Very sorry this happened! When it's your own car, things can get very stressful for sure. The good thing is, you've been there before and know that car very well. It's definitely making a very informative video! Thanks for posting this one! Can't wait for part 2.
Hey thanks man. Much appreciated. Yes I had the other cylinder head redone after the valve spring break. Now in retrospect I probably should have had this side done too but I really, really didn’t want to do two heads.
I just woke up, bad day for all of us, the trans am has been our helper in the diagnosis series. I hope is nothing serious 😢. The rocker arm must been gone I think. We are praying while waiting for parte. Best of luck!!
Matt, Hello you got me there when u mentioned the bad GAS in the tank as always good approach and thought process hopefully will be a small problem that u can solve easily thanks for sharing cheeeeers.
Damn Matt, your life seems like mine when there is always something to go awry. Sorry to hear the engine is having some issues. I'm sure you'll get it all sorted out and hopefully, it won't be too expensive. Have safe travels.
You mentioned at 14:09 about a timing chain jumping teeth would only affect one bank.. that wouldn't be true for a single cam engine. It would affect all cylinders. Also, your relative compression test shows "high compression" for cylinder 3... keep in mind its companion cylinder, which is #2, can have an exhaust valve not opening. This would make the starter work harder and draw more amperage - as 3 is comping up on compression, so is cylinder 2 if its exhaust valve isn't working.
Ha yes you are correct! I totally didn’t think about the single cam- I am so used to two cams that my car is the only one I ever see with single cam any more!!!
Bad gas can happen! A year or so ago I finished up a car at work, sales team took the car to fill it with gas, it came back on a flatbed. Although unlike this case, the engine wouldn't even stay running. Drained fuel and the fuel was FULL of water.
I guess I would have been suspicious at all those vehicles stranded within a few yards of the Gas station if their tank was dispensing water contaminated gas.
Haha yeah I’m not sure if that was the case or not. If I remember correctly the fuel pump sounded very weak which is what pointed to the fuel direction
I filled my truck up and minutes after leaving the station it ran crappy - went home, removed the fuel filter and pumped out a coke bottle full of gas and tested it, over 50% water so it does happen
In all fairness, since this is the second major issue with the valve train, I can't help but wonder if there is a valve spring coil binding event taking place. The machinist would have no idea unless he or she knows your exact valve lift from your camshaft. Then by calculating the lift, pushrod length and rocker arm ratio, then measuring valve spring collapsed length and spring shim thickness, they might come up with a suggestion.
I totally agree. I actually have a meeting with the best machinist I know and will bring the engine blueprint and have him look and make recommendation on what may be going here.
Hahaha that’s exactly what I call it too- a hot air popcorn popper lol!!!! It’s such a stupid mod and demonstrates total ignorance and incompetence. It’s one of the worst things you can do to an engine that there is.
You said that you weren’t sure if the cylinder was higher than normal compression or the only one that was normal. But I can’t imagine any sort of scientific explanation of mechanical failure that would cause higher compression?
so strange that 2 cylinders had a simultaneous failure. I'm wondering if any of the weird pressures disturbed a head gasket with neighboring cylinders on same bank. I'm not used to thinking pushrod valves... i usually am thinking along the lines of a DOHC setup. Potentially 2 chains for like a modern v6. But in this case, I don't know much about the LS v8 setup. It will be an interesting series.
yeah i don’t think we have a head gasket issue here because the loss of compression on 5 is explained by the missing intake valve activity and there is high compression on 3.
freaking kilmer, I dont know how many times ive had people bring him up. It's like the last thing a doctor wants to hear is you read something on web MD.
Oh wow yeah I never thought of that but boy I can imagine!!! I actually have learned to appreciate the guy- he actually can make things easier for guys like us if you think about it. By the time a Scotty viewer brings me his car it already had plugs, wires, coils, O2 sensors, fuel pump, injectors, MAF, MAP, EGR….. I get to rule out like 75% of the components right away hahahahaha!!!!
Seeing that super high spike @11:20 I was think bent exhaust valve, but of course, that's an inexperienced quick guess. I can't imagine how a valve would suddenly NOT open... looking forward to part 2.
Oh my gosh I sure hope. I really don’t want to go through that again. It took almost half a day just to do the header alone when I had to do the other side a few years ago.
Hahahaha it worked!!!!!! Yeah I knew you guys would be like “what the hell is he talking about” hahahahaha!!!! I was waiting for someone to say something!!!
no i know for a fact the valve stems are solid. they may not have been originally, but the engine rebuild included solid ones. i like your idea of a pushrod that slipped past the rocker.
6:00 wow that sounds bad do you think its a mechanical issue? (for those reading this i have already watched the video im majking a sarcastic joke you will see why in the next 5 mins lol)
I had just finished one of your previous videos where you mentioned listening to “Car Talk” on the radio for information during your search for knowledge. If only I had started watching you, maybe I could have been a better hobbyist by now.
Yeah car talk- what a joke hahaha. My methods work for me. I am no longer a hobbyist- I am about 2 years away from doing this part time but sustain a full time salary enough to carry me through retirement.

How could a broken spring explain valve not opening? Looks more like a broken rocker, bent pushrod or something like that.
I just woke up, bad day for all of us, the trans am has been our helper in the diagnosis series. I hope is nothing serious 😢. The rocker arm must been gone I think. We are praying while waiting for parte. Best of luck!!
Very much appreciated!! I do expect the rocker arm to be displaced from the pushrod. Hopefully it’s minor!!
Wow that's amazing, I'm pleased you're showing us a real world issue, especially on your own vehicle, good education 🤙🤙
Matt, Hello you got me there when u mentioned the bad GAS in the tank as always good approach and thought process hopefully will be a small problem that u can solve easily thanks for sharing cheeeeers.
Gracias por sus videos
Oh geez. Eric O incoming to poke fun in 3 , 2,
It's got the big five-seven!
Oh man you said exactly what I was thinking with firing order! I love being "that guy!"
Hahahahaha. I think my impression is spot on lol!!!!
Damn Matt, your life seems like mine when there is always something to go awry. Sorry to hear the engine is having some issues. I'm sure you'll get it all sorted out and hopefully, it won't be too expensive. Have safe travels.
Thanks Terry!!! I’m really hoping it’s just a pushrod that slipped past the rocker. But as soon as I fix this we’ll get right back to your software!!!
Have a safe and good trip 👍✈️
Thank you!! would much rather fix my car though haha!’n

Scotty not gone like that...🤣
I wonder how many people heard the gas thing, immediately cut the video, and went and did that lol.
Hahahaha. My guess is about 6million did ROTF!!!
I filled my truck up and minutes after leaving the station it ran crappy - went home, removed the fuel filter and pumped out a coke bottle full of gas and tested it, over 50% water so it does happen
Sounds really Lean there Bernie
Yeah it only gets worse too :-(
Scotty is the man 😎

Hey thanks love it big guy how hard is it to change a cylinoid

In the UK we call those exhaust pop maps ‘popcorn’ maps. Awful things 😝. Sorry to see you’re having issues with your motor.
Hahaha that’s exactly what I call it too- a hot air popcorn popper lol!!!!

@@SchrodingersBoxexactly!

A longer intake stroke would do it. More air into cylinder.
Would a catch can, prevent the carbon layer seen on the back of one valve ?
Always entertaining and informative. Good job on a sweet ride.

Nice video. Sorry it happened to your car.
Thanks. I will restore it soon enough!!
Houston, we have a problem...
hahahahaha. oh yeah. i just hope it doesn’t require cylinder head removal. really don’t want to do that again.
A dislocated rocker/follower could explain this, AND not involve head removal.
That’s exactly what I am hoping for!!!
How do I get an access to the paid channel?

@SchrodingersBox actually, if they use aftermarket, crap parts, they may have added several more problems the car didn't have to begin with!
Seeing that super high spike @11:20 I was think bent exhaust valve, but of course, that's an inexperienced quick guess. I can't imagine how a valve would suddenly NOT open...
looking forward to part 2.
A bent valve would cause low or no pressure, could be a bad lifter, pushrod or camlobe
Hopefully the issue will not involve removing a cylinder head to fix!

I am sorry for your trans AM
It's a great car
I wish I can help my friend
Thank Ayman!! Whatever the case is, I will fix it even if it means a new cylinder head.

I absolutely HATE crackle tunes.
Totally with ya on that!!!
2:49 You did catch me off guard, I thought that was a bit weird you started with bad gas as a first check :D Did not seem like you at all
Hahahaha it worked!!!!!! Yeah I knew you guys would be like “what the hell is he talking about” hahahahaha!!!!
I was waiting for someone to say something!!!
Bad lifter, or knocked a rocker arm off, maybe?
May as well throw the pushrod on the list...Is this LS from the era that had weird (hollow?) pushrods?
Correction, that wasn't pushrods, it was hollow valve stems.
no i know for a fact the valve stems are solid. they may not have been originally, but the engine rebuild included solid ones.

Go ahead and erase it. You will not find bad gas. Ever. It’s a myth.
