    These things are REALLY nice, much nicer than I expected, and they're going to be slowly replacing my old packs since I'm getting too busy to babysit failing Lipo's! I'm hopefully done with the frustration from puffy and crappy lipo packs - I'm done with that nonsense, and hope you'll try these things too. I'm confident you'll appreciate the added quality when you power up your first Charger.
    For once I'm not going to be Mr. Cheapskate!!! These things are AWESOME! Wish I would have done this a long time ago.

    Great review Brian and Megan! I'm gradually switching over to smart batteries. I have the S2100 and a few 3S, 4S and 6S smart batteries. I like that I don't have to worry as much about storage and keeping track all the different charge states. I really like the Spektrum Smart Checker too. It's great for programming the batteries and it helped me find a problem with a servo on a new plane. The elevator servo wouldn't work right and then quit completely, thankfully not in the air. It was before it's maiden flight. Stay safe and healthy!

    I have been buying the spectrum batteries since getting into this hobby about 4 months ago. I realized a lot of times, I do not get to fly all the packs I charged up and simply do not have time to discharge 3-4 batteries or more if I didn't get to fly at all. The auto discharge feature on the batteries are really helpful. It is 1 less thing to have to worry about. Spending an extra $4-$5 dollars more per battery for some piece of mind is worth it. Thank you for the review on this smart system. I have been debating switching my set-up to the smart system. I only have the Smart checker with my batteries at this moment.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. I've been flying for a little over 5 years now, and wish I had such a technology back then, as I believe I'll be using these packs in another 5 years...some of my first packs are totally GARBAGE now - oh well...shooting targets ;)

    Icharger duo 308 $270
    And icharger 50amp power supply $270
    Serious charging power and speeds.
    Spektrum smart batteries are nice for charging and not having to worry about discharging. But imo a bit over priced. Some youtubers have got me on roaring top. Affordable and good quality. I got a lot of turnigy batts too.
    Good stuff man. Your vids are always good. Thx

      YESSSS. I've got the 308 Duo as well. It's an amazing unit. Quite a powerful bit of electronic equipment. It can charge 2 10s Batts at once. I'm using 2 12v Hewlett Packard power supplies. Never had any gripes about it. And the fact that it has an SD card slot for battery memory is super convenient and versatile.

    This has to be the second (or third) time I've watched this video. But now that I'm in the market for a charger, and a 'smart' charger that can also charge dumb batteries, AND why do they make AC and DC variants, this all makes perfect sense now. Great video!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you GET my review even more now :)
      If you charge "At the field" 100% of the time, you might not want an AC option...but for me, I ALWAYS want it AC...unless the power's out, and I need to charge my cell phone, like when the power was out for three days last month!

      You can charge a Gen1 SMART battery on "Dumb" charger...just not a Gen2 with total safety...Technically, you can ALSO charge a Gen2 on a "dumb" charger, but it could lead to a dangerous condition if you charge too fast for the SMART chip to balance the cells.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thank you Brian. On my Arrows 3S 2200mah 11.1 volt 25C batteries, I usually balance charge at 1.5 rate. Have been doing the same with the Spektrum Gen 1 batteries. Same size only 30C. So far no problems.

    I bought the s1200 thinking I could use my Hytec X4 80 multi charger with it ( WRONG !!!!! ). so far the only one you can use is the expensive one by Spectrum.
    Man , they gotcha now, more money to dish out . BEWARE . There might be another power supply to use, I just haven't discovered one yet. OHHHH-POOP.
    Brian, you found that out in your demo on one of your older power supply's. RIGHT???? Ya got that figured out yet?. your a genius, come on Brian ,you can do it.
    love you vids, keep it up you and Megan, your a great team.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      George, why did you think you could use the Hytec X4 80 WITH this S1200? Can't you set one of the channels to work as a NICAD or something of the sort, then force it to run in 12VDC output to the S1200??? I don't understand your plan.
      Why not just get an AFTERMARKET power supply if you don't want to drop $110 (or whatever it costs) for the Spektrum one like I'm using? You just need a 12VDC output at whatever wattage you'd like to have.
      What about something like this - amzn.to/2DMHrgT OR This amzn.to/31U8wqq ???

    Brian are your batteries balanced after charging? I'm using the S1100 to charge smart packs but the voltages are always different per cell. I'm thinking the spektrum chargers don't balance charge but just regular charge the smart batteries. Thoughts?

    Hi Brian, on the S-1200/1500's can you run them off of a car battery with alligator clips? I have an old Eflight charger that charges through the balance plug and clips to a 12v source (car battery) but is limited to 2 & 3 cell because input voltage needed to be higher than output. Can the spektrum chargers charge a 5s or 6s battery from a 12v source (13.8ish if car is running)?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can if you have the right alligator clip to banana plugs. That's what a lot of guys like to do at the flying field, or they'll make an adapter and plug in a large 6S pack and charge a bunch of smaller pack off it ;) Works like a charm, but gotta keep from using the bigger packs - LOL ;)

    Hey Brian I’m hoping you can help me out. I bought a S1100 smart charger and I’m having difficulties with it being able to discharge my smart batteries. I put it into the discharge mode and it takes almost 8 hours to discharge a single battery. I tried adjusting the amp draw setting to see if that would help but it hasn’t changed anything. Any tips?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't use the charger at all...set the AUTO DISCHARGE and let them be. You don't need to discharge them from the charger!!! That's one of the best features of the SMART packs ;)

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      5000mAh = 5Amps if you want to charge at 1C, but you could charge a 50C pack probably about 2-3C and be totally safe. I KNOW you can use 5Amps, but if you want to do 10Amps (or whatever the max current is) you'll be good to go.
      When in doubt - charge at the size of pack... 2200mAh - 2200mAh X (1Ah/1000mAh) = 2.2Amps.
      I charged a 2200mAh 4S 30C Smart lipo at 11 Amps - it was sooooooo fast, but I was in a hurry, and set it back to 2.2 amps right after to prolong the life of the pack.

    Looking into transitioning to newer Smart tech stuff. First will be a new BNF plane and a new radio. Trying to decide in what order to transition over to smart batteries and charger, and this video helped explain some of how it all works. I will have to look into charging smart packs with a regular charger, but I'm guessing I will need the smart charger first and then batteries. That kinda sucks a bit because I have 2 good dual chargwrs already.
    May just do without the smart batteries for a little while, and then when it is time get a smart charger and a couple smart packs when I end up needing new batteries later. Running newer planes with smart tech, on regular batteries, will work fine for now right?

      You're supposed to "Discharge" lipos, so the chemistry is "stable"... SMART batteries automatically do this for you, and you can set the time frame. I'll show this in a later video, but that's probably the best feature of SMART Technology.
      As for standard Lipo's, you're supposed to leave them at 3.80 VDC per cell. I've never done this, and as a result, I get about 2-3 years out of my packs, and they end up puffy and working poorly. This is due to my crazy schedule, so I can't always wait around for charging time when I'm ready to fly.

    Hi Brian and camera crew, Firstly thanks for all your videos, they're great. I have a couple of questions about batteries. I have bought a FMS Let 13 1500mm glider, I wont be flying it anytime soon because its in the UK and I am in Turkey, with travel restrictions in place I think I will be seeing it hopefully mid summer. Before I do I would like to buy some extra batteries, it has a 20 amp ESC, and recommends a 2S 20C 1300mah battery. I notice from your videos that you switch the number of cells and capacities quite a lot and are totally confident about it within the same plane / glider. My question (s) are what battery specifications could I change without changing the motor or ESC. I have bought a genuine IMAX ACDC balanced charger also that I have not seen yet, what else do think I should either while or before I visit the UK? TIA

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! When in doubt, I go by what the MFG suggests. If you can't tell, you have to make your best guess.
      Two items to use as clues (I say clues, because even listening to these you might get burned)...
      1) ESC documentation will tell you what IT can support
      2) MOTOR will help you decode the rest...but this is a lot harder. Some will suggest 3S compatible, AND 4S compatible, while others will just claim a wattage...then you get to do math ;( SOOOOOO, I generally just go by what the BNF or PNF recommendation was, then I listen to our amazing audience.
      3) (I know I said "two items"...but I remembered one thing) You CAN get a current tester, and just hook up the power system with this in series, then you can CONFIRM both ESC and MOTOR draw the correct amount of Wattage...but again, still requires math ;(
      Good luck with your research, but also one other idea...what about RCGroups? You could do a search for the FMS LET 13 1500mm glider (P.S. I WANT ONE - LOL) and see what others are running. While this method is not 100% foolproof, it is sometimes helpful with build up and/or kit planes.

    Here is what I dont quite get. I know this platform from Spektrum you get the ideal charging from the smart charger/batteries. Aside from making charging simple, this is supposed to help keep them running in peak performance right? The best performance over the life of the battery, but does this also equate to longer run times with the smart battery compared to a "dumb" battery of the same rating, and mha, and all that? Secondly, if I buy an Arrma car and the new v5 models have all spectrum electronics servo/ESC/Motor/radio, what benefits would I get from using the smart batteries over any other regular battery?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really, the chargers aren't what make the SMART packs better...
      First it's the fact that the packs SELF balanced and auto-discharge. Secondly, the chemistry is way better. Thirdly, better silicone wiring helps, but doesn't make a huge difference in charge and discharge performance.
      All these things adds up to better use, but the auto-discharge helps to get longevity out of the packs. If you don't already discharge you "non-SMART" packs, you might get two or three seasons out of a lipo, then they pretty much die...in my experience, whereas, these packs are right where you need them, if you do nothing. For me, it's almost impossible to have all the packs at storage charge, since we have to be johnny on the spot when we're ready to film a flight...now the SMART packs are sitting at storage level when I need them. I hook them up and charge them super fast, if necessary, and ready to rock and roll.
      That all being said, chargers are nice, and work well...they aren't really the primary reason, but this was just a video introducing some of the newer chargers.

    Hey Brian, you probably know this already but at 14:12 that 1/8" mini plug port is not for a temperature probe it's to update the firmware. (Battery temp data would be read thru the IC3 connector.) I suspect Spektrum used this type of socket instead of a standard (or mini) USB port so that people would not confuse it for another charging port like the standard USB port immediately next to it. Horizon sells the cable but you can solder one up easy enough if you have a 1/8" TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) plug. Just cut off the end of a spare USB cable and solder up the 4 wires to TRRS plug. The tip would be V+ and the Sleeve would be V-. The 2 rings would be for data transmit and receive. Google "USB pin out" for a diagram.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you built the 3.5mm headphone (TRRS) to USB end? I know this makes sense, but some of the cables Horizon Hobby has used in the past, IE AR636 programming cables, have been ACTIVE...not passive ;\ Thus, can't just chap and swap if this is the case...
      I DO Agree with your assessment, but it's not rocket science to share that in a label, then customers can just see FIRMWARE / CHARGE marked on the side. I was disappointing that the upgrade cable wasn't included....what if they had a safety recall - that would be a pain...either way, LOVE the charges!!! They are great.
      Thanks Dan!

    • @danreynolds8028
      @danreynolds8028 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I agree they should include the cable with the charger. If Horizon is going to offer new technology to the market then they should include the means to update their products. Yet they might figure that the majority of users would not bother to update their firmware anyways. Many people might logically believe they have the latest firmware because they have just bought a brand new item but who knows how long that item has been sitting in a warehouse. Plus it's another way for Horizon to squeeze us for that that extra buck by charging $11 for a 29c cable. To answer your question - I have made TRRS cables before but not for this particular application as I am still waiting for my 2 Smart chargers to arrive. Your comment on passive/active cable is well founded but I seriously doubt it is an "active" cable. That would be easy enough to determine though. I assume you have a Vom meter or continuity tester? Maybe you could check the pinouts of your update cable. If all 4 leads show continuity and zero or near zero resistance then it is definitely a passive cable and can be easily made. Also, I mentioned earlier that it is a 1/8" TRRS plug. I should probably back pedal on that assumption. Since I've only seen the charger in your video and photos online, it is possible it could be a 3/32" TRRS plug which is smaller than the 1/8" version. Maybe you can confirm this for us with a quick caliper measurement? Also, a continuity test of your update cable if you wouldn't mind. That would answer the question for sure.

      Never have. You? I don't buy that there's enough of a safety factor improvement. I'd lean toward a brick structure before bags. I feel the bag might almost encourage dangerous situations, since you can't see what's going on while charging.

    I bought the s1200. I didnt know I needed to spend another $100 on a power supply. Cheap options for a power supply? If not Im returning it and getting the s1100

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. The Power Supply that I'm using is the BIGGER option, if that matters, but to be honest, I've been using and recommending the S2200 Gen2 of late. This was the first batch of SMART stuff, so we got another batch the next year and I've been really happy with the S2200 Gen2, to the extent that we almost always use it...or the S1200 Gen2 (Single Channel)
      If you can exchange it, I would do it too... the S2200 Gen2 is a bit more expensive, but then it's a DUAL channel and you can run it off the AC power. The only drawback, if I had to pick one, is if you charge off the grid...like at the flight field, then you might actually want to stick with your S1200, and make up some BIG ole power leads to put on your battery in the car and then charge your packs that way....but I do not.
      I'm sorry if I somehow confused you. I hate that there's an S1200 Gen1 and S1200 Gen2 - How confusing is that!??!?!

      @@BrianPhillipsRC you didnt confuse me I just didnt read enough about the charger. Ive got a two channel dumb charger that is great. I may just keep the 1200 for charging in the field that may work out good. I dont have a ton of smart batteries and my s150 died so I just wanted to replace it with another better smart charger. I like the auto storage feature on the smart batteries thats really the only reason I got them. And because you can charge some crazy fast.

    how do i figure what it the best rate to charge my batteries at? they are smart batteries but i see ppl charging at different rates than default.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The size of the pack. mAh are 1/1000 Amps....so whatever the size is, for example 2200mAh would be charged at 2.2Amps. If you want it to charge faster, you can do whatever you want up to the printed maximum, but it's harder on the chemistry, thus you will somewhat lower the lifespan of a lipo by charging, OR discharging too fast.
      These SMART packs are very good, so you can charge them at 3X that speed, if I recall...and some might even be okay with more!!!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      If it's a SMART pack, gen 1 or gen 2 you can do that...but if it's not a smart pack, you'll have to use the balance lead. Also, for Gen1 you have to acknowledge you're okay with charging WITHOUT balance lead, but on Gen2 it will just start when it's plugged in, provided you're running latest and greatest firmware.

I’ve taken out the batteries I’ll put it back in I’ll pull out the SD card when it was sitting there loading a let it sit for two hours And nothing that’s when I started doing everything else to it it’s really frustrating it’s a brand new transmitter don’t know what to do all it does is flash the orange light and show the spectrum down load screen
