  • Since becoming full time liveaboards on our sail boat, Adam has always planned for us to be practising something so that should the time come for us to need to do something, then we know how to do it rather than feeling anxious and unsure of what to do. These sessions can range from learning how to hove to, to jibing, to using our hydrovane, to testing our storm sailing. The list goes on. Well it may not always sound like fun, he has a point and so over the summer we will be doing more of these sessions so that we both feel confident and secure in what we need to do, should we need to. We'll film these practice sessions and we've decided to call them Skipper's boot camp. If you like this idea and would like to see more of these videos then please let us know in the comments.
    We hope you enjoy it!
As always, from the crew of Te Tāiko, thanks for watching.
Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’re Adam and Vicki. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages.
With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment.
Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters.

I have a 84 Chico 40 Le Genevieve, in the Marlborough Sounds. Enjoying watching your videos, very similar interior from what I can tell. It used to be Cat 1. We love it, bulletproof boats.

Wow that’s cool we love hearing from other Chico owners! Thanks so much for commenting and we will keep an eye out for you on Le Genevieve!
      All the best,

Great video. As an armchair sailor, bootcamp videos would be interesting to gain an understanding of sailing. Also an explanation of terms like broad reach would be very helpful. Thanks.

Good vid thanks. I'm working out what to do for my boat ie a fourth reef point in the main or buy a trisail. Any thoughts? I see some people install a separate track for the trisail but I'm not sure what's wrong with using the existing mainsail track which is how I think you were doing it. I suppose advantage of the separate mainsail track is you can have the sail up on the cabin top all ready to go plus you can set the thing lower down the mast lowering the center of effort slightly. Disadvantage would be the extra track riveted on the outside of the mast might be a potential point of failure.

Thanks for your comment and question. We were having a new main made so we had four reefing points put in, the fourth is about the same area as the trysail. For the trysail we had a track fitted so that like you say the sail can be set up and used independently of the main. I think the main issue for sharing a track would be having to remove the mainsail to fit the trysail - that isn’t easy even at the dock let alone if preparing for heavy weather at sea. I would recommend going the extra mile to have dedicated storm sails (with a separate trysail track) so you know you have options. Thanks again for watching! Cheers Adam
