16 inch canal guardian...gun made for the Lexington and saratoga in their origonal designations as Battlecruisers before the Washington naval treaty. Never installed as they were redesigned as carriers, they served as shore batteries around coast ports and Panama.

It looks like a bit of propaganda, which isn't necessarily bad. Shows the patriotic attitudes in those days. The artwork is in the style of the times; very heroic!

Plan Orange, was the navy plan to fight the Japanese fleet. After Pearl, if was never used.

The helmets in the first comic were accurate, especially for the Marine Corps, right up to the US entry into the war.

Yes the helmet was called the M1917A1. As mentioned the M1 helmet didn't see service until 1942 and the Marines used the m1903 until 42 at first the higher ups in the corps didn't trust the Garand plus concern over wasting ammo but once the Marines were relieved by the army they started to aquire them and the rate of fire, capacity and reliability won over the higher ups

@@anaetachandler8699 "5 finger discounts" became something of a 'National pastime" on Guadalcanal. And who could blame the 1 st ? That division got left behind after the battle of Savo island, and half their supplies went with the retreating Cargo ships. I'd imagine, for a while a LOT of captured Japanese stuff got employed, just to save a bit on 30-06 ammo.

The flat hats were still standard issue up through 42. Depression era budget cuts even saw Marines issued with 1903 Springfield bolt action rifles as late as August 1942, [ Guadalcanal.], in Divisional strength, even though the M-1 garand appeared in 1936, and the water cooled M 1917 Machine gun still hadn't been replaced with the air cooled m-1919 yet. Army in the Phillipenes, had the same gear.

Wow, thanks for all the great info! I was curious about the 16 inch canal guardian. There's so much to learn here.

@@panzerdeal8727 DC war titles are very under appreciated, but there is a very strong (albeit small) group of avid collectors. My next episode is actually on Enemy Ace, probably my favorite DC war feature.

Washington Naval treaty set size and number limits by country. Pretty much public knowledge in a vain hope to avoid a war.
