  • Welcome to another Skipper's Boot Camp video. If you are a New Zealand registered sailboat, in order to leave New Zealand waters by boat, we have to meet our Category 1 requirements (known as Cat 1). Cat 1 has pretty stringent requirements (we believe for good reasons) and requires both boat and crew to be prepared to leave New Zealand and cross an ocean. One of the requirements is that we had to attend a sea survival course. We really enjoyed this course and think anyone who is buying a boat should be doing this course. We thought we knew a lot...but we didn't really...and it made us really start to think about our safety at sea. Fortunately for me, I have Adam and if you have been following us for a while, he takes our safety very seriously and is a firm believer that we are better to practice and become familiar with our safety systems and how to do things, rather than having to figure it out in a worse case scenario. So after this course, we decided it was time to go through our safety systems and practice our man overboard drill. With it just being the two of us, knowing how to rescue each other single-handed is paramount. Until the filming of this video, I (Vicki) was unfamiliar with all our safety systems and I was always worried what I'd do if I was on my own. This is why we practice.
    We hope you enjoy it!
As always, from the crew of Te Tāiko, thanks for watching.
Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’re Adam and Vicki. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages.
With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment.
Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters.

Please drop the dance party music for what most would consider a serious topic. (at least even out recording volume levels)

@tubeyerself2 thank you for watching and for taking the time to make a comment on our man overboard video. We disagree with you that the music is inappropriate (or that it diminishes from the seriousness of the topic) and of course we take the topic seriously hence we’re out practicing and refining our protocol. Thanks again for watching and stay tuned for part 2 of our MOB drills in a fortnights time.
