  • Limon Costa Rica ,Where do most black people live in Costa Rica?
How did black people end up in Costa Rica?,
Were African slaves brought to Costa Rica?,
What is the history of Limon Costa Rica?,
    Are Costa Ricans black?,
Why are so many Americans moving to Costa Rica?
Currently most of the Afro-Costa Rican population lives in small communities within the Caribbean Coast Province of Limon. In the City of Limón, where a third of the population is Afro-Costa Rican, the community has remained separate in barrios which are 90 per cent black.

Costa Rica had slaves from 1502 until it was abolished in 1824. Then the Jamaicans came after 1824 to legally work.
So, blacks were for the most part always in Costa Rica from the very beginning (After the Natives of course).
So do know Fredrick, there is more than what you are saying. The blacks in Costa Rica are not all descendants from Jamaica.

As a dark Costa Rican, I just don't understand this blackness thing among African Americans. I keenly aware of my West African roots. For many of us, we consider ourselves as having courage in mutiny and having our freedoms in Central America. Our anscestors are not cowards. That said, I prefer being treated as a man, who happens to be dark. My melanin levels does not dictate my perception of thw world and how others treat me.

And it very much does affect how we are treated. There is nothing wrong with them saying they feel more comfortable around darker skinned people. It makes us feel like less of an outcast and like we are not being judged. Mostly white spaces in america have proven to be unsafe for many black. African Americans, along with many people of color are discriminated. There is nothing wromg with mentioning "blackness ". I often here the argument " why do americans make everything about race". Well goven our history, everything has been made about race from the begining and we cant escape that.

Marwa, one of the reasons the prices are high is because there are a lot of Westerners especially Americans and Canadians that retire there. So when you get such a huge influx of well to do people that generally pushes prices up to the detriment of locals as wages will never rise fast enough. Latin America like Africa has high income inequality so it appears to me that even though they may be inflows of foreign capital most of that goes into a few connected hands and business people. I agree with you that people seem to find happiness everyday in Latin America even with little resources. Something that the Western world could learn from.

it's not so safe, you need to be careful, but if you avoid walking at night in bad areas and avoid displaying luxury watches or something like that, you can go around pretty smoothly. Most of the crime is gang-drug related, only a small portion is assaults to people. But you need to be careful. I have been to barrio Roosvelt few times and never had problems. Marwa the racial composition of Limon has changed drastically in the last 30 years. The city and even the province of Limon was very very black at the beginning of the century. Then the influx of people from Guanacaste and Nicaragua has changed that. Many blacks have move out of the country looking for better opportunities in the US. So now Limon is mostly Latino with a few blacks. Jamaican English was widely spoken but now the young people can barely speak it. Lots of interracial marriages has changed the city also. As for crime is much worse in the capital San Jose. Limon just have a bad rap because of racist attitude of the majority who still thinks Limon is still a black town. .

By the way, this is an excellent video. We appreciate you taking us to Limon and focusing on the African diaspora in such an easygoing manner. One of the things that intrigues me about many Latin American/Caribbean video blogs is the general scarcity of traffic control signals - red lights and walk/don't walk signals - in comparison to places in North America. The ubiquitous traffic controls there contribute to road safety while also causing driver frustration and, on occasion, traffic violations. It would be fascinating to drive on road systems where traffic flow seems mostly unhindered by such technology as appears to be the case in Limon.

I took an African Dance class in this awesome city while I was on tour with a ballet company. It was a phenomenal experience! We had our performance later and the hosts threw this big dinner for us afterwards. Coconut milk straight from the coconut and of course some amazing salads and beans n rice. People came in right off the street to join us; it was very free and open. One little boy came in for a plate of food and told our teacher he was ashamed to be so hungry. Our teacher told him, "ah, no shame! Come and eat!" That was the vibe there. The priorities were on connection with others.

I'm Costa Rican. Mom is Spaniard descent; my dad is Afro-Caribbean from Jamaica making me a Mulatto. Pop's fam moved down to Costa Rica just like you explained. The railroads were getting built and the money was better than anything in Jamaica. Grandpa McIntosh parents moved down for work. Today, I'm extremely proud to have those hard-working roots. Costa Rica is a big mix of cultures and the Caribbean influences is strong. Thanks for the video.

In Limón they also speak "criollo limonense" (also know as patua and Mekatelyu) wich is a mix english similar to jamaican and a little of french. Very unique.
Thanks for showing my country as it is, no filters. Pura Vida 🇨🇷❤️

I visited this chilled out place in Dec 2022. I think that there has been a blending of many African Caribbean people since they first arrived.
Certainly all to the African Costa Rican people I approached were very warm welcoming and spoke fluent English.
Lots of African American/ Caribbean history, around Marcus Garvey and his movement of freedom.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in this region.
