at least a little sense ^^

I hadn’t even gotten to looking at the lyrics yet, I was so excited about the flowers. I’ll have to read them, thanks for letting me know! And thanks for the kind words too 💕

@@BashfulRosesASMR Oh, that's okay. I found the lyrical video just after watching this. It's true that the first thing that catches one's eyes are the dresses and of course, the beautiful flowers and grass(😂). Take your time and thanks for responding.

Prior to this video, I just thought that the character backgrounds were just from the hanafuda cards. That is why I was able to tell Kisa's flower because the design looked a lot like one of the February hanafuda cards. (oops, I commented this before you got to the hanafuda part)

I think it's funny that the symbolism for Kureno and Momiji's months and flowers kinda fits both boys.

Also one thing with ritsu’s picture- the giant, golden moon could be interpreted as the harvest moon, which is when the moon becomes abnormally large and yellow during the fall when crops are ready to harvest

One thing I noticed that you didn’t point out is that it looks like Kyoko is also surrounded by fireflies which I believe represent the souls of the dead in Japan

I thought those were butterflies...since her nickname from her delinquent days was crimson butterfly?

Rin is pretty much the apotheosis of the "try not to cry, roll over, cry a lot" memes. Can't wait for the next episode.
