  • GM Gregory Kaidanov (2554, USA) is a well-known Grandmaster, Coach and Author. Kaidanov put up a great fight against the World no.1 Magnus Carlsen in the 8th round of Qatar Masters, eventually got outplayed and lost his game. After his game ended, we had an in-depth interview with Kaidanov where he talks about the critical moments of his games against Magnus and Jorden Van Foreest. He also talks about the strong playing field, balancing coaching and playing, and much more.

@@summonersummoner9536 Indeed, Viktor Korchnoi was still in the FIDE top 100 at age 75

@@jurjenvanderhoek316 Sure but Korchnoi is known as the greatest player to have never become world champion. It's not like Kaidanov was world champion himself, he got down to an opposite-coloured bishop game the computer evaluates as equal as black against the world champion, just a pity he didn't get the half point.

I once listened to GM Kaidanov do internet commentary for a chess tournament. There was no chess engines evaluation bar to guide the commentary back in those days. He had a knack for breaking down difficult situations in a clear and understandable way. It was a great demonstration on how to reason your way through complex positions.

If all players would be as ethical and respectful as him there would be no cheating scandals

Gone through hundreds of combination puzzles but the best one or my favourite combination was the one he played. Unfortunately I can’t remember the position or who the opponent was. But only remember how amazing the combination was.
